Alternative, RnB | Joel Compass – Run (Video)

Posted by on October 18, 2013

This is the latest release from the newest Photo Finish artist Joel Compass – the video for his newest single, “Run”, was released a few days ago via Vevo. “Run” is the lead single from Joel’s forthcoming LP, tentatively scheduled for release during the first quarter of 2014. “Run” premiered on BBC Radio 1 during Zane Lowe’s show back in late September as his ‘Hottest Record.’

I’ve always had a soft spot for R&B music -I can thank John Legend for that- and perhaps it’s this predisposition which attracts me to Joel Compass so easily. But, even if R&B isn’t your go-to genre, this young artist has enough originality and crossover appeal to really leave a mark.

Enjoy the song and video and stay tuned for his LP coming soon!

Hip-Hop, Review | Drake – Nothing Was The Same (Review)

Drake told us on his Versace remix that his album would come out in September, “just wait on it”. We have and on Tuesday it will finally be released to the public. Now we all know that it is available to the public, why else would I be writing a review on this album right now then? To be perfectly honest, I have not been a huge Drake fan these past couple years. However, I think at this point we can pretty much call him the Lebron James of the Rap Game. An egregious comment? Maybe, but what we cannot deny is that love him or hate him. Drake has a talent unmatched by nearly everyone else. Drake has implanted his name in the rap game for the last handful of years, with his previous mixtapes and of course his last album, Take Care.

“Nothing Was The Same” is quite simply put, a masterpiece. Its’ blending of so many different sounds and samples, matched with the many different vocal ranges that Drake provides really displays the true talent he possesses. What I think makes NWTS so amazing, is a perfect mix of both Drake’s singing and his rapping. Everyone loves hating on Drake for this, however with the rest of the album, it’s pretty difficult to say that he doesn’t go hard. (Song that best describes this: Furthest Thing) Songs like “Worst Behavior”, “Poundcake”, which has a phenomenal verse from HOV, and “Too Much” all pack heat. I easily think that this is the best LP from a rapper this year. Yes, I’m aware that Kendrick, Kanye, and Jay-Z all had albums come out this year. I highly encourage a deep listen to this album. Although a quick skim will suffice to a listener’s ear, Drake’s true genius is shown throughout the flow of the whole album. Make sure to buy the album tomorrow when it releases.

House | Bewilderbeast – Severed

Bewilderbeast - SeveredStumbling upon great tracks is one of my favorite things to have happen when I’m on the hunt for new music. Up an coming producer, Bewilderbeast, really came through with something incredible in terms of this original. The progression is soothing and smooth to the senses, taking you through the many layers of a blissful state. The build up at the second half of the track is fantastic, dropping into a great piano melody backed by Bewilderbeast’s cool vocal sampling. This is the first single off of Bewilderbeast’s upcoming LP, “Unreal_Estate”, releasing on August 1st.

Electronic, Indie | Bend – I’m Taking Care of Him

So now that you’ve got the latest Daft Punk in your sweet possession, add this to your summer playlist in the making:

Meet Bend, an indie synth-pop duo outta Los Angeles who’s previous works prove their versatility on the indie electro front. Their newest single, “I’m Taking Care of Him,” feels a little like an electronic Vampire Weekend battling the AcaFellas over a beautiful grand Steinway piano. This song makes a perfect summer melody as I can just imagine myself listening to it on any occasion, be it on the beach, on a boat, or driving around with the windows down. Or floating in a sea of nebula, you know (see above).

This marks the first of 3 singles to be released until their full LP drops this June. So stay tuned!

Albums | Jared Evan x Statik Selektah – Boom Bap & Blues [Album]

Although the prominent age of Boom Bap is now overshadowed by electro beats and radio ready production, the subgenre is far from dead.  Statik Selektah is by no means a “Boom Bap” producer, but his versatility sheds light on the masked style.  Jared Evan sings from his soul.  He raps from his soul.  That’s his style.   Collectively, the duo have collaborated on their joint LP, Boom Bap & Blues.  Together they have resonated a combination of genre’s that mainstream music is missing.

There’s no question the features will catch your eye (Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, Lil Fame, Termanology…), but Jared’s versatility alone is worthy of repeated play.  Props to you Mr. Evan and Mr. Selektah, this is one hell of a project.

Hip-Hop | Kids These Days – TrapHouse Rock (Album)

Posted by on October 30, 2012

Being an avid promoter of all Chicago music, this brand new album from Kids These Days was a must post. Their sound is so different and unique from other bands and groups, and it works. TrapHouse Rock marks the Kids’ first LP, which even garnered some production from Wilco frontman, Jeff Tweedy. Since the Kids are so nice, they decided to embody their SAVEMONEY philosophy and release the album for free. Grab the album below and hit them up on Facebook and Twitter.

Hip-Hop, Videos | Kinetics & One Love — Still Dreamin’ (feat. Termanology) [Music Video]

Posted by on August 16, 2012

Here it is, ladies and gentlemen. This is the moment where Kinetics & One Love transition from renowned songwriters to renowned artists. The moment where they become known not for penning the hook to B.o.B’s 2010 mega-hit “Airplanes,” but for tracks of their own. Today we have the privilege of premiering “Still Dreamin’”, the first single and video off their new full-length, You Are Not Alone, which is dropping exclusively on iTunes on August 28 (and features the likes of Termanology, Nitty Scott, Wynter Gordon, and Accent). I promise this video is going to leave you mesmerized, and is true evidence of their achievements and the improvement this duo has made since their last LP, Fading Back to Normal, which they released in 2009 still as undergrads at Cornell. Termanology’s feature here is the latest in the trend of Kinetics rapping alongside underground vets (he traded verses with RA the Rugged Man, Remedy, and Unknown Prophets on his recent mixtape) and no longer the pop-rap upstarts of earlier days, whom he easily out-spit. Term’s presence here—both on the track and in the video—brings great power and shows off his versatility, as we more commonly hear him over Premo or Hi-Tek beats. Kinetics’ newly honed delivery and voice is hypnotic as he aggressively whirlwinds over One Love’s fierce and magnetic instrumental with lines like “I’m here to give the streets crack/Call it Ronald Reagan.” The video features cameos from Freeway, Statik Selektah, and Accent, and perfectly captures the energy and visual reaction I had the first time I heard the track. Even though this song will be sold on iTunes, K&1L have agreed to release a free download if the video reaches 100,000 views. So, enjoy the visual, share it with your friends, and let this hold you over until we’re graced with You Are Not Alone in full on August 28.
