Mixtapes, Rap | Big K.R.I.T. – 4Eva N A Day [Mixtape]
Posted by Grubeats on March 8, 2012
With eight mixtapes under his belt to date, Big K.R.I.T. dropped his 9th project, 4Eva N A Day, as a continuation of his highly regarded mixtape of 2011, Return of 4Eva. I know I rarely, if ever, have posted Big K.R.I.T. here on FNT, but I hear the chirping in the cbox to post him. It’s not that I don’t recognize his craft, but personally I’m not a huge fan of the majority of today’s southern hip-hop/rap. With that being said, K.R.I.T. is an exception and even a fair weather fan can appreciate this project as a whole. K.R.I.T. maintains a fair balance of hard southern sound while integrating relevant lyrics. On top of the rapping, the king self produced the entire mixtape, apart from the few live compositional contributions, which is impressive in itself. If you’re only going to listen to a couple tracks, make sure you run through “Boobie Miles”, “4EvaNaDay (Theme)”, “1986”, “Down & Out”, & “Handwriting”. [Download Mixtape Here]

Electro, Hip-Hop | OnCue – Feel Tall (The Soundmen Remix)
Posted by Grubeats on March 7, 2012
Let me start off by saying “Feel Tall” was one of my favorite songs of 2011. Cuey reached a whole new level when he released the song along with the stop motion video to correspond. With that being said, I was somewhat skeptic when I saw the track had been remixed. Any and all doubts quickly evaporated a mere 11 seconds into the song. The highly talented Seattle production duo, The Soundmen, turn the (already) crack track into a audio fiend’s thanksgiving feast. Keeping the important elements of the original song intact, they add enough original production and remix the hook to create a perfectly balanced mix.
Props to The Soundmen, I wish more producers would rework indie hip-hop like this!
Hip-Hop | Grynch – I’m Good ft. Sol
Posted by Grubeats on March 7, 2012
Two of Seattle’s finest join forces on Grynch’s brand new album, Perspective [iTunes], which hit digital stores on March 2nd. I haven’t had a chance to listen to the whole album, but I saw this track featuring Sol, which initially caught my attention. After releasing, what I consider to be the album of 2012 “Yours Truly“, Sol returns with his first feature since the album release. Boasting an underground sound, Sol and Grynch deliver some feel good bars over the Budo produced beat. Seattle’s hip-hop scene has certainly been around for a while, but some of the youthful faces are bringing well deserved recognition to the city.

Videos | Timeflies Tuesday: Until The Sunrise (Live)

Diverging from the usual bangin’ production we’ve heard the past several weeks on Timeflies Tuesday, Cal and Res slow it down and share an acoustic version of “Until The Sunrise”, which was originally featured on The Scotch Tape. This may act as a reminding fans that strings and a pure voice can still make musical magic, as it did in early installments of Timeflies Tuesday. 56k FB fans and counting, jump on the wagon now kids.
P.S. I saw the X Factor will be holding auditions for their second season in the coming spring months. Anyone else think we should encourage Timeflies to apply for an audition? Tweet this link at them @Timeflies !

Mashups | DOSVEC – Somebody I Used To Know in Paris

Since the start of the Gotye remix competition, I thought I was tired of hearing more, but I gave DOSVEC the benefit of the doubt. DOSVEC always surprises me, even though I should be use to it by now. His mind works in such a mysterious way that his mashups are always the perfect fit of instrumentals and vocals. I have sported my hate of Guetta on FNT many times, but I wont lie, I really enjoy ‘Paris’ with these vocals. As always, DOSVEC made sure to accompany this dope new mash with some sweet visuals.

Girl Fire, Preview | Felix Cartal – Black to White (Feat. Miss Palmer)
Posted by Spice on March 1, 2012
Don’t know what you’re working with on this first day of March but here in D.C. it’s 70 degrees out and far too sunny to be working. This day was made for the following things: 2.5 hour lunches (whoops), outdoor cocktails, driving with the windows down, and Felix Cartal’s latest banger, which features some great vocals from Miss Palmer (of “No Beef” fame) and an enormously infectious chord progression that I haven’t been able to get out of my head all day. Been a minute since we’ve posted straight up girl fire on FNT so be sure to give this one a listen. “Black to White” drops on iTunes on March 6th.
