Events | Five Things We Can’t Wait For At Electric Zoo 2013

Posted by on August 8, 2013

Summer is flying by, which is bittersweet on one hand but totally amazing on the other. Why? Because it means that we’re getting closer and closer to Electric Zoo’s blowout fifth year. If you’re not up on your EZoo life, check out our official recap video from last year and see what you missed. Yeah — it was pretty killer. Fortunately, this year is already shaping up to be bigger and better than ever for many reasons, not least of which are:

1) Two mainstages (count ’em, TWO) and an expanded festival site on Randall’s Island. More on that later.

2) A new 18 and up policy. Sorry, youths (#YOUTHS) of the world — I’m too old for your shenanigans and look forward to mingling with an older and wiser crowd. *Wheezes; testily gestures for you to GET OFF MY LAWN.*

3) A totally killer lineup — which is par for the course by EZoo’s standards. There’s lots to be excited about here, but we’ve come up with five things that we’re especially stoked for. Check ’em out after the jump.

Hip-Hop, Rap | ScHoolBoy Q – Collard Greens (ft. Kendrick Lamar) [Video]

Posted by on August 7, 2013

I say with ease that ScHoolBoy Q is one of my favorite “new school” rappers, that is, if he’s even considered new school. Already with a full-length album under his belt the Compton native is one of the most watched artists of 2013. His sophomore LP Oxymoron will feature “Collard Greens” and is already one of the most anticipated releases of the year.

Calling in TDE associate, Kendrick Lamar, to drop a verse and Gwen Bunn/THC for the instrumental, Q pulled out all the stops. “Collard Greens” is definitely a “check me out now, h8rz” kind-of song and K.Dot along with ScHoolBoy both make sure to strut their stuff.

The video is eventful to say the least, and even features a few cameos from Macklemore. Check it out, enjoy, and stay on high-alert for Oxymoron coming soon.

Albums | Dog Blood Leaks Middle Finger Pt. 2 EP In Advance of Release

Anyone dismayed by the news about Dog Blood’s upcoming EP getting delayed until August 20th should head immediately to the duo’s Soundcloud page, where Middle Finger Pt. 2 can now be streamed in full (well, almost in full; there’s a Trapmasters remix of the titular track that doesn’t appear to be up yet). Most of this should sound familiar — between festival sets and Skrillex’s recent BBC Radio 1 Essential Mix, it’s likely that you’ve heard “Middle Finger Pt. 2,” “Chella Ride” and “Shred Sled (Kill ‘Em With The Beat)” before. Also of note: a typically great M Machine remix of “Middle Finger Pt. 2” that gets positively savage. Check it out below, and support the great work that Skrillex and Boys Noize are doing by purchasing the EP when it drops officially on the 20th.

Chill, Pop | MARLENE – Bon Voyage

Posted by on July 30, 2013

Marlene BonVoyage

Sweden’s been producing great pop artists these recent years, and MARLENE is no different. I’m loving this song right now “Bon Voyage.” Safe to say, Summer of 2013 has been full of excellent, light, rhythmic tunes, and this track is no different. The impeccable production by Tepr & Myd will take you away, and the chorus gets it just right by wishing you: Bon voyage!  Unfortunately for those who want to add this track to their Summer playlist, the official single will be available in August but for now enjoy this avant-garde video directed by Sikow.  On a good note, if you’re a producer and you feel like a remix would do this track justice, the acapella and instrumental are available for download on her SoundCloud. This is hands down a must listen!

Albums, Hip-Hop | Connor Evans – The Road To Coachella [Free Album]

Posted by on July 25, 2013

If you haven’t realized, it’s 2013 and white rappers are in.  Connor Evans has that hybrid rapper/singer west coast sound.  Rooted in Redlands, Cali, he can’t help but have some of that ganja influence in his rhymes, but don’t mistake him for a “weed” rapper.  He raps with intellect, clarity, & confidence.  “The Road to Coachella” is, well, Connor’s first steps on his journey to the big stage; The Road to Coachella.  Not masked by any major features, this album is that sound hip-hop fans are fixed on.  15 tracks in, I can confidently say this young G may be seeing himself on the Coachella lineup sooner than he thinks.  Listen through, but if you have the patience of a pigeon, start off with “Hipsters & Primadonnas” and “Ridin’ on a Storm”.

Hip-Hop, Videos | Little Pain – High Cry (Official Music Video)

Posted by on July 18, 2013

I just read a pretty interesting write up on “Sad Rap” , and it seems like Little Pain is leading the revolution.  Little Pain comes to you from  Crown Heights, Brooklyn. At age of 21 Pain has only been rapping for about 4 or 5 months but has been “sad my whole life”. Pain is working on his “sadtape” entitled “When Thugz Cry” due out in 2013. One of the more interesting things to come out of hip hop, curious to see whats next for Little Pain.

House, Preview | Disclosure – F For You (Totally Enormous Extinct Dinosaurs Remix) [Preview]

Posted by on July 16, 2013

Disclosure-

Mark my words: 2013 will go down as the summer of Disclosure. Settle has already taken the blogosphere/world by storm, so it’s not terribly surprising that high profile remixes are beginning to pop up.

With “F For You,” the consummate niche-occupier/genre-defier better known as TEED takes an already great song and ramps it up about seven levels. Where Disclosure’s original is tight, polished, and crisp to a fault, TEED’s is spacey, a bit dark, and hypnotically stripped down. Damn. I might like this more than the original, and I like the original quite a bit. Keep your eyes peeled for a release date — not shocking/almost fitting that this went up without one.
