I’ll be honest, this mixtape hit me like a bag of bricks. I didn’t know it was coming and I certainly wasn’t expecting this thorough of a project. Now 10 mixtapes deep, Ground Up has faded on and off my radar but after hearing their last project, “The Get Down” and this one “The Get Up” it’s evident I need to pay more attention to the Philly duo. “Skill over Swag” is the motto Azar and Malakai have coined and ran with, meaning substance over conforming to sell records. I really think this tape is their best yet and all aspects of their delivery have greatly improved; from the ground up. With production from Teddy Roxpin, Jahlil Beats, & of course Bij Lincs as well as features from Freeway, Young Chris, among others, there’s a good variety of subgenre’s featured.

Moosh & Twist are back with another hot track since their successful release of “The Welcome Mat” mixtape back in August. Receiving great production from Darrell Robinson, the Philly duo rip the beat in typical OCD fashion. There is no confirmation whether or not this will be a single off their next project, but for the time being, it’s a dope promo hit.

Tayyib has been fairly quiet over the past couple months while his last mixtape, Keystone State Of Mind, is still finding its way to new sets of speakers. While we have no definitive answer for when Tay’s next project will be released or what it will be called, we do know this is the last work off KSOM and another mixtape is on its way in the near future. With KSOM nearly surpassing 40,000 downloads on Datpiff alone, Tayyib decided to put together visuals for one of the best songs off the project. “Yesterday”, produced by Vokab is more of a reflective song for the young price of Philly who has skated his way into the limelight among up and comers. The video itself was shot by Matthew Pitkoff who brought the camera’s back to the skate park to capture Tayyib sharing his adverse story. While Tayyib Ali had a busy summer on the road, Jon Kilmer was behind the camera capturing nearly every moment of it. From New York to Philly, to Massachusetts, to Boulder, Tayyib showed fans just what he’s all about. I was fortunate to catch up with Tay down in Plymouth, MA where he had the crowd moving like a veteran. Still only 19, this young Philly gun is poised for success and with new material just around the corner, expect more big things to come from Ali.
In other news, Statik Selektah released the track list for his upcoming album, where Tayyib will make an appearance along with Mac Miller, Bun B, Talib Kweli, Joel Ortiz, Big K.R.I.T., XV, and several other notable artists.
