Cover, Pop | PropaneLv – Stay With You (Avicii & Mike Posner Cover)

Posted by on September 25, 2012

Portland’s PropaneLv dives into the electro pop world with the latest installment in his ongoing series of covers/remixes. Assisted by an instrumental rework from Chi Duly, Lv puts his own spin on the upcoming Avicii x Mike Posner single with desirable results. This cover is a welcome departure from his more frequent Hip Hop & RnB covers, which recently hit 1 million views on his YouTube channel.

Events, FYI | Grand Opening: Echostage D.C.

Posted by on September 19, 2012

To live in D.C. is to get some of the very best electronic music acts brought to your front door.

Yes, I realize that some of you may be raising your eyebrows right now (looking at you, New York), but trust me. We’re quietly killing it down here, and it’s all thanks to a little outfit called Panorama Productions, the brains and brawn behind promotion company Club Glow, which has been connecting the nation’s capital with the genre’s biggest names since 1999. This Saturday, things are going to get even more serious: Club Glow will preside over the launch of D.C.’s first EDM venue, Echostage, a roughly 4000-capacity space with an equally massive sound system that will host huge billings every week. For district area dance fans, this is literally monumental. Club Glow has been operating primarily out of Josephine and Fur Nightclub for the past few years, and the recent explosion of dance music has made the need for a bigger and better venue that much more urgent.

The Echostage launch party kicks off this Saturday with Sander Van Doorn and Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano, and the calendar shows no signs of slowing down; Dada Life, Armin van Buuren, Avicii, Dirty South, and Tiesto are already lined up, and we’re still in the very early days. If you live in the Midatlantic and are starved of that 128 bpm fix, head over to Echostage’s website and Facebook page and scope the details — because this is about to be big.

Electro, Interviews, Videos | Music Talks Presents: Avicii – A Global Sensation

Posted by on September 19, 2012

Independent interview series “Music Talks” is back with their second interview linking up with one of the worlds hottest DJs.  After debuting the Music Talks series with an exclusive Mac Miller interview, the crew was able to land a chair next to Mr. Bergling and discuss everything from his personal favorite song, to blondes & brunettes, to the apparent new game of “flip cup”.  It’s not often we see interviews with Avicii, especially ones that touch on his personal side.  The kid may not know how to play flip cup just yet, but it’s fair to say he’s got a decent understanding of this music thing.

Progressive House | Avicii – Silhouettes (Avicii’s Ralph Lauren Denim & Supply Remix)

Posted by on September 6, 2012

On the heals of releasing the official remix package for his hit single “Silhouettes” with possibly another package to come, has released his free remix of the track in honor of his endorsement deal with Ralph Lauren. The remix takes a more stripped down, minimal approach to the track, giving it a much more subdued sound that does not go for his big room sound, but more of an easy going vibe.

This remix does raise the question of how influential this endorsement deal Avicii has with Ralph Lauren. This is old news, we all knew he was inked to them a long time ago, though this is strongest play they have made at his music yet. He recently had a free show in San Francisco in their honor and presumably they footed some or most of the bill for it. However to put a company in the title of a track is quite different from just endorsing a product by wearing their cloths at gigs and promoting them via social media etc. Imagine Tiesto making a “Tiesto Guess Remix”, that would be outrageous. I would not go as far to say he has sold out, that is extreme, many artists have very close corporate sponsorships that help them to expand their fan base and create new opportunities for them. The problem comes when the independence of the artist is infringed upon and their ability to create music as they want comes into jeopardy. Unlikely this is happening here, but just something to watch out for.

Progressive House | Avicii – Last Dance

Posted by on August 27, 2012

Avicii, what is up with all of these releases all of a sudden? What is next, “Abow”? “Nothing Without You”? I certainly am not complaining though. Do not doubt the label that this has been released on. One More Tune has released tracks from Afrojack, Swanky Tunes, Axel & Lanford, Doctor P, Alesso & more. They just have been dormant for a while, leading me to believe this was signed a long time ago and Avicii is just releasing the songs he signed a while ago so he can start to release his very new ones such as his Summerburst ID. While Avicii’s live shows have lacked creativity and inspiration, there is no doubt that his productions have set a new standard for progressive house tracks. This whistle dominated tune starts off with the old school sound of Avicii and then transitions into the prominent whistle top line that may be a little too loud and dominates a bit much, but gives a happy feeling to the track with a steady bass line, cheerful piano and pitched synths. With this current string of releases from Avicii, I would say we should expect more from him soon, but you just never know.

Progressive House | Eric Turner vs. Avicii – Dancing In My Head (Avicii’s Been Cursed Mix)

Posted by on August 12, 2012

Capitol Records threw us a curve ball here by not only releasing what I and many believe to be the better and more polished version of this track before the more radio friendly Tom Hangs edit, they also released it a few days before their original announced release date. The track brings together Avicii’s masterfully crafted melodies and playful arps and lets them shine with Eric Turner’s vocals accentuating the builds of subtly complex and powerful bass lines and deft key work. With an apparent “Epic” announcement coming this week rumored to be a NYC gig, Avicii is showing that he is still one of the biggest assets in house music today.

Avicii why? You have such a gem of a track here and you ruin the full potential of the track by adding vocals to the break. However, it is great to see that this is finally on the path to getting a release. While the gorgeous melody crafted by Avicii still remains prominent, I cannot help but feel that the break would be better if Avicii’s artistry stood alone and was not competing with Eric Turner’s vocals. That being said, this is going to be a massive hit, there is no arguing that. Hopefully this will come with a dub version or the version he plays out, “Avicii’s Been Cursed Mix” when it is released soon on Capitol Records to satisfy all his fans and make a more club friendly track.
