Pop | Chris Rene – Trouble

Posted by on June 28, 2012

Following his breakout single, that had millions around the world asking “Young homie, what you trippin’ on?”, Chris Rene releases the second single off his debut studio album.  Despite the success the Santa Monica native saw with “Young Homie” after he inked a deal with L.A. Reid and Epic Records, a subdivision of Sony Music, the pressure was still on for the second single.  Naturally, we all questioned whether Rene was more than a garbage-picking-smooth-rhyme-kicking-SoCal phenomenon.  Chris just squashed any signs of doubt with his newest release, “Trouble”, appropriately suited for the season.

Upon first listen, I thought producer Busbee may have pulled a sample from Israel Kamakawiwo’ole’s “Over The Rainbow” while it sounds like strums from a ukulele carrying on throughout the song.  Holding true to his dynamic “pop intertwined with the occasional hip-hop verse or beat kick” sound, this song is sure to take off this summer.  What do you think, did Chris make it over the one-hit-wonder speed bump?

Hip-Hop, Pop | Upper West – Common Ground

Posted by on June 19, 2012

Upper West is back with their first solo(well, technically duo) release since their sucessful mixtape release, West Side Stories. This song shows off the typical Upper West style; you always know what you’re going to get when you listen to them. Their sound is always poppy, like something you would hear on the radio(but not bad). But as opposed to mainstream garbage which usually consists of constant pleading to call me(maybe), the boys of Upper West have harder hitting lyrics, often delivered by Doug, that actually serve a purpose, and try to relay a message. This song was released as a “thank you” to the fans that have helped Jessie and Dougie reach 10,000 fans, so thank yourselves for making this song happen.

Freestyle, Pop, Videos | Timesflies Tuesday: Summer Girls

Posted by on June 13, 2012

[do action=”youtube” videoid=”agsFMqu9IGY”/]

Nobody else can spin an old track like Timeflies can.  Week after week they’ve been digging through their itunes vault sampling and remixing some of my favorite childhood/teenage tracks.  This week they bring it way back and cover Lyte Funky Ones’ (LFO) one hit wonder, “Summer Girls”.  The sad truth is that some of you didn’t even know how to read when this fruity pop/rap record ascended up the Billboard charts back in ’99.  Juvenile rhymes and catchy hooks landed LFO with one of the catchiest tracks of the decade.  I will say I loved it back in the day, but Cal’s added free verse makes this much more bearable as a recycled classic.

P.S. How ’bout that concert footage of Timeflies rocking that enormous crowd?  Impressive.

Pop | Usher ft. Swedish House Mafia- Euphoria

Posted by on June 5, 2012

Continuing to cash-in on the dance craze that’s sweeping the hip-hop world, Usher teams up with Coachella headliners Swedish House Mafia to create a stand-out single that will have Parisian-prince, David Guetta, likely pouting in a corner over SHM making the album and his tracks only making the bonus cuts.

Pop | MARTEL – Ricochet

Posted by on June 5, 2012

Let me introduce you to MARTEL, a new project from LA-based songwriter/producer Marty James and producer Matt Price. Late last night they released “Ricochet”, their debut single, which combines some funky old-school production straight from the eighties matched with soulful vocals. In my opinion, this is what Pop music should sound like. You can also hear MARTEL featured on the new Laidback Luke Heineken/Euro 2012 anthem “We Are the Stars” set to be released June 7th, which can be previewed here. Girl Fire, Pop, Videos | Akon Performing “America’s Most Wanted” Live

Posted by on June 4, 2012

I am so jacked up right now. I don’t think you really understand. When I was in college, Akon had an unbelievable run. He was on everyone’s single. He is forever a legend in my book. Last night, he debuted his “America’s Most Wanted” single while Miss Rhode Island absolutely crushed the stage. Talk about dream girl. She’s smart too. When she dropped “cognitive processes” on stage, she had it won. Expect this single to put Konvict Music’s el jefe back on top!
