Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | Ground Up – The Get Up [Mixtape]

Posted by on March 9, 2012

I’ll be honest, this mixtape hit me like a bag of bricks.  I didn’t know it was coming and I certainly wasn’t expecting this thorough of a project.  Now 10 mixtapes deep, Ground Up has faded on and off my radar but after hearing their last project, “The Get Down” and this one “The Get Up” it’s evident I need to pay more attention to the Philly duo.  “Skill over Swag” is the motto Azar and Malakai have coined and ran with, meaning substance over conforming to sell records.  I really think this tape is their best yet and all aspects of their delivery have greatly improved; from the ground up.  With production from Teddy Roxpin, Jahlil Beats, & of course Bij Lincs as well as features from Freeway, Young Chris, among others, there’s a good variety of subgenre’s featured.

Mixtapes, Rap | Big K.R.I.T. – 4Eva N A Day [Mixtape]

Posted by on March 8, 2012

With eight mixtapes under his belt to date, Big K.R.I.T. dropped his 9th project, 4Eva N A Day, as a continuation of his highly regarded mixtape of 2011, Return of 4Eva. I know I rarely, if ever, have posted Big K.R.I.T. here on FNT, but I hear the chirping in the cbox to post him.  It’s not that I don’t recognize his craft, but personally I’m not a huge fan of the majority of today’s southern hip-hop/rap. With that being said, K.R.I.T. is an exception and even a fair weather fan can appreciate this project as a whole.  K.R.I.T. maintains a fair balance of hard southern sound while integrating relevant lyrics.  On top of the rapping, the king self produced the entire mixtape, apart from the few live compositional contributions, which is impressive in itself.  If you’re only going to listen to a couple tracks, make sure you run through “Boobie Miles”, “4EvaNaDay (Theme)”, “1986”, “Down & Out”, & “Handwriting”.  [Download Mixtape Here]

Watch the video for “Boobie Miles” and stream the entire mixtape after the break!

Mixtapes | D. Tucker- Somewhat Good Is Okay Vol. 2 (FNT Exclusive)

Posted by on March 1, 2012

FreshNewTracks.com is proud to exclusively bring you D.Tucker’s sophomore project, “Somewhat Good Is Okay Vol.2”. This 23-year-old alternative hip-hop sensation, founder of the YachtLife (Young. Ambitious. Creative. High-standard. Talented. Lifestyle.) set sail in the Bahamas and made his way to Miami where he currently resides. Earlier this week, I asked D.Tucker about his first project, what his goals where, and what philosophy his music was guided by. He replied:

When I recorded my first mixtape I was at the end stage of switching my career from a professional photographer into a full time alternative rap / hip-hop artist. I was excited to be utterly focus on, SGIOV2, painting my stories of love and ambitions for YachtLife. As an artist I want to continue to push my creativity to make better work and ultimately make me the best me that I could be. My new fans will eventually learn that I take my craft serious and I work my ass off to better myself for a number of reasons other than kicking it on the beach with in my Sperrys, with Stellas and models. I want to inspire people, make them feel good and let them know that they can do anything that they want to when they put their mind to it with some good work ethics. To say it again in simple terms, I want the people to know that life become a non-stop vacation when you make your passion your profession.

Indeed, this budding artist is doing just that- relentlessly chasing his dreams with an unwavering vision. If D. Tucker continues to drop projects a strong as this mixtape, I predict he’ll be on a Yacht somewhere off the coast of San Tropez in no time. I’ve included my favorite tracks below as well as a download link to the entire project. Hit “read on” for the tracklist.

In honor of his father who died 6 months ago today, DOSVEC delivers us his newest masterpiece of a mixtape. Going strictly with electro/dance styled mashups at 128 bpm, DOSVEC out did himself on this mixtape. The set itself  is great for any occasion, whether it’s a party or a dance floor. I love the wide array of vocals packed into these mashes, showcasing many different decades of catchy tracks. After giving this mixtape a full listen, I wish it wouldn’t be an embarrassment for me to bust out in this library. Hip-Hop, Mixtapes, Rap | Saigon – Warning Shots 3 [Mixtape]

Posted by on January 29, 2012

After once vowing to retire after he dropped his first (and only) album,

“Whatever the case may be, We do a census on who is the sickest lyricist, they say me, That’s without a album out, y’all rated me, I drop one and I’mma bow out gracefully” – Saigon

…the Yardfather returns with the third installment of his Warning Shots mixtape, One Foot In The Grave.  Hungrier and more determined than ever, Saigitty follows up last years album (one of my personal favorites of the year), The Greatest Story Never Told [Purchase Here], with a cut-throat project once again proving to fans and critics that he’s one of the hardest lyricists out. The tape definitely holds true to his “underground” image, banging heavy with executive production from the one and only, Just Blaze.  The Brooklyn native has already confirmed another album is on the way, and judging by the work Sai’s been putting in lately, I’d say it’s coming very soon.  Below are a few of my favorite cuts:

Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | Dylan Owen – Keep Your Friends Close (EP)

Posted by on January 22, 2012

This is honestly one of the best pieces of music that I have ever heard. Dylan Owen gives us this brand spankin new 11 song EP. Each song is a phenomenal story with beats to compliment Dylan’s flow. The emotion of the lyrics is what makes this EP so special, each song is just jam-packed with them, and that’s why Dylan is so good, oh and well he raps really good too, because it’s about real life problems and that’s what makes it easy to relate to. With a quality release like this, the sky is the limit for Dylan. So do yourself a favor and make sure you download this.
