Hip-Hop, Rap | The (W)rap Up Vol. 1
Posted by admin on February 18, 2015
Jimi Tents – Elmer Fudd
There is an interesting collective emerging in Brookyln, NY. While the rest of New York City wallows in their sorrows of a lost Bobby Shmurda and still-very-present Troy Ave, Jimi Tents and his collective are plotting their takeover. Jay-Bel seized the blog world a few weeks back with “Kate”, and now Jimi follows up with an equally impressive “Elmer Fudd”. I’m a sucker for introspective rap, so when Tents opened up the song with “if a body drops in the and no one around , does it make noise?” I was instantly hooked.
His rapping seems meditative. It carries healing powers. I’m excited for what comes next, this is clearly just the beginning.
Smino – Red Velvet
After forgoing a recent name change, Smino re-emerged with a special Valentines Day track for all his lady-fans and emotional males. His voice is as silky smooth as ever while Monte Booker’s production continues to get stronger and stronger. Smino floats back and forth between falsetto R&B, and melodic rapping making “Red Velvet” an exciting listen from front to back.
Electro, Hip-Hop, Rap | Mulherin – Royalty (ft. Jon Waltz)
Posted by admin on February 12, 2015
Jon Waltz is an interesting character. His music floats back and forth between amazingly self-aware, and uncontrollably catchy. In this particular tune with producer duo Mulherin we find Waltz gliding in an out of pockets in the production. He’s is not overpowered by the entrancing instrumental, rather the intrinsic rhymes are a perfect complement.
While Jon still works to find his exact niche in the overarching and massively expanding genre of “rap”, it is nice to hear a rapper who can add value to the increasingly complex production of this day and age.
Hip-Hop, Rap | IshDARR – Vibe
Posted by admin on February 4, 2015
IshDARR is a proponent of the strange, but incredibly captivating group of artists from Milwaukee that have been making noise for the past year or so.
Ish is only 18, but carries wisdom far beyond his years. His music is forward thinking, yet contains a certain charm of earlier hip-hop. His France-based producer, Jean Kengz, is partially to thank for this sound; the two mesh well and create a song that is as interesting sonically as it is content-wise.
Old Soul, Young Spirit is the name of Ish’s forthcoming album, set to drop later in the spring. Stay tuned for much more in the bright future of this young talent.
Electronic, Hip-Hop, Rap | Hiko Momoji – Late Nights (ft. Father & Abra)
Posted by admin on February 3, 2015
The New York based producer, Hiko Momoji, is fairly new to music world with only two songs in existence. For his most recent release he enlisted Awful Records own, Father, and Abra. The duo team up to make a sing-songy lullaby, suited for the Valentines season right around the corner.
The contrast of Abra and Father’s voices bring the song to life and make for an intruiging story start to finish.
Bass, Drum & Bass, Electro, Electronic, Trap | Daytrip x Vybz Kartel – Up To The Crime (Video)
Posted by admin on January 27, 2015
When you hear a song for the first time, it’s easy to jump to conclusions about the songs meaning, or perhaps what the artist was envisioning while he or she composed it.
In music videos, like Act Natural’s for “Up To The Crime”, it’s captivating to see an entirely new spin on a previous piece of work. The video takes a viewer on a tour of London’s illegal gun trade. There are no actors used and all of the real people from where the video was shot in West London add a scary reality to the already dark story.
As the video twists and turns from alley to club, the melodic, yet powerful builds structured by traveling production duo, Daytrip, keeps your ears just as your eyes.

Hip-Hop, Rap | Marc Goone is The Scrumple King
Posted by admin on January 24, 2015
Marc Goone is an anomaly. To say his Twitter presence is strange would be an understatement. To say his music is packed with surprises simply wouldn’t do it justice.
On his newest album The Scrumple King Goone mixed the perfect amount of unabashed humor, with a level of self-awareness that is rare in any artist. His writing is stunning with deeply-rooted metaphors and rhyme-schemes that a normal rapper would be scared to even attempt.
With his brand down-pat and now clearly the music just as stunning, 2015 should be a big year for the St. Louis native.
Hip-Hop, Rap | Chris Smith Jr. Hits a Home Run with “Griffey”
Posted by admin on January 16, 2015
Chris Smith Jr. has returned to warm up this cold winter with the Monte Booker produced record “Griffey”. Smith displays a continued knack for poppy and catchy tunes while hinting at some of the hardship he faced while growing up in Ferguson, Missouri.
With the stream of music that Smith Jr. has put out as of late, don’t be surprised if you start seeing his name pop up more.
