Hip-Hop | SplYt – Catch 22 (Mixtape)
Posted by J_Salzer on May 23, 2012
I had never heard the name SplYt(split) before until a few weeks ago when his manager dropped something in the chatbox, I had time, so I gave it a listen and wasn’t impressed. Sure, the kid has some flow, and the beat was decent, but I had no idea it could lead to a project like this. Every beat is carefully chosen, and each one if murdered in its own respect. Keep in mind that SplYt is new to the game, this is his freshman tape, and he shows loads of potential. Of course, there are some things that he could do better, but it would be a crime not to post this. This kid is going places. I’ve had enough with the over saturation in the rap game, and I can’t stand MCs that don’t do anything unique, but this kid just has straight talent.
Hip-Hop | Sol – Be Good or Be Careful
Posted by J_Salzer on May 22, 2012
“And music never dies, it just evolves, grows into something bigger than us, bigger than life, a gift from the gods.”
Sol dropped this new track off yesterday, and although I’m a day late posting because of finals, it’s something you all need to hear. We’re used to a more laid back, chill style of rapping from the Seattle native, but he changes pace on this, taking on a simple, repetitive beat, and destroying it with smooth, SOLful, well thought out verses. Sol is going on an Earlesque(#OFWGKTA) epic international journey, check it out here. Hopefully Sol comes back better than ever, and after hearing his last release, I have no doubts he will.
Hip-Hop, Videos | Mayo – Time to Go (Video)
Posted by J_Salzer on May 20, 2012
Mayo drops off his newest track/video, which will be featured on his upcoming mixtape “Dream Big.” The song features much deeper and meaningful lyrics from Mayo. The beat he chose is perfect for the tone of the song, and lets him deliver his verses smoothly and soulfully. Mayo had this to say about the track,
“[t]his track is one of my personal favorites off my mixtape; not because of the heavy lyrical content of the song, but more of what I had to say in the track. I feel like it is one of my realest tracks I have made and hope everyone can really vibe out and enjoy this track it is somewhat of a different release from me, but I find different to be better in some cases. I can’t wait to release my mixtape this summer I have been putting a lot of work into but for now enjoy this new track and visual!”

Hip-Hop | Childish Gambino – We Ain’t Them
Posted by J_Salzer on May 17, 2012
After embarking on a twitter rant for the record books, Donald Glover graced us with the link to a new track in between defending himself from internet nobodies. It frustrates me seeing how this guy is treated(and tweeted). People need to accept Childish Gambino for what he is. He’s a comedian, who can make a damn good beat, and kills it every time. His talents are un matched in the music game right now, and also has the ability to produce, act, all the while getting laughs, and hate. This hate has made him who he is, if he didn’t get hated on, he would probably run out of material, being that most of his songs are reflective of his past. Without further adieu, I’ll let you dissect Gambino’s newest track, We Ain’t Them. And haters, try this, stop having a preconcieved notion in your head of what a rapper is SUPPOSED to be, and just try and enjoy the damn music.
Chill, Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | Beau Young Prince – Dream Catcher (Mini-Mixtape)
Posted by J_Salzer on May 14, 2012
After a brief hiatus from the making of good music, actually, let’s call it a hibernation. Beau Young Prince has returned with a vengeance. Recognizing that he’s been off his game, Beau took the necessary steps to get back on track with this mini-mixtape. Although the tape is only six songs deep, it features Beau showing off some serious versatility. He tackles some faster paced beats, keeping up with the higher tempo with ease. And flows over the chill, slower beats without missing a beat. Admittedly, one track, Wild Things Are, I have no idea what the hell is going on with, but it’s a pretty cool beat.
I found it interesting that Beau named the tape Dream Catcher, because after his lack of quality music in the past few months, it shows me that he’s back, and dedicated to the dream that so many artists are vying for. You. All artists are out to gain fans, because they know that they’re the ultimate key to their success, and Beau knows that he’s been off his game, but he’s back. Last night, I asked Beau why he chose a bed for the cover, and he said because that’s where dreams occurred, and he really liked the image his guy brought him.
Hip-Hop | Kid Rey – Can’t Stop
Posted by J_Salzer on May 12, 2012
I got a submission a few days ago from a person by the name of Kid Rey, I replied to him in the usual fashion. Telling him that I’d listen and get back to him. I quickly forgot about it and didn’t give it a second thought. Rey then hit me up on twitter, and hit up the chat box. Fellow writer Mach told me that I should give it a listen, so I took his word for it. I’m incredibly impressed with this song, the beat(Pretty Lights sample), the hook and both verses delivered by Kid Rey all show flashes of greatness. Especially because this is one of the first songs he’s ever released. Just goes to show you that persistence can take you places, and Rey wanting to be featured on FNT so bad made this song that much better.
