Hip-Hop, House | Na Palm – Electronic Chronic [Podcast #1]
Posted by Grubeats on June 27, 2012
[do action=”youtube” videoid=”4M8X2Fm4N-8″/]
We’ve heard the previews, seen the videos, and felt the buzz for Electronic Chronic for nearly a year now. Chicago hip-hop head/house music connoisseur introduced us to the first of its kind, hip-hop/electro/house podcast series. Rather than releasing the conventional album or mixtape, Nay decided to align himself with some of the Windy City’s hottest DJ’s to bring us a series of mixes featuring both his vocals along with the host DJ’s choice of productions. Here we have the first of the series, which is 1 hour and 13 minutes of lyrically-infused house music hosted by DJ Martinson on the first half and Bad Boy Bill on the second half.
Since this is virtually the first of it’s kind, I’m interested to hear what the FNT faithful have to say about this project and it’s format. To go along with that, make sure you’re tweeting @freshnewtracks @napalmlive & @djBadBoyBill #ElectronicChronic to keep this project live!

Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | YONAS – The Transition [Mixtape]
Posted by Grubeats on June 25, 2012
The moment YONAS’ music first graced my ears, I knew I had come across a special individual. That was a couple months before the Bronx, NY native had released his debut independent album, The Proven Theory. At the time, I didn’t know much about YONAS outside what I had extracted from the few singles I had heard. I went on his website and ordered myself a copy of his album. When I received it in the mail a week later, packed & shipped from his managers apartment, I realized just how independent and driven this kid was. Since then, The Proven Theory has not left the 10-disc visor folder in my car. It’s my go to.
Several singles, remixes, and videos later, Y-O welcomes us to The Transition. A comprehensive 15-track project featuring a contagious blend of hip-hop infused with electronic beats, hard hitting bass, and conceptual rhymes. There’s no question YONAS is a bully in the booth, but he articulates his rhymes as well as any artist in the game. He has flourished largely because of his versatile style and confidence to make the music he wants to make. Featuring 7 previously released tracks, along with 8 brand new ones, this project has something for everyone. Young Sinatra aka Logic, makes a guest spot on the tape along with one of YONAS’ idols, Brother Ali, as well as Scotty James. Production credits due to Sean Divine (YONAS’s right hand man who has been credited with the majority of his original production to date), along with DJ Corbett, & Sean Ross among others. For any new listener, keep an open mind and embrace the art YONAS has created. This is a must download. #TheTransition.

With only four days remaining until Na Palm’s Electronic Chronic podcast debut, the EDM slaying hip-hop head goes hard over one of Bad Boy Bill’s choice tracks and will be featured on the second half of the first podcast. Adding his verses over Roger Sanchez and Sidney Samson’s “Flashing Lights” original mix, Nay continues to push an infusion between hip-hop and EDM. With anticipation for a June 26th podcast premier, Na Palm has been grinding out long studio sessions with some of Chicago’s most recognized producers in hopes of opening some eyes and ears with the release of Electronic Chronic. As the video emphasizes Na Palm’s prolonged passion for EDM, he has begun morphing his sound from a heavy hip-hop foundation to a more EDM infused hip-hop sound. Below are the previous releases Nay has let loose, working off production from some of the industry heavyweights, Skrillex and Nicky Romero.
Hip-Hop, Videos | The Dean’s List – Birth [Music Video]
Posted by Grubeats on June 18, 2012
[do action=”youtube” videoid=”PBenpy_0cHM”/]
The Dean’s List stay on course, delivering another new video off their debut album, Generation X. The second track on the album, or “the calm before the storm” rather, orchestrates the beginning stage of our generation’s journey, with a powerful opening verse from Sonny which read’s as follows,
“And im the reason all my friends have something to believe in
I know its superficial but my mood fits the season
Im colder than I ever was and better than the better man
As simple as that sounds you should really let it settle in
The calm, right before the storm and but I know its cliché
But take a shot for, take a shot for being born”
With that, celebrate the small things we often overlook in life. Sonny Shotz is the king of introspection. He speaks truthfully in every song and very few artists can really represent a generation like The Dean’s List have begun to do. My only hope is that before the next project, we have a video for every track off #GenerationX because that would be one hell of a movie. As always, shout out to FTS Creative for another fine job behind the camera. This video will have your head spinning; literally.

Freestyle, Pop, Videos | Timesflies Tuesday: Summer Girls
Posted by Grubeats on June 13, 2012
[do action=”youtube” videoid=”agsFMqu9IGY”/]
Nobody else can spin an old track like Timeflies can. Week after week they’ve been digging through their itunes vault sampling and remixing some of my favorite childhood/teenage tracks. This week they bring it way back and cover Lyte Funky Ones’ (LFO) one hit wonder, “Summer Girls”. The sad truth is that some of you didn’t even know how to read when this fruity pop/rap record ascended up the Billboard charts back in ’99. Juvenile rhymes and catchy hooks landed LFO with one of the catchiest tracks of the decade. I will say I loved it back in the day, but Cal’s added free verse makes this much more bearable as a recycled classic.
P.S. How ’bout that concert footage of Timeflies rocking that enormous crowd? Impressive.
Hip-Hop | Voli – Sound Of Love ft. J. Cole
Posted by Grubeats on June 13, 2012
Dreamville, Dreamville, Dreamvilleeeeeee. Two of Dreamville’s finest, Voli and J. Cole come together to create the sound of love. The single will be yet another off Voli’s album dropping later this summer, The Wall, which is incrementally becoming one of my most anticipated projects of the year. Production credits can be split between the two multi talented musicians, as the flip Huskey Rescue’s original, “Sound of Love”. Earmuffs kids, this one’s for the grown ladies.
