Hip-Hop | nuLOVE – Hearts Up
Posted by Grubeats on December 14, 2012
When I heard “Iowa” and “hip-hop” in the same sentence, I wasn’t initially enthused. After opening my ears to the young Iowan group, nuLOVE, my opinions have changed. Poised with a determination to be heard, the duo’s MC, Boycott, boasts a calm, cool, and collected confidence, firing off two verses and easily brushing off the competition. The other half of nuLOVE, Jharee, strings together a trippy, raspy beat, perfectly suited for Boycott’s vocals.
Hip-Hop, Videos | King Mez – Monte Carlo [Music Video]

King Mez stormed my system with the release of My Everlasting Zeal back in the spring. Since, he has expedited his way atop my all star list of up-and-comers, listening to the mixtape over and over and enjoying it more and more each time through. “Monte Carlo” is a clear favorite off the project, laced with designer rhymes and delivered with an addictive drum kick from producer Commissioner Gordon and raw scratches from DJ Flash. This North Carolina emcee is nothing short of extraordinary and if you haven’t yet grabbed the free DL of My Everlasting Zeal, I suggest doing so now.

Chuck Da Ruckus stays up on his grind with the third release off his debut mixtape which remains untitled at this time. Behind production from Sean Ross, the Brown University linebacker attempts to balance his collegiate commitments with his “extra curricular” activities while ensuring a consistent delivery across the board. Enjoy these Julian Marshall visuals and stay tuned for CDR’s spring debut.

Alternative, Electronic, Indie | Passion Pit – Carried Away (Viceroy Remix)
Posted by Grubeats on December 7, 2012
Viceroy makes the winter months that much easier for those of us living in the frigid North. Injecting his Summertime, All The Time atitude in Passion’s Pit’s popular hit, “Carried Away”, off their recent album, Gossamer, the Cali party starter keeps the foundation but adds his uptempo electric punch. Don’t forget to wish Viceroy a happy birthday tomorrow on his social liks below!
Hip-Hop, Videos | Wax – Toothbrush [Music Video]

Coming off a humorous summer single, “Rosana”, Big Wax recently returned to the screen with another comedic single revolving around his Mrs. Butterworth’s ball and chain. The DMV native raps about the overwhelming discovery of his girl’s toothbrush in his bathroom, flossing out his competition in the process. It’s obvious Wax feels the relationship is moving faster than he anticipated, which provides a plot for his newest sing along. Wax’s third-coming project, Coming… is due to drop January 15.

For the newest installment of the Music Talks interview series, the team connects with Macklemore & Ryan Gosling Lewis during their sold out stop in Boston, MA. Touching on everything from releasing “Same Love” to their appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show to their career goals, the Seattle 1-2 punch give us great responses and even question each other at times. In addition, Mack shares his greatest thrift store purchase while Ryan voices his despairing regret on a small, flashy item he once passed up on. For a full review of their stop in Boston, head over to my concert review. For more from the Music Talks series, check out their past interviews with Mac Miller, Avicii, & Schoolboy Q.

Hip-Hop, Videos | ASAP Rocky – F**kin’ Problems ft. 2Chainz, Drake, & Kendrick Lamar [Music Video]

No artist or group will ever top Blink 182’s “Family Reunion” when we talk about vulgar songs. A$AP Rocky brought along his R-rated clique for his blazing single, “F**kin’ Problems,” which in short, is not a track you want to have a sing along with Grandma in your passenger seat. Now I’ll admit this is (and has been for weeks) my favorite song to crank in my car. 40 knocks the hell out of the beat and when you have an all pro cast assisting you, it’s hard to fail. Knowing that 3 of the industry’s hottest features all landed on the same track, I can’t help but critique young Rocky.
Among others, “Peso” and “Goldie” awarded him the opportunity to have such a respectable cast on this single, but did he abuse his leverage? Sure this record is the filet mignon of features, but was it necessary? I’m still left questioning whether A$AP can make a mainstream hit on his own account. One feature, sure, but 2Chainz, Drizzy, and K.Dot? In my eyes, he was out shined on the track. As much as I enjoy singing along to this with my middle finger flying, I wish A$AP made HIS own.
