Dear Niykee,

Please consider this my formal blogposal. I’m not sure what planet you came from or what your parents did to birth such an Alpha angel, but you’re here now. Don’t pay mind to the fact you weren’t even born and I was already crushing pogs with my gold plated slammer while eating lunchables like a king. Or to the fact that I didn’t get my first cell phone ’til I was your age (today). Yeah, it was that long ago. Or to the fact that your clothing style is now retro to me because I grew up in the 80’s and 90’s and WE invented swag. Or to the fact I was alive for Tupac’s reign. Bottom line is, I’m open to the idea of twerking. I have a cell phone now, an iPhone 4s in fact. I’ve also got a walkman, a cassette player, a VCR, a floppy disk, and one of the first mp3 players if you ever want a history lesson. We can make it work., I promise.

Albums, Hip-Hop | Connor Evans – The Road To Coachella [Free Album]

If you haven’t realized, it’s 2013 and white rappers are in. Connor Evans has that hybrid rapper/singer west coast sound. Rooted in Redlands, Cali, he can’t help but have some of that ganja influence in his rhymes, but don’t mistake him for a “weed” rapper. He raps with intellect, clarity, & confidence. “The Road to Coachella” is, well, Connor’s first steps on his journey to the big stage; The Road to Coachella. Not masked by any major features, this album is that sound hip-hop fans are fixed on. 15 tracks in, I can confidently say this young G may be seeing himself on the Coachella lineup sooner than he thinks. Listen through, but if you have the patience of a pigeon, start off with “Hipsters & Primadonnas” and “Ridin’ on a Storm”.

Pop, Videos | A Look Inside A ‘Beautiful Mind’

Listen, I don’t blog often anymore and I’m not going to waste your time making the same robot posts you can find on HotNewHipHop or whatever other blog teet you prefer to suck on. I do however, feel obligated to share nuggets such as this video when I come across them. For those of you who aren’t familiar with Jon Bellion, he is an up and coming indie/pop/drop/hop/whatever genre you can classify him in – stud signed to Visionary Music Group who hails from Long Island, NY. His style is unparalleled. His creative process is on another planet. He does it all. The video above is a snippet of a possible track in consideration for his sophomore album. One of the wildest productions I’ve heard in some time. In the words of DJ Rhetorik, “an urban anthem”. Handclaps and Rhetorik shouts all day. Djonbellion Unchained.

Electro, House, Pop | Timeflies – I Choose U (Fedde Le Grand Remix)

Add another one to the books. Timeflies newest radio ready hit single, “I Choose U” evidently trickled into the lab of Fedde le Grand, who remixed the electro-pop track into a heavier house hit. Adding powerful drum work and swooning synths behind Cal’s vocals and extending the already addictive drop just brought this track from six to midnight. The purity of Cal’s vocals really hold up nicely as the Dutch Commander maintains a uniform balance of added production and authenticity of the original record. While royalty is rarely served on a silver platter, NY native, Kurt Rockmore has his sights set on a gold plated crown. Early in 2013, Kurt released his debut project, Red Carpet Ignorance, which illustrates his opening with red carpet treatment. The project is sealed off with an outro track entitled “To Be King”. Above are the corresponding visuals featuring grammy nominated singer/songwriter Golden Chyl, as they collectively question what it takes to be king. Be on the lookout for Kurt touring the nation with Mike Stud.

Hip-Hop, Videos | Dillon Cooper – State of Elevation [Music Video]

Brooklyn boy, Dillon Cooper, recently shared his second video single off his highly anticipated debut project, Cozmik. Similar to his first release, Survival of the Fittest, Coop flexes on a 90’s sounding beat by Muvafux. Dillon elevates from his previous releases with ingenious wordplay, a smooth hook and an non stop energy in front of the camera. Release date for the mixtape is still unknown, but I’m confident Dillon won’t release this until he reaches a state of perfection.
