Penn Badgley (né Dan Humphrey, aka Lonely Boy) has apparently just done something really Penn Badgley-ish; namely, joining/forming a band called Mother that is based out of Brooklyn. I was admittedly planning to roll my eyes at this most hipstery of hipster resume additions, but unfortunately (or fortunately, as it were) this nascent group actually has some stuff. Fidgety bassline, interesting drums, languid vocals, and cool, atmospheric production — what? This track is officially awesome. Consider me intrigued. (Just don’t tell Serena — you know how she loves to pretend she’s “with the band.”)

Yes this tune has been remixed to death ever since it came out, but I implore you give this remix from Peter Brennan & TCUP a chance. Instead of just going with the standard version of the original and remixing that, they use a cover from Jasmine Thompson, which suits what they do with the song much better than the vocals from Passenger. The two producers gradually ease you into the remix with a soft bed of pianos and synth chords that nestle underneath Jasmine Thompson’s vocals before an onslaught of fast paced plucks come at you in the drop. We remember when we first received an e-mail from Collin McLoughlin. It was 2010, and he contacted us with a single submission. We were instantly impressed. In fact, we can still remember where we were when we heard his voice. We knew then that Collin McLoughlin was destined for greatness. While the Collin’s road to success has taken him to places like NBC’s “The Voice”, he’s on a new mission. Since July of 2013, Collin has been releasing a slew of impressive remixes and originals that have gained support from just about everyone in the blogosphere. Collin’s profile is quickly rising, so we decided to check in with him to talk about how a Youtube cover singer from New York became one of the most talked about names in the melodic bass world.
1. Forgive me for asking, but how did a guy that was knocked out in the second round of NBC’s “The Voice” become a successful melodic dubstep producer and DJ, essentially out of nowhere?
It took an incredible amount of dedication and hard work. I’ve learned everything I know about production from various online tutorials, Youtube, and trial and error. I also have had some good friends like Carlos Cid who have given me tremendous advice. That said, the majority of my DJ and production knowledge has come from an insane amount of hard hours spent teaching myself.

It might be a bit of a stretch to say we are seeing a second British invasion, but a new wave of British pop / soul singers is hitting the worldwide music scene with a vengeance, led by Sam Smith and John Newman and everyone is noticing. John Newman was first discovered by Rudimental and has burst onto the scene, notably with his single “Love Me Again”, which has seen countless remixes. In steps talented singer / producer Shaun Frank who creates a totally new and upbeat instrumental of his own designed for the clubs and covers the vocals in the same style as John Newman, but with Shaun’s own flavor.
