“We Found Love” was first recreated by Timeflies for their Under The Influence mixtape. While on the road in Salt Lake City, the boys hit the studio for a few hours to cover their own cover. I would say I was skeptic of the idea of covering ones cover, but knowing Timeflies resume, that would be a blatant lie. Always creative, always reinventing, this shines a whole new light on the song. ‘Phat beat maker’, Rez cooks up a stringy beat without the hard hitting sounds we heard on the original, as Cal once again flexes his pipes and annunciates the lyrics. Don’t let this think you can cover your own cover, because frankly, you probably can’t.

Far too often an artists “freestyles” are not actually freestyles. While this art was founded off the skill of improvising over any given beat, far too often pre-written verses create a deceptive impression of the select artists’ capabilities. Typically, you can tell if an artist is rattling off a pre-written verse, or if they’re spitting completely off the dome, but sometimes artists will mix pre-written bars with threads of free’s. Cal, of Timeflies, is one young artist who actually “freestyles” when he claims to be. The latest episode of The Clocumentary features Cal’s rare abilities to ad-lib whatever topics are being fed to him. We all know, nothing gets a party or a live show going like a live freestyle. Cal, props to you my friend.

Fittingly enough, Rez picked up a new Taylor guitar, just in time for their Tuesday release. With her two new singles, Taylor Swift is just about as hot as one can get right now, so why not cover her lead single, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together”. With Rez on the strings, Cal sings away reminding us how pure his vocals are. Don’t worry T-Swift, Timeflies got you.

Nobody else can spin an old track like Timeflies can. Week after week they’ve been digging through their itunes vault sampling and remixing some of my favorite childhood/teenage tracks. This week they bring it way back and cover Lyte Funky Ones’ (LFO) one hit wonder, “Summer Girls”. The sad truth is that some of you didn’t even know how to read when this fruity pop/rap record ascended up the Billboard charts back in ’99. Juvenile rhymes and catchy hooks landed LFO with one of the catchiest tracks of the decade. I will say I loved it back in the day, but Cal’s added free verse makes this much more bearable as a recycled classic.
P.S. How ’bout that concert footage of Timeflies rocking that enormous crowd? Impressive.
