Hip-Hop, Rap, Videos | Salomon Faye & Enasni Leber – Fool’s Gold

Posted by on April 1, 2013

When I received a musical submission from my necklace making brother, Charlie Hudson, I was a bit skeptical. The guy does make some nice necklaces, but what does he know about music? Well, apparently he knows a lot. A week after receiving his initial email, I’ve finally gotten around to listening to it. From the first 5 seconds, I knew I’d love it. I’m addicted to old school samples, and that’s what originally drew me in. But what made me hit the replay button four (4!) times were the verses from Salomon Faye and Ensani Leber. I had never heard of THEillUZiON movement up until last week, but it’s something I will be quickly educating myself on. Check out Salomon on twitter here, and Ensani here.

Contests, Events, Featured | We Are Recess

Posted by on March 29, 2013

Remember back when recess was the pinnacle of your childhood school day? Somewhere throughout the years, this fun and carefree attitude has seemed to fall by the wayside with students becoming consumed with school work and the endless search for a secure career upon graduation. Recess has bee reinvented to bring the playground mentality back to life by instilling an entrepreneurial inspiration and excitement back into campus through a music festival featuring your favorite dj’s and musicians. The event will take place at Michigan State University as well as Georgetown University.

Guest Post from Evora:

This week I moved away from the melodic/electro dubstep because being in mid-finals grind (my school is on the quarter system), my mind craves melodies that are consistent in vocals, beat, and style. I love huge drops when I’m hitting the gym or out on a run, but when I study I need music that provides the “white noise” needed to block out all distractions. Whether it is a paper, quiz, or midterm, use this playlist to power through those long weeks ahead!

Cover, Hip-Hop, Videos | Frank Ocean – Eyes Like Sky (Rendition) by SoMo

Posted by on March 10, 2013

Every Sunday night, I am hit with the blues. My weekend is coming to a close, normal life resumes tomorrow, and I must continue the mundane task that is school. But alas, I have a saving grace. Every Sunday in recent memory, SoMo has released a new rendition. SoMo Sunday has become a staple of my weekend, and I’ve even found myself looking forward to Sunday night…a little bit. This week, SoMo takes on a Frank Ocean track, which is an extremely daunting task. Frank Ocean is an incredibly talented singer, but also an incredibly talented story teller. He sings with emotion and passion, much like SoMo. I logged on to Twitter a few minutes ago, and saw that SoMo had posted the video 23 seconds ago, after clicking on it, I noticed that the YouTube comments were already filled with women swooning over this week’s SoMo Sunday. I am not afraid to admit that I’ve lost more than one woman to the voice of Mr. SoMo. Maybe next week he will take on a Mr. Steal Yo Girl song?

Hip-Hop | Maxxx Flair — New York City Raised Me

It’s no surprise that the majority of present-day emcees have begun veering towards the strategy of “quantity” as a means of getting noticed. They release new projects at an expeditious rate, more concerned with their name remaining in the headlines then they are with producing work of the highest quality. Rarely do I find an artist who is able to effectively bridge this as well as Yonkers-based emcee Maxxx Flair. Though he creates at a brisk pace, the sound is never compromised. Cue his new project, Wake Up, due this spring, and a new single that he’s sent our way, entitled “New York City Raised Me.” Back with frequent collaborator Snake-Eyes, a Brooklyn-based producer and engineer, we can expect the same level of prowess and lyrical ability on this new tape as we’ve become accustomed to from Maxxx, as is well evidenced by this old-school-style record. Check it out and get ready for Wake Up.

Ahead of the March 5th release of his debut album “Speed Of Life”, Dirty South drops off this heavenly collab with Deniz Koyu “Halo”. It has all the hallmarks of a track from the late 2000s with an updated twist. “Halo” combines an old school groove with emotive strings, a quick alternating bass line and anthemic synth chords that bring this track to the festival stage and make it a must have for WMC. With these two incredibly innovative producers on one track, you would have to expect greatness and they delivered with this angelic track that keeps your attention from start to finish.
