Hip-Hop | J.Cole – Let Nas Down (Remix ft. Nas)

“It’s just part of the game, becoming a rap king, my N*%*a you aint let Nas down”

Just like Kanye did in “Big Brother” with No I.D. being his mentor, young Jermaine decided to serenade his own mentor is Nas. Being a good mentor and all, Nas decided to hop on the track and spit a couple verses to his prodigy. The beat is perfect for the track, bringing a very 90s sound that made it seem like one Nas would have used. Born Sinner is hands down my favorite project that came out the 18th so if you have yet to grab it, I highly suggest doing so! Cole World.

For most of you out there, summer break is already in full effect. Some of you, perhaps, have already hit the “what am I doing with myself” phase, and some of you are still basking in the “this is going to be the best summer, yet” mindset. Whatever the case may be, 60 Sounds of Summer is here for you.

I know I had you hooked at the words “summer” and “playlist”, but as icing on the cake, blogstar and milk enthusiast, Elliot Baumohl has come aboard in collaboration with myself to create this pièce de résistance. Elliot and I will now be known as “We Like Peach Rings“, a collective whose sole goal is to bring you the absolute best playlists on the web. 60 Sounds is our debut, so let us know what you think and perhaps we’ll toss some more together!

Ok, well, I could bore you with a ton of unoriginal buzzwords about summertime music, or you could just listen to this lovely playlist!

Hip-Hop | J. Cole — Crooked Smile (feat. TLC)

Posted by on June 3, 2013

J.Cole-Crooked-SmileThis is the one I’ve been eagerly anticipating, and boy was that with good reason. After dropping a b-side, “Niggaz Know”, over the weekend, Cole lets go of the second single, featuring none other than the two remaining members of TLC. In a message about the song Cole said that he’s kept his features on Born Sinner extremely limited, just getting singers (there are no rap features) to do what he loves them for—which is exactly what you get with TLC’s presence on this track. I said it before, and I’ll say it again, Cole just might out-do Kanye with this one. Not in regards to sales, obviously—but as far as content, this is sounding way more like Kanye’s College Dropout than anything I’ve heard since. Cole has that honesty and ability to articulate everyman struggles in a way that not too many rappers have mastered since young ‘Ye. It remains to be seen, but do yourself a favor and get this track while you wait.

Hip-Hop, Videos | Lucki Eck$ – Everything Out$ide

Posted by on June 3, 2013

“I could never get stained, I’m like your special outfit”

Lucki Eck$ is an emerging Chicago rapper that has a very interesting sound that blends an east coast and Chicago sound together. A very slow tempoed, clams casino-esque beat that allows Lucki to spit some very good wordplay over. A lot of promise from Lucki and the rest of the emerging rap scene in Chicago, so be on the lookout for more to come.

Lv’s latest upload is missing his typical format: powerful vocals on the hook and raspy bars – this one is pure bars all the way through and he puts the icing on the cake with a long acapella to finish it off. Sometimes a dude just has to rap.

Featured, Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | Chance The Rapper – ACID RAP (Official Mixtape)

Its finally here. One of 2013’s most highly anticipated mixtapes has finally come out and it certainly does not disappoint. The transition from Chance’s first mixtape, 10Day, to ACID RAP not only shows his maturation as an artist but also how he has taken the internet by storm. Coming out of Chicago at the same time as Chief Keef may have seemed like a setback for Chance, however he has used that to the best of his ability showing the versatile rap scene that Chicago has to offer. I remember it like yesterday when my friends started to put me on to Chance, and I can’t thank them enough. Something about Chance and his music is just so easy to connect to and I couldn’t get enough of it. It was crazy to think that 10Day was his first intro to the rap scene. I craved that soul sound that I found on his Prom Night, Hey Ma, and Juke Juke tracks but when I listened to the rest of 10Day, I also connected to his slow sounding raps with You Got Me Fucked Up, Nostalgia, and Brain Cells. Chance’s best attribute is his versatility, but with Acid Rap we can see he’s starting to create his signature sound. When Smoke Again came out the other day, I was like “HOLY S*%T this beat bangs” then all of the sudden the beat dropped and he began singing over the beat instead of a hard hitting verse. I think that really embodies Chance. While I might want some more hard hitting verses, this is Chance’s project and its exactly what he wants.

I was lucky enough to be around Chance a lot this last summer and get to know him a little better. I think it’s funny when people say that most of these guys are just like us, I usually don’t believe it, but with Chance it held true. He’s just a normal Chicago kid that loves to make music and knows that that is what he wants to do for his life. I went to KCMO for his show with Childish Gambino and got to experience Chance as a person rather than as a rapper that I loved and really got to know that he is a laid back, genuine, and very funny person. While I clearly have a lot of love for Chance and his music, I know that he deserves all the attention he gets. The sky is the limit for Mr. Bennett and I’m really excited to see where he goes. #SAVEMONEY

After a brief hiatus, I’m back and ready to give you some tunes guaranteed to make you feel giddy inside. Instead of my regular hip-hop posts, I’m broadening my horizons with this volume including some electronic artists and other various genres. Prepare yourselves.

1) Cherub

Luckily I was able to see Cherub last weekend and they blew me away. Their synthy pop sound gives off an state of ecstasy that is guaranteed to get you grooving and bopping your head. Cherub hails from Nashville and has actually been around for a little bit, but has failed to receive the praise they deserve. Their Doses and Mimosas video (which is my favorite track by them), has over 600,000 views on youtube and I definitely see them blowing up very soon. Check out the video below and check out their Facebook, Twitter, and Soundcloud pages below.
