Penn Badgley ( Dan Humphrey, aka Lonely Boy) has apparently just done something really Penn Badgley-ish; namely, joining/forming a band called Mother that is based out of Brooklyn. I was admittedly planning to roll my eyes at this most hipstery of hipster resume additions, but unfortunately (or fortunately, as it were) this nascent group actually has some stuff. Fidgety bassline, interesting drums, languid vocals, and cool, atmospheric production — what? This track is officially awesome. Consider me intrigued. (Just don’t tell Serena — you know how she loves to pretend she’s “with the band.”)

The vibes of the day come from the great Sango with his chilled out remix of Janelle Monáe’s “What Is Love” off the Rio 2 soundtrack. I’ve had this track on repeat since I heard it, and the beauty of this record is that it sounds organic, from the vocals to the rhythm and harmony of the production, this is some good music! If you’re in New York City this coming Saturday night and are looking to experience these vibes, Sango will be in town, along with Kaytranada and STWO mixing at 88 Palace for Dark Disco. You can find out more of the event here. This is a must listen!

Hip-Hop, Rap | 21 – The Pink Bride

Posted by on March 9, 2014

With only five songs to his name on SoundCloud, to say that Memphis emcee, 21, has already made a statement with his music would be selling him short. Each of his songs pulses with raw talent that is becoming a necessary prerequisite to stand apart from the overly-saturated independent rap world.

In his latest offering, “The Pink Bride”, 21 fearlessly dives in to a Ta-Ku production that artists with far more notoriety would have shied away from. Illustrating the trials and tribulations of a past relationship, “The Pink Bride” serves as an emotional roller-coaster for 21 himself, as well as the listeners that are so easily swallowed up by the story.

Hopefully, we will be seeing 21 again soon, possibly with some original production to reassure the potential that many -including myself- see in him.

Freestyle, Hip-Hop, Rap | Vonny del Fresco – Studies

Posted by on February 19, 2014

Vonny del Fresco is fresh off the release of his After the Fall EP and decided to keep his fans on their toes with a short burst of music. “Studies” is a minute long freestyle/video that oozes energy and takes you on an robotic-sounding ride. The song was originally produced by Mr. Carmack, a name that is becoming increasingly popular in hip-hop production, and del Fresco decided to give the new-school production wave a spin with some sharp rhymes penetrating the already complex instrumental.

Electro, Hip-Hop, Rap | Galimatias & Joppe – One Step Back (ft. GoldLink)

After proving he could conquer a “typical” hip-hop beat, spitting atop Kendrick Lamar’s “The Heart Pt. 2”, GoldLink is back in his production wheelhouse with the dreamy-deephouse sounds of Galimatias and Joppe. The two Danish producers have been making music together for some time now, and luckily they connected with the Virginia native through the future production label, Soulection.

The song has already amassed an astounding twenty thousand plays in the first 24-hours, and shows no signs of slowing down! Although, “One Step Back” will not be a part of GoldLink’s upcoming project, The God Complex, it’s a very strong addition to his musical catalogue. Enjoy the free download and be on the look out for an official release date of The God Complex sometime next week.

Chill, Electronic | LOFT – EP1

Posted by on February 13, 2014

“EP1” by Loft was one of those EP’s that actually grabbed my full attention away from what I was doing. Harrison Zafrin, of Bombs and Bottles, is releasing these tracks under the alias of Loft. The Bombs and Bottles sound can be heard in the tracks, but they’re also very different. These three tracks are mellow, emotional, and moving. The vocals are all beautiful, and the production is top notch. This EP gets a huge thumbs up from me, and if you’re feelin’ it all three of these tracks are free to download through Soundcloud.

House | WhiteNoize & Nima G – Haters Get Mad

A wise Fat Jewish man once said, “I keep an umbrella with me at all times to shield me from the tears of my haters.” Keeping a hater umbrella handy is something San Francisco based Dj/production duo, WhiteNoize, should probably consider doing because these fellas go to work and where there is someone working hard , there is usually a hater lurking, ready to cry their big salty tears all over the place. This Tech-House tune with deep dance-floor tenancies  goes out to the haters for staying on their job. Haters would be better off popping a molly and giving someone a hug, then they are wasting their bodie’s hydration on hate-tears but then who would fuel the tanks of the achievers in the world? Either way, haters are going to have to figure out a way to stay hydrated cause bottled water isn’t getting any cheaper and you know they stay broke.
