Hip-Hop, Rap | Vic Mensa – Time Is Money (ft. Rockie Fresh & Beldina)

Posted by on August 1, 2013

vic mensa - time is money

Since Chicago rock/rap band, Kids These Days, disbanded a few months back, rapper Vic Mensa has been busy working and building up as a solo rap act. After the take off of childhood friend, Chance the Rapper’s, music it seems only right that Vic is the next to blow from Chicago.

“Time Is Money” is the newest blessing off of INNANETAPE, Vic’s forthcoming mixtape. The song features a verse from fellow Chi-town rapper, Rockie Fresh, as well as some killer production credits from Boi 1da & The Maven Boys. With two other singles already out, the project is shaping up to be a big one from the young emcee. Although one chapter of his music career has closed, a brand new chapter was opened and it seems that plenty of old and new fans have quickly flocked to his relatable lyricism and infectious sound.

Catch all of Mensa’s other music on his Soundcloud and come back -hopefully- soon for INNANETAPE. Savemoney.

Featured, Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | Logic – Young Sinatra: Welcome to Forever [Mixtape]

Logic_Welcome_To_Forever-front-large

It’s been one hell of a year for Visionary Music Group/Def Jam crooner, Logic.  When you’re junior mixtape exceeds 500,000 downloads in a short years time, it’s not easy to maintain the same charisma, confidence, and quality and delivery it cohesively in a full bodied 20 track mixtape.  Logic is that minority statistic, disproving critics that were convinced a major deal would lead to “sell out records”.  Young Sinatra: Welcome to Forever epitomizes the intersection of fluent lyricism and major mainstream production.  Yes, he signed to Def Jam, but it should be noted that his core is still VMG.  Logic has not changed. The team has not changed.  The music has not digressed.  The bank account….may have gained a few fruitful commas.

“Everybody talk about logic, no sell out
Bitch I had a deal for you before it fell out” – Logic (Tim Westwood Freestyle)

I’d give you a track by track analysis of this project, but quite honestly if I committed to that, I would be sitting here for more hours than I have.  Ultimately, I’m a fan just like you.  We share the same passion when listening to the music.  From here I can only hope those who haven’t opened their ears to Logic do just that.  Listen.  I won’t tell you to play this record or play that record because it’s all personal preference.  The substance and depth is consistent track to track.  Yes, there are some notable features, but to be quite honest, Logic outshines them all.  Enjoy the music, you’re witnesses the come up of a legendary figure.

Hip-Hop | e-dubble – Big Ships

I’m not really trying to hear people’s talking heads anymore than at all throughout the day, and so I tend to sway from hissing vocals on just about everything I listen to. That said, there’s an occasional wordsmith like E-dubble that neatly embroiders lyricism into a beat like an instrument, and that sounds right.

Hip-Hop | Hi-Rez — Never Enough (feat. Kinetics) [Music Video]

I’ve been aware of Hi-Rez’s growing stardom for awhile now, but it wasn’t until I really delved into his work that I realized how deserving he is. Rez is a talented rapper in his own right, who cares about the kind of hip-hop he represents, and thus works diligently on his lyricism. Joining him on this gripping, melodic Cherne beat is Kinetics, an absolute lyrical warrior, who is becoming one of the blog-world’s most consistent songwriters and emcees. Neither disappoints here, and Kinetics’ enthralling hook is what gives it its true lasting appeal. Be sure to stay updated on these two as their popularity continues to grow — we can only imagine that they are destined for long careers given their talent.

I’ll keep this short and sweet. Staticky beats, and good lyricism is what’s happening here.

Hip-Hop, Rap, Videos | Julian Stephen – Booty Call Hrs (Video)

Posted by on March 5, 2013

It’s not often that I’m approached via facebook message with music from artists I’ve never heard of. I take that back, that happens multiple times a day. What’s rare is me actually listening to that music, and what’s even RARER, almost unheard of, is me ENJOYING the song. But this, this my dear friends, is an anomaly. After Shawn Setaro of Rap Genius introduced me to Derrick, Julian’s manager, I had to listen. Shawn gave his endorsement, and that man’s word is bond. This time it was no different, after first hearing the track, I replayed it three times. After first watching the video, I watched it twice. Julian Stephen embodies New York rap. His beats, his flow, his lyricism. Check out the video above, and get yourself a booty call tonight.

Hip-Hop | Skiff – Van Wilder

In the mix of what has been labeled “Frat Rap” and has received criticism for lack of lyricism, a new artist emerges with a new sound, complimented by witty lyrics and a smooth flow. Enter; Skiff. The San Francisco native drops his 1st single out of his home at Wyclef Jean’s new label, “All Handz On Deck”. With his Hip Hop single “Van Wilder”, Skiff pretty much tells the story of the average college student, without the sugarcoating and simple lyricism.
