Next Friday marks the beginning of one of the best, still most underrated music festivals in the business: Austin City Limits. Held outdoors in the state capital’s glorious Zilker Park, ACL marks the end of festival season, offering a lineup that pulls artists both big and small from every corner of the planet. On that note, ACL also does a great job at showcasing the underdogs who traditionally end up scoring top slots in big-name festivals the following year. Now a contender in the two-week festival category, you can expect to hear more great music than you’ll know what to do with over the course of the festival, not to mention you’ll be overwhelmed with tough decisions of overlapping artists. Well, lucky for you we picked out a few of the artists you reaaally shouldn’t miss if you end up making the pilgrimage down south. And for those stuck at home watching the live stream, you can use this to your advantage, too. See which artists made the first cut after the break.

Hip-Hop, RnB | Pharrell – Happy (Kaytranada Edition)

Posted by on May 12, 2014

Kaytranada Happy

Kaytranada has taken huge steps in the music industry as of recently so it’s not that surprising that he’s taking another step into that of Pharrell Williams. For Pharrell already being his own powerhouse, Kay did a excellent job of fitting his shoes. This Eiditon of “Happy” is very Kaytranada but still holds all the essences of the original song.

Freshly premiered on the Fader, the first lady of HW&W Recordings Reva Devito teamed up with her labelmate KAYTRANADA to release “Friday Night,” a soulful 21st century R&B throwback with a bass that will have you making a stinky face. If you’re not familiar with Kay, now would be a good time to get acquainted with his sound, as he’s bound to be HUGE, bringing a refreshing sound to the music game, all while not tripping on the hype nor what everyone else is doing. If you have a chance to see him live, make sure you do, a great time is assured! This is a must listen!

DO SOMETHING

Electro | Logic feat. Jhene Aiko – Break It Down (Louis Futon Remix)

Posted by on April 16, 2014

Philly duo Louis Futon may be still be arguably “new” to the scene, but their discography and social media following proves these boys mean business. They’ve got heaps of original releases in addition to a handful of remixes, each one varying a little bit in genre from the next. This delightful remix of Logic and Jhene Aiko’s “Break It Down” is, as the say, perfect for those summertime vibes. I hate to spoil this track by pointing out its similarities to Kaytranada’s style, so just think of it as Louis Futon’s own spin on that groovy feel.

On that note, you may have heard Louis Futon on Ta-Ku’s latest “Drive Slow, Homie, Part III,” in which case you should make note that track will be featured on their upcoming EP, still TBA. In the mean time, snatch this free download and toss it on your poolside playlist stat.

Chill, Electro, Hip-Hop | AlunaGeorge – Kaleidoscope Love (Kaytranada Edition)

Posted by on March 5, 2014

Everyone knows that Kay’s been killin’ it recently on the board and on tour. But this version of Kaleidoscope Love takes it to the next level for this Canadian producer.

Electronic | Mr. Carmack – sunday into monday funk

Posted by on January 20, 2014

It’s mid-morning already over here in snowy Sweden and I have not been able to bring myself to even think of stepping foot outside by bed until catching not one but TWO Carmack releases on his Soundcloud. The first, “sunday into monday funk” has proved to be my saving grace in dispelling any case of the Mondaze I might have encountered (with a little help from Earth, Wind & Fire), while the second, “by kaytra and me,” provides all the vibes you’d expect to hear in a collaboration between these two extraordinary producers.

Better indulge in these quick considering how quickly Carmack has been switching out the tracks on his Soundcloud as these are not to be missed.
