House | Mimada’s Top 12 for 2012

Posted by on January 5, 2013

With the renaissance of music festivals and growing popularity of electronic music, it’s safe to say my attendance to live shows grew exponentially in 2012 (not that I had that many years under my belt to begin with). However, this really changed my perception of music and how I listened to it. Before, I would see an artist based on my familiarity with them and listen to their songs on repeat in the parking lot until moments leading up to the show. Now, it’s more so that I attend a concert based on the artist’s live talent and/or how much fun the performance will be. When I hear their songs in the future, I get sentiments of that first time I heard it sitting outside in a grassy field surrounded by flag holders or squished up against girls in moonboots rather than it’s premier on SiriXM radio. For me, music in 2012 was not about what would get me out of bed in the morning or play in the background at the gym while I worked out: it was what I could dive into and take me away from any known reality. I guess it’s always kind of been that way, but once you get a peek at my top 12, I think you’ll understand what I mean.

Featured, Review | Lollapalooza 2012

Posted by on August 14, 2012

As a first timer at Lollapalooza, nothing could prepare me for what I witnessed last weekend. 3 days worth of 100,000 people, 130 acts, 8 stages and one astounding Chicago skyline adding the finishing touch to every night. Lollapalooza 2012 reeled in artists from almost every possible genre of music and every corner of the globe, with a crowd of all ages that was alive every second from start to finish.

Friday welcomed the weekend with open arms and clear skies. Perry’s Stage, known for featuring electronic artists, was stripped of its roof and enlarged to accommodate the recent growth of EDM fans. With artists such as Madeon, Porter Robinson, Zedd, Nero, and Bassnectar all in one day, it’s no surprise the stage and entire surrounding area was packed to the brim. Of the most memorable, 18 year old Madeon managed to squeeze in every one of his crowd favorites, from “Finale” to “Pop Culture” in one hour of solid fist pumping, while the underrated duo, Nero, blew the crowd away with their “Feels So Close” remix and “Promises,” featuring live vocalist Alana Watson. For the more laidback audience, there was Passion Pit, M83 and The Shins, never failing to deliver an uplifting show. And for those who just wanted to get down, Wale, Black Sabbath and The Black Keys finished off the day, rocking the night away into the after shows, which kept the music going across town until 4am.

Electro-House | Rather Red – Stigmata

Posted by on August 3, 2012

Rather Red is rather good. He is no stranger to FNT, and is extremely consecutive with his releases which I hold to be very important when I listen to an artist. Thought his mashup of this track with Justice and Simian is good, I have to say the instrumental alone brings greater enjoyment. Rather Red has created some of the most epic remixes, which is why the quality of this track is no surprise but is sweet enough to be one.

This song is meant to be played live with quick moving percussive elements, emotive progressive synths and a massive drop that will send any crowd into a frenzy. The video shows them collaborating on the track, the first play of the track and the crowd reaction, and for you Djs you see Fedde Le Grand’s amazing looking studio. Also after the jump are Sander van Doorn and Mark Knight’s sets from Sensation Belgium, which for those who went was an unreal experience and with it coming to America in October, this iconic event will only grow its legendary status.
