Justin Jay has been on an absolute tear this year. The dirtybird phenom not only announced the release of his debut album, Fantastic Voyage (The Album!), but he also premiered the first four tracks off of his magnum opus, which comprised an EP that has been released on Black Butter Records. As Justin’s Fantastic Voyage tour, which brought SoCal house party vibes all over the world, is starting to wrap up, he’s ramping up the releases again, and he’s starting with the second EP, or part, of his album on Jimpster’s Freerange Records imprint. The two-track EP leads off with “I See You,” an eight-minute track featuring Josh Taylor and Ulf Blonde that takes listeners on a journey through the underground, as Justin lays down a house backbone bolstered by a synth-driven melody and heavy bass kicks. The second track, “Indecision,” is yet another showcase of Justin Jay’s creative genius, as it feels like a tune more fitting for an 80s jazz lounge than a dance imprint, but still displays an undeniable groove. Covering what’s left of your favorite rap tunes of the 2000 era, Outkast’s “Roses” receives the remix treatment by PLS&TY, and he’s not going tropical house a la Matoma, he’s raising the bar, on his grown man shit, going future with it, with smooth tones of jazz to get us into the tune, and I’m feeling it. A friend of mine put me on to Argonaut & Wasp’s debut 4 track EP “Future Protocol” and I must say, I’m pleasantly surprised, this is jazz meets future house, or whatever you want to call it, and it sounds smooth like silk! True to its name, “Future Protocol” is the future, with vibes reminding me a bit of Chromeo or Jamiroquai with the funk. If you’re feeling adventurous, and feel like going on a musical journey tonight, press play, Argonaut & Wasp’s got you covered! This is a must listen and a must download!

Chill, Hip-Hop | Peter $un – Casimiro

Posted by on August 17, 2014

It’s Sunday night, thus here I am scouring the Internet for new rap music to start my week off with. Deep within the abyss of the rap internet I was lucky enough to stumble upon Peter $un, a Virginia native who is looking to bring soul back to the forefront with his jazz-infused music.

Unfortunately, it’s all too easy to throw $un up beside Chance the Rapper. His brilliant use of trumpet, and the falsetto ad-lib at the exposition of the song are to thank for that. However, as Chance moves further and further in to left field, $un could prove to be the more commercially viable and enjoyable for a casual listener.

Just one short verse, Peter $un leave listeners wanted to hear more upon the conclusion of “Casimiro”. While $un works hard to find his voice and place in music, I assure you I’ll be anxiously waiting on this side with my headphones in and volume up.

Bass, Chill, Electro | Sevyn Streeter (ft. Chris Brown) – It Won’t Stop [Manila Killa & Hunt For the Breeze Remix]

Posted by on May 28, 2014

Right about now is the time of the year when all artists kick it in to overdrive with their output of summer-friendly music. A few days ago, Manila Killa and Hunt for the Breeze took to Sevyn Streeter and Chris Brown’s song, “It Won’t Stop” to give it their own special treatment.

With a sound reminiscent of Trippy Turtle, Manila Killa and Hunt for the Breeze bring a jazz-infused and groovy flare to the song. The vocals of Streeter and Brown are incorporated flawlessly with Jersey Club-type synths and breaks.

Enjoy the refreshing track, and toss it on this week’s playlist.

Hip-Hop | Mayo – Rock With You (Prod. By Milo Mills)

Mayo’s back with a Summer banger “Rock With You” and it’s silky smooth. Produced by Milo Mills, “Rock With You” has a bounce to it that you just can’t not feel, and I know this one is going to connect with the ladies, and the fellas for that matter, especially all of your Drake lovers. I have to admit this is my first time listening to Mayo, and lately I’ve been skeptical when it comes to hip hop, as jazz productions and monotonous weird flows are just becoming redundant, and boring, so it’s always refreshing to hear a rap song that I can cruise to with my girl by my side. This is def a must listen!
