Electro, Trance | Ferry Corsten – Black Light // F*ck The Bull$h1t [Preview]

black light

2013 has been good to Mr. Corsten. Since January, he’s celebrated the 300th episode of Corsten’s Countdown and the 100th release on Flashover Recordings, has played a series of absolutely massive gigs (including Madison Square Garden), and of course launched the New World Punx with good buddy Markus Schulz. He even got a wild new ‘do — a nod to the New World Punk lifestyle, perhaps? Somehow, in the midst of all of this, he has managed to find time to hit the studio; “Black Light,” which dropped yesterday and will be immediately recognizable to anyone who’s seen Ferry live this year, is merely the first in a string of giant upcoming releases.

Simply put, “Black Light” is a banger. In the grand tradition of much of today’s trance, it borrows heavily from electro house — but to great effect. The hook is dark and ominous, the bassline packs a serious punch, and the fact that it all goes down at 132 bpm gives the track an added urgency. I’m also loving how the pitch on the leads drops off — very reminiscent of “Mammoth,” which has been a mainstay in Ferry’s recent live sets. If you’re loving “Black Light,” look for “F*ck The Bull$h1t” to hit Beatport on May 17th — it features a stirring, eerie, almost yearning hook and a drop that’s totally unexpected and built to get you in the zone. F*ck the bull$h1t indeed.

Dubstep | Alvin Risk & Designer Drugs – Empty Hearted

Designer-Drugs-Alvin-Risk-Empty-Hearted

Big, big track from Alvin Risk and Designer Drugs. Crisp, dark vocals (presumably from Alvin himself — we know he loves to sing), a killer hook and cool, plinky synths all make this a must-add to your spring rotation. I’m basically just loving this track’s vibe (and, of course, those trademark Alvin “pew pews” after the drop) and hope that we see more like it from this formidable production combo.

Pop, Preview | Naughty Boy – La La La (Ft. Sam Smith)

Naughty Boy - La La La (Ft. Sam Smith)I am usually not one for Pop, but this track will have you moving, grooving, and singing along. The hook really gets to you hooked…seriously. Don’t let the genre scare you away, this track is worth every second of life taken to listen. “La La La” is being released by Virgin Records UK in May, day not yet known.

Trance | Protoculture – Laguna

South African producer (and one of our DJs to watch in 2013) Protoculture hits it out of the park with “Laguna,” his first original release since his 2012 smash “Perpetual Motion.” A catchy, dramatic hook and ethereal vocals set this track apart from the pack — it’s easily one of my favorites from the A State of Trance 2013 compilation. Though Protoculture won’t be joining The Expedition when it lands in Miami next week, expect to hear plenty of “Laguna” now that the season is upon us.

Mashups | DOSVEC – Bright Diamonds

Bright Diamonds

DOSVEC takes Rihanna’s vocals from “Diamonds” and combines it with The Knocks “Brightside” (TheFatRat Mix). This mashup highlights both side of the spectrum by starting off chill on the breakdown then hard on the hook.

With what is one of the best tracks I’ve heard from Sean Dee comes “Bows and Arrows” featuring an incredible hook and production from Anna Yvette. I am absolutely in love with the chorus and Sean Dee rounds out the track nicely with his verses. He definitely has a promising career in front of him.

Trance | Ferry Corsten – Kudawudashuda

ferry corsten

Kicking off an absolutely massive week of releases is Ferry Corsten with “Kudawudashuda,” and I couldn’t be more excited. The hook is catchy and dramatic, the vibe is dark and spacey, and the synthwork is top of the line (I’m a huge sucker for those staccato plucks). This is a song to lose your mind to; it’s the song that’s playing at 4 am when you’ve made it to the tail end of a deep set and time has lost all meaning. Ferry will be joining Armin van Buuren and the whole team on several legs of the ASOT 600 world tour (which launches in Madrid this Thursday), so expect to hear much of this track in the coming weeks. It’s out now on Beatport via Ferry’s own Flashover Recordings and is set to drop on iTunes on February 25.
