Alicia Keys - Unthinkable (Fwdslxsh Remix)

Fwdslxsh releases a more chill tune for our Summer listenings today. Remixing an Alicia Keys classic, Fwdslxsh contributes a wonderful melody to the singers beautiful voice. The track is one build-up, climaxing half way through and then mellowing out again. Where I live it is a terrible looking day outside, this remix turned out to be a perfect fit to put a smile on my face. The track is part of a 26 track compilation from Pragmatic Theory Records called “Elevated Patterns”.

Electro, Trap | Wave Racer FBi Minimix

Where do I even start with this mix… like hold the phone, WOAH. Ima take a quick second to explain to you what happened the first time I heard about this Australian DJ. See that picture above? That was it. The moment the sound waves in “Rock U Tonite” hit me, I was transported into distant land of dolphins, topless Jeeps, girls in 80’s vintage swimsuits and rainbows. Lots of rainbows. It’s possible I even shed a tear. That picture above isn’t some artist’s rendition of my experience, but rather Wave Racer’s Soundcloud user photo. He took me there. And it was awesome.

Anyways, Wave Racer crafted this mix for the Sydney-based radio station FBi 94.5, who described it as…

… [A] melodic treacle drizzling over sweet vocoder that melts like honeycomb in the mouth. All resting on a bed of dense synthcake and thick yet brittle percussion. It’s music too delectable to refuse.

I know that’s a lot to handle (who knows what those upside down Aussies are on these days) so lemme break it down for you. You’ll happen to notice the tracklist doesn’t include any of Wave Racer’s own songs. This mix, rather, is more of a compilation of some of his biggest inspirations (see: Cashmere Cat and Rustie) as well as artists with a similar style who are, essentially, artists you should get to know.

Overall, this mix, and all the artists featured on it, rock. It’s vivacious, it’s psychedelic, it’s carefree, and even at times, it gets a little sensual. Just another example of the thunder DJs are packing down under. Take note.

Chill, Compilation, Indie | Teen Daze – Lost Songs (30 track compilation)

I am well aware that progressive house has become generic, overplayed, mainstream, and incredibly formulaic (also stupid and fat), but I still love it. With that said, I also really enjoy slower, chill sounds. Songs that you can play while knitting a sweater for your grandmother or even just while you stand at the stove stirring that damn macaroni and cheese for 8 minutes. Songs like these are very different from house. They also aren’t as mass produced and oversaturated as house is. It is for these reasons that I was very pleased to find Fraser Valley native, Teen Daze giving away 30 of his unfinished, or “lost” songs for free. I have listened to all 30 and, for the most part, they’re all great. I will say though, I’d go with “Lost Songs 3” as my favorite compilation. The download links to the three compilations are below as well as arguably the top songs from each respective pack on Soundcloud, just to give you a taste. If the redundancy of whatever your preferred genre provides has got you looking for a breath of fresh air then this is it.

Albums, Review | Tiesto Club Life Volume 3: Stockholm (Album Review)

tiesto club life volume 3

If there is a man who has a firm grip on the pulse on the current state of clubland, it is the king of dance music, Tiesto. His consistent support has given rise to countless talents that are mainstays on festival and club stages all across the globe. Whether or not you like his move from trance to big room house, he has been on the forefront of the trends of dance music every step of the way, from his In Search Of Sunrise compilations, to now his 3rd cataloged Club Life compilation.

Much of the compilation draws on Tiesto’s recent anthology. Whether it is his very underrated remix of Passion Pit’s “Carried Away”, or his recent single in the lead up to the release “Take Me”, the compilation shows the tireless nature of Tiesto and his team to get top of line productions out onto the market. The previous 2 Club Life compilations were named after US cities Las Vegas & Miami, respectively, as an ode to their place in his life and his musical career. He has now chosen Swedish capitol, Stockholm as his next tribute, not only because of enormous talent possessed by the producers in the Scandinavian dance music mecca, but also in his incredibly nomadic lifestyle, he calls Stockholm one his homes.

Progressive House, Trance | Norin & Rad – Bird Is The Word

While the track may not have the emphatic ring of the 1968 original from the Trashmen, or the Peter Griffin cover, the Norin & Rad release certainly does have its catchy qualities. Anjunabeats has spent much of the past several months basking in the glow of Anjunabeats Volume 10, releasing singles and remixes from the compilation. They now turn to new originals from their stable of producers, this time tabbing American duo, Bruce Karlsson and Nick Sember, aka Norin & Rad for their follow-up to the euphoric “Aldo” on the label. “Bird Is The Word” brings together a chunky bass line, big room synths and a catchy, chirping top line that brings home the theme of the track.

Progressive House | Tiësto ft. Kyler England – Take Me

Tiesto ft. Kyler England - Take Me

Tiësto and his team have been busy cranking out tracks this year, from remixes for the likes of Passion Pit, Dada Life and Zedd, to now a flurry of originals set for release on his upcoming Tiësto Club Life Volume 3 Stockholm. “Take Me” with LA based vocalist Kyler England, is the first of that onslaught of originals from the compilation, giving us a taste of what we can expect from Tiësto on the collaboration riddled compilation. “Take Me” brings out the big room sound we have quickly become accustomed to hearing from Tiësto, balancing Kyler England’s vocals with an uplifting piano melody that cascades into a synth laden drop ready to rinsed out by the Dutch master this summer.
