Events, Review | Paris & Simo @ Lavo NYC 7/27/13 (Review)

Paris & Simo LAvo NYC

Anybody familiar with high-end nightlife in NYC, knows Lavo and its reputation for an incredibly strict door, good-looking patrons, over-priced drinks and top-line DJs. There are plenty of places in NYC with the first three, but few have added the last one to their repertoire.

On this particular night, I was a bit sluggish from getting home from a rather aggressive night of drinking with Moiez the night before, thus I was hoping Paris & Simo would bring it to keep me going. After quickly crushing a Red Bull at a nearby Duane Reed, a walked down the familiar block of 58th in between Park & Madison, seeing drunk dudes and chicks spilling out of cabs and town cars, yelling at each other as if their hearing was already gone before they made their way into the proper line. Navigating the line is an art, pushing your way through entitled VIPs and b-rate models, just hoping to be seen by somebody, it is your job to be noticed in the mixture of plastic…. and plastic.

Dubstep, Electro, House | The Two Friends – You (Me) EP & Remixes

Posted by on February 26, 2013

The Two Friends - You (Me) EP & RemixesThe Two Friends’ EP, “You (Me) EP” has been out for a little less than a month now. Since its release, the EP has charted in Beatport’s Progressive House section at #4. Today they have dropped their hefty remix EP containing remixes from a long list of great up and coming producers, providing a large array of styles tried out on the originals. Seeing how their are so many remixes to pick from, I have to narrow down my top 5 not including the originals. Moiez created a beautiful House remix, I love how the vocal were used and the melody is mesmerizing. The Slap The Bag & Mapp remix uses a lot of classic House synths, once the drop comes in the track is a journey of wonderful sounds.

PrototypeRaptor’s remix might be my favorite of all the remixes. I love the funky Electro vibes that he has going throughout this track, it was something I was just not prepared to hear. Of course Gazzo had to create an equally incredible remix. He always places the vocals perfectly over the instrumentals he creates, it’s like Gazzo has a sixth or maybe even a seventh sense. His remix is perfect raging material. Picking a fifth track is not easy, every remix on this EP is good. It came down to the roll of a die, literally, I had to take it out of my Monopoly game. The winner is Clark Kent’s crazy Dubstep remix. Ever since his remix of “Skyfall,” I have been sold on his skills as a producer. My top 5 in no way reflects how great this remix EP actually is. I highly recommend giving each remix a listen, they will not disappoint.

Electro, House | The Two Friends – 2F Friendly Sessions, Ep. 2 (Milk N Cookies Guest Mix)

Posted by on January 17, 2013

The Two Friends are back with another episode of the “Friendly Sessions,” this time with guest artists Milk N’ Cookies. Mixes are hard for me to listen to because I am incredibly A.D.D. with my music. To better my opinion of music I force myself to listen and it’s times like this where I was glad I did. The Two Friends have never disappointed me with a mix and Milk N Cookies were an incredible addition for this episode. The track list was something of a surprise. Though I know the two groups are good producers, I half expected the usuals in this mix. Instead I ended up even seeing a few favorites of my own like MiTis, Tristan Garner, W&W, and many others. If you are bored with mixes as of late, this mix switches it up more for our listening pleasure.

DJ-Set, Progressive House | Weekend Mixes Year End Edition

Posted by on December 28, 2012

It is that time of the year, when the calendar fast approaches a new year and DJs give us reflective mixes on the music that they felt were the biggest tracks of the year. It is only December 28th, so the pickings are somewhat slim on these sets, but I couldn’t leave you guys hanging on this weekend, so here are the sets out now. We start things off with the 2012 retrospective episode of The Drop that mixes in 56 songs in 2 hours including their top 5 of the year (spoiler alert we agree with 2 of the songs). Next up are not one but TWO year end mixes from Laidback Luke, one being his own famous year end mix with its dizzying quick transitions averaging packing 70 songs into 70 minutes and then his mix for his imprint Mixmash records that only has a pedestrian 44 tracks in 70 minutes. Next up is Moiez and his year end mix that takes us through some of the biggest tracks of the year ranging from W&W’s “Lift Off” to DubVision’s remix of Committed to Sparkle Motion”. After the jump we have mixes from First State that mixes in 76 songs in 2 hours, the December mix from Dannic that includes a whole host of unreleased and exclusive tracks, a half hour mix from Jakob Liedholm that includes his now IDed track with Henrix “Close Your Eyes” that has been haunting me for the past several months and the 4th edition of Dzeko & Torres Rave’N podcast with some exclusive bootlegs and edits.

Progressive House | Ellie Goulding – Hanging On (Tom Swoon Remix)

Posted by on August 2, 2012

Tom Swoon, formerly known as Pixel Cheese, has provided his talents to remix this beautiful Ellie Goulding track. He lends his progressive flavor to the track with a well layered, uplifting melody to accompany Ellie Goulding’s angelic vocals and a tasteful, crafty dubstep interlude to carry us to an even bigger second drop. This remix takes a different approach than the Moiez remix, going for more of an upbeat, big room festival vibe. This is a fantastic track that is available for free, so there is no excuse for you not to grab it immediately.

Electro-House, Progressive House | My Digital Enemy & Rob Marmot – African Drop (Tom Staar Remix)

Posted by on July 5, 2012

Tom Staar takes this Ibiza ready, island track and fills it with festival fury. He keeps much of the Caribbean vibes with the vocal bits and funky percussion in the build, but once we get to the drop, the track totally changes tempo and becomes something entirely different. With its grungy undertones, a fast firing percussion, almost like being shot out of a cannon, and a thumping bass, the largesse of this track will be heard worldwide. Already supported by Alesso, Axwell and Sebastian Ingrosso, this one is bound to become a late festival hit as the season comes into full swing this July and August.

Also included is the latest remix from Moiez of Jetpack Jones’ single “Jetpack Lifestyle”. It does pretty well with keeping much of the same chill vibes of the original track (a quality track) and adds an uplifting drop, creating a nice blend of house and hip hop. May not be his best effort we have seen to date, but definitely a good track.
