Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | King Louie – Showtime (Mixtape)

Posted by on July 9, 2012

King Louie has been one of Chicago’s most respected up and coming rapper’s for a while now, even getting a shout-out from Kanye in the “I Don’t Like” remix. What we have here is his brand new mixtape. This 22 track tape is bound to please all musical tastes with some slowed down tracks, some upbeat ones, and of course a lot of trap beatz. Be on the lookout for more Louie, because this tape is too raw.

Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | YONAS – The Transition [Mixtape]

Posted by on June 25, 2012

The moment YONAS’ music first graced my ears, I knew I had come across a special individual.  That was a couple months before the Bronx, NY native had released his debut independent album, The Proven Theory.  At the time, I didn’t know much about YONAS outside what I had extracted from the few singles I had heard.  I went on his website and ordered myself a copy of his album.  When I received it in the mail a week later, packed & shipped from his managers apartment, I realized just how independent and driven this kid was.  Since then, The Proven Theory has not left the 10-disc visor folder in my car.  It’s my go to.

Several singles, remixes, and videos later, Y-O welcomes us to The Transition.  A comprehensive 15-track project featuring a contagious blend of hip-hop infused with electronic beats, hard hitting bass, and conceptual rhymes.  There’s no question YONAS is a bully in the booth, but he articulates his rhymes as well as any artist in the game.  He has flourished largely because of his versatile style and confidence to make the music he wants to make.  Featuring 7 previously released tracks, along with 8 brand new ones, this project has something for everyone.  Young Sinatra aka Logic, makes a guest spot on the tape along with one of YONAS’ idols, Brother Ali, as well as Scotty James.  Production credits due to Sean Divine (YONAS’s right hand man who has been credited with the majority of his original production to date), along with DJ Corbett, & Sean Ross among others.  For any new listener, keep an open mind and embrace the art YONAS has created.  This is a must download.  #TheTransition.

Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | Joey Bada$$ – 1999 (Mixtape)

Posted by on June 19, 2012

Joey Bada$$, an upcoming Brooklyn emcee, drops off this phenomenal mixtape. The kid is oozing with talent at just 17 years young. My favorite part of the mixtape has to be the beats. Using the 90s, A Tribe Called Quest sounding beats, Joey flows effortlessly over them. This one has to be in my top 5 mixtapes of the year, hands down. Make sure to peep the tape below. Also, shouts to Eric from SBG for the heads up on this one.

Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | XV – Pop Culture (Mixtape)

Posted by on June 15, 2012

Best mixtape of 2012. I know that’s not the best way to start out a post, but I had to make my feelings known to everyone before I embarked on the journey of trying to illustrate my feelings on this mixtape into a somewhat concise blog post. Wow that was a long sentence. Sorry, I’m rambling. Back to the mixtape. XV’s “Pop Culture” is absolutely off the charts, his beat selections are perfect, and his lyrics are witty, well delivered, and hard hitting. He goes from emotional songs, like “The Kick,” to high energy songs like “Her Favorite Song,” without missing a beat. He has some amazing features, including BoB, Schoolboy Q, and Emilio Rojas. On the production side, he lists his favorite beat maker, The Awesome Sound, along with Xaphoon Jones to craft the canvases he paints his pictures on. It’s an incredibly well rounded and diverse mixtape, and I think it has something for everyone.

XV’s “Zero Heroes” was my favorite mixtape of 2011, so let’s hope “Pop Culture” holds it’s spot as my favorite mixtape of 2012.

Chill, Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | Jetpack Jones – Afterburners (Mixtape)

Posted by on May 27, 2012

Jetpack Jones, one of SoCal’s fastest growing artists, drops of his latest work of art. I find myself always feeling the same about Jetpack’s music, so I’m running out of good things to say about him. So for fear of sounding redundant, I won’t go on my usual rant about his creativity, imagination, etc.. The tape starts off with a few audio bytes from one of my favorite motivational speeches of all time, “As soon as you want success as bad as you want to breath…” Definetly something to be used in the gym or before games to get you pumped up. The mixtape is full of tracks just like this, perfect for all ocassions, and they all have one thing in common; transport music. Transport music is a word I used to describe Jetpack’s music a few months ago, and it fits perfectly. His music transports you out of this world, and lets you forget about all of the stressors of your daily life. If you don’t know, this mixtape was released for free, but cost plenty to make, so the least you can do is like Jetpack’s facebook page below.

Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | 50 Cent – The Lost Tape (Mixtape)

Posted by on May 22, 2012

NEWS FLASH: 50’s back. After taking a detour since his last album Before I Self Destruct, Fif releases his latest mixtape The Lost Tape with DJ Drama doing the mixing. Whetting our appetite for his anticipated album coming later this year, which is thankfully going to be a return to Get Rich Or Die Tryin’ (was supposed to be last year, but as usual Interscope Records is all up in his business), this mixtape is a flash of the old Curtis Jackson. The tape features Eminem, Snoop Dogg, 2 Chainz and fellow G-Unit members Kidd Kidd (on three tracks) and Precious Paris, with beats from Araab Muzik, Tone Mason, Illmind and Mike Will to name a few. Some of the best tracks in my opinion include Swag Level, Riot Remix (which goes ultra HAM) and Murder One. Check out the tracks and download below.
