Albums, Bass, Electronic | Run DMT – Starlight Ft. Betty Black : The Remixes
Posted by J-Tiffy on October 17, 2013
This remix EP showcases four dimensions of an extremely powerful song. The original by RUN DMT is deep and heavy, beautifully coordinating Betty Black’s spectral vocals with big driving bass, distant guitar chords and awesome synth plucks. The Kodak To Graph remix is a chilled out and trapped up version that adds sounds reminiscent of Phonat’s style – very cool. Now to the hard hitters. The Dirt Monkey remix is loud and angry. It adds huge, harsh sounds that create an edgy, rough feel while still maintaining some of that juicy emotion from the original. Now, for the remix that, for the time being, comes out ahead as my favourite on the EP. The SPL version starts out with an ambient intro, introducing wicked saxophone sounds. The vocals are whispered into focus and the energy is built up to the mad drum and bass segment that is bursting with energy. The vocal verse is introduced at the perfect moment in this segment, and is used to carry you through to the next drop which takes on another beat entirely. The remix is epic, really a blast to listen to, and the whole EP is a treat. Literally a treat, as in all of the four massive songs are free to download.
Bass | Chase & Status – International (Skrillex Remix)
Posted by J-Tiffy on October 17, 2013
This is why we wait patiently when artists don’t release songs as often as we would like, or as often as they used to. Everyone wants a piece of the Skrillmeister (be it for positive or negative reasons) and he has his hands on a million different projects at once. In interviews, Moore has stated that he does not release material unless he is completely satisfied with the result, often citing difficulties deciding how to put together albums or EPs. I respect that mentality. Obviously he decided that this remix was ready to rock, and I would have to fully agree. I like a lot of the projects that Skrillex has contributed toward, and this remix is no exception. It is included on the new Chase & Status album, and feels right at home in that collection. This tune is well-crafted and really is an excellent remix of the original. It shakes the walls, and I love it.
Electronic, Mix | OWSLA After Dark Pt.III: The M Machine – Space Jams
Posted by J-Tiffy on September 24, 2013
I have to start by saying that I am still reeling from the Phonat mix; I still sit with mouth agape while listening to it. I am so thankful that there are labels like OWSLA – awesome music is served out on silver platters, and artists that really deserve attention are given just that. I am even more thankful for the artists – like The M Machine and Phonat – that continue to strive to be better and to be different. Robin Thicke could write a song about what these musicians do to genre definitions. With every original, every remix and every mix, The M Machine is changing the way that people think about music. These guys bring ideas to life that are nothing short of brilliant. It truly is amazing that a group of individuals can interweave their respective imaginations into such complete works of art. Their latest work is an hour long mix that aired during the OWSLA time slot on BBC Radio 1Xtra, and in classic M Machine fashion, it exceeds expectations. Forget what you know about genres and rules, and just accept this for the greatness that it is.
Chill, Trap | Gladys Knight – Grapevine (Mr. Carmack Remix)
Posted by J-Tiffy on September 16, 2013
Mr. Aaron Carmack seems like a cool dude. I’m a big fan of his music styles and of the way that he (like Deadmau5) has a Soundcloud profile dedicated exclusively to posting his unreleased tracks. On his profile you will find a whole collection of unreleased gems spanning many genres, many of them defying definition. A lot of his songs have trap influences and nuances; this track being one of them. He builds a great chill vibe around the old Gladys Knight original vocals. It’s a soothing tune all the way through, but when the keys come in around the 2 minute mark, you just can’t help but sink back into your chair and relax. He is giving this one away as a free download, so grab it and toss it into the running for songs that start your day or finish your night.
Mix | NEST HQ MiniMix: Phonat
Posted by J-Tiffy on September 12, 2013
Phonat is an amazing artist. His latest six song EP “Identity Theft” contained some of the most creative, technical, and forward-thinking contemporary music available, in my opinion. It houses songs ranging from dark and chilling, to ambient, to funky and bright. Phonat’s music pushes boundaries without sacrificing sophistication. More recently, he crafted a remix for Andrew Bayer’s excellent track, “Need Your Love“, which rivalled the brilliance of the original. His funky, soulful, and glicthy futuristic sound is addictive and inspiring.
This mix is a masterpiece. Phonat moves with ease between genres – all accented by his innovative yet accessible sound. It is an impossibly smooth compilation of deep house, euphoric dubstep, soul, and Phonat’s own brand of future sound. The songs and sounds are carefully selected, and the transitions are beyond slick. He has created a mix that whisks you on away and takes you on an adventure.
Along with this mix, The Nest HQ posted an interview with the man in question; Michele Balduzzi. The mix is free to download, and I very highly recommend that you do so.
Progressive House | Twenty One Pilots – Guns For Hands (Dzeko & Torres Remix)
Posted by J-Tiffy on September 10, 2013
Dzeko & Torres were right on the money with this track. I love the vocals from the original song, and this remix really uses them in an awesome way. The vocals and melody were ripped out of the original, and then pumped full of enough energy and feel-good vibes to make you groove, even in the worst of moods. The main synth line is so well engineered, and when it sneaks in it gets right under your skin and doesn’t give you the option to not feel this tune. It’s a festival sized progressive house track with a righteous heart. This track moves me, and I know it will make you move. Do not sleep on the Maarcos remix included in the package as well. His track “Blaze” got heavy support this summer and this remix only continues his streak of great productions.

Bass, Electronic, Mix | OWSLA After Dark Pt.II: Kill The Noise
Posted by J-Tiffy on September 4, 2013
So I’m on a Kill The Noise kick, but can you blame me? He dropped his remix EP and then BOOM he unleashes this huge mix. I think Kill The Noise is an amazing artist and I’m such a huge fan of his music, but I might be an even bigger fan of his mixes. His song choices, arrangement, and transitions are always progressive and spot on. This is an hour of powerful music; it’s heavy, it’s excellently mixed, and best of all, it’s Fresh.
I’ve included Part 1 of OWSLA’s After Dark series; another bass filled mix by Jack Beats, which is also great. You can catch upcoming mixes from this series live on BBC 1Xtra. The times, dates and artists are listed on the Souncloud page I’ve linked. Here’s hoping they keep the wicked mixes coming.
