Hip-Hop, Videos | Logic – Walk On By (Prod. by C-Sick) [Music Video]

This morning I watched legendary blogstar and hip-hop mogul, Elliot Wilson, share his picks for the XXL Freshman 2013 cover.  Let me start off by saying Elliot is a legend. A role model for any blogger.   Poseidon to a sea of blog minnos.  I’ll follow that by noting the fact that he, and many other well respected industry names, have either bypassed Maryland’s young prince or have not yet opened their ears to him.  While Trinidad James is poppin’ molly, Logic is in the studio working.  While Gunplay is rambling about getting locked up and blowin’ snow at 16, Logic is meticulously lining up bars in the studio.

“Who woulda thought that painting pictures of being broke would get me rich as like dealin’ coke” – Logic

Peace and positivity is what Logic stands for.  Under that umbrella, Logic emphatically delivers some of the rawest lyrics I’ve heard this decade.  “Walk On By” marks the first official single off his highly anticipated senior mixtape due out later this spring. Visuals by GRVTY (of course) and production comes from Logic’s Chi-town brother, C-Sick.  As  expected, this new cut will leave you dissecting lines longer than Gunplay’s morning…well, wake up line. Enjoy and expect a HUGE year for L-O-G-I-C. #VMG

Hip-Hop, Videos | Mike Stud – Started From The Bottom (Remix)

Posted by on February 5, 2013

[do action=”youtube” videoid=”Or9n62N2jwE”/]

A few days back Drake released “Started From The Bottom”, a preview off his third studio album. It didn’t take long for Mike Stud to catch wind of it and have Paul Judge produce a remake of the instrumental so he could take his hand at it. I can’t take sides on which is my favorite because I dig both versions, but I definitely think Mike set the bar high on this one. There couldn’t have been a better candidate to do a remix of this song. If you never heard the original from Drake you can listen here.

Albums | Deadmau5 – > album title goes here < (Review)

Posted by on September 27, 2012

Deadmau5 dropped his much-anticipated sixth studio album on Tuesday, marking the culmination of what has been a long, fascinating-to-watch process that played out largely on Soundcloud and the mau5’s Ustream channel. While > album title goes here < is not as groundbreaking or explosive as some of Joel Zimmerman’s past efforts — in fact, it’s been handily derided by a number of critics for feeling “tired” and “stale” and like “a Sasha and John Digweed set from 1997” — it is in fact very much in keeping with Joel’s ethos as a musician and seems reflective of both his state of mind and his (occasionally prickly) attitude towards the music industry.

In many ways, > album title goes here < is classic mau5. The production is polished to an obsessive extent, with deceptively simple but pitch-perfect synths playing off of one another to create the multi-dimensional soundscapes he is known for. The majority of tracks fall in the six to nine minute range, and eschew big, heady drops for the slow-burn builds favored by the tech house denizens of yore. Though indie darling Imogen Heap and My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way both have vocal credits, this is not a poppy album by any means — it is restrained, nuanced, and at times incredibly minimal, an album for the connoisseurs. There are moments when you’ll likely find yourself thinking of tech house and trance; ever the iconoclast, Joel is not one to do what people expect. He is, however, one for working through his creative highs and lows with his fans watching, meaning that you will probably recognize several of the tracks from their earlier stages (“Fn Pig,” “There Might Be Coffee,” “Superliminal” and “Closer” were all posted on Soundcloud long before they were finished). While some may be disappointed by the comparative “lack” of new material, there is nonetheless something fitting and decidedly mau5-ish about seeing these tracks in their final incarnation on the album.

Overall, > album title goes here < is something to listen to from start to finish, with each song contextualized against the next. It’s an album for a roadtrip, or your headphones, or a long evening at home. There’s no bombast here, but there’s an almost intellectual level of mastery on display; unlike much of today’s EDM, it just happens to lie in the subtleties.

Pop, RnB | Somo- My Life (Mixtape)

Posted by on September 11, 2012

Just a few weeks ago, I travelled to Allen, Texas to get in the studio with Joseph Somo and Cody Tarpley. Somo and team allowed us to get an early preview of “My Life” in its final stages. We knew from the onset that this project would be something special. I’ve said it before and I’m going to say it again: This is easily one of the strongest debut mixtapes I’ve ever listened to from an up-and-coming artist in all my blog years. There are many that come close, but this one takes the cake. It should be apparent by now that Joseph Somo is the real deal. Download the mixtape below, it’ll be the best decision that you make all week.

Electro-House, Moombahton | Alvin Risk – Infinity (Preview) & Dirty Dancer Remix

Posted by on April 12, 2012

Protege to Skrillex, Alvin Risk is a force to reckon with. One of my favorite things about him is that he doesn’t just stick to one genre of music, he dabbles in Moombahton, Dubstep, and Electro-House. His title track ‘Infinity’ is a dark, but awesome dance tune. The build up is intense and shocks you once that dance forever drop goes down. I am sure we will get to see a few sides of him on his upcoming EP, ‘Infinity,’ which drops April 24th on Dim Mak Records.

Now it is time to delete all of those awful rips of Alvin Risk’s ‘Dirty Dancer’ remix that all of you have. He seemed to have just enabled the downloads for the tracks 320kbps on his soundcloud (that means it’s studio quality). This track is awesome, Moombahton at its finest and then some. Enjoy.

Electro, Freestyle, Hip-Hop, House, Rap, Throwbacks | Snoop Dogg and Soundcloud: A Love Story

Posted by on March 20, 2012

A few days ago, Snoop Dogg was handed a slip of paper that would change the face of the modern world forever. On it were the username and password to a Soundcloud account — an account long forgotten and gathering dust, an account more unloved and underutilized than so many Myspace pages of yore. We don’t know how this account came into existence (from the looks of page 7, it was set up by his management team about a year ago), but these details are unimportant now. Because for whatever reason, on this fated March morning, Snoop Dogg set out to make his Soundcloud the greatest effing Soundcloud on the planet.

I’m not kidding when I say that. This is one of the most epic and entertaining things I’ve come across in a long time. My running theory is that Snoop Dogg hit 47 js and then parked himself in front of his computer for 15 hours, just uploading without so much as a bathroom break. I’ve been sitting at work going through this thing and it’s literally a goldmine — there are rough cuts, studio outtakes, instrumentals that are far from finished, remakes of some of his older tracks, and then total curve balls like this hour long disco-funk-electro-tinged-slow-jam-heavy mix that I can’t even do justice to in words. It’s a weird but wonderful insight into his creative process, and the best part is that everything up there is a free download. If you’ve been in need of a good Snoop Dogg fix since 2004, this is your moment. And even if you haven’t been, do yourself a favor and check his stuff out anyway. All the major musical foodgroups are covered: “SNOOPADELIC MIXX,” “BLOWFLY G SHIT,” and, of course, just…”GOOD MUSIC.”

Snoop, we’ve missed you. Welcome back to the game.

SNOOP DOGG’S SOUNDCLOUD: 5+ Pages of Straight Up SC Gold

Edit: goodness, he just uploaded like eight more tracks in the past 20 minutes. Snoop Dogg, what are you up to over there? Is this a livestream of your life? Whatever, I dig it. His SC is about to blow up like the puppy cam.
