Hip-Hop, Rap | 21 – The Pink Bride

Posted by on March 9, 2014

With only five songs to his name on SoundCloud, to say that Memphis emcee, 21, has already made a statement with his music would be selling him short. Each of his songs pulses with raw talent that is becoming a necessary prerequisite to stand apart from the overly-saturated independent rap world.

In his latest offering, “The Pink Bride”, 21 fearlessly dives in to a Ta-Ku production that artists with far more notoriety would have shied away from. Illustrating the trials and tribulations of a past relationship, “The Pink Bride” serves as an emotional roller-coaster for 21 himself, as well as the listeners that are so easily swallowed up by the story.

Hopefully, we will be seeing 21 again soon, possibly with some original production to reassure the potential that many -including myself- see in him.

Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | Maxxx Flair — S.E.I.S. [Chapter 1]

I’m all for self-expression, but the extent to which under-and-post-grads have begun chasing down full-time careers in hip-hop is concerning. It seems to signify the misconception that attaining a lucrative presence in the genre comes with ease; you don’t need to know music theory, don’t need to be able to play an instrument, and don’t really even need a good singing voice, though it certainly helps your versatility and is more appealing in this post-So Far Gone era of hip-hop. Thus, for those who like to write and like the idea of stardom and like the idea of feeding their egos, hip-hop seems like a relatively simple and satisfying career aspiration. It helps, too, that this is 2014 and gangsta rap is no longer the forefront of the genre. We’ve reached a time when there is no defined rapper aesthetic, when Sammy Adams is as equally recognizable as an emcee as Bun B. This is all to say that every day bloggers around the country have their inboxes stocked with thoroughly uninspired rap. Rap that at least attempts to replicate the sounds and flows of what already exists on the radio, as if recycling Big Sean’s flow from “All Me” guarantees radio placement.

This is why it’s so exciting to receive a record like S.E.I.S. It’s surprisingly easy when you listen to an album to tell if the artist enjoyed making it, and whether its sound is genuine and authentic. When that is the case, it’s that much more fun to digest, and it doesn’t make you question the artist’s goals. If the passion is there, they’re not only more likely to do the work necessary to become a success to the extent of a Macklemore or Logic or Hoodie Allen — which is really hard — but also that probably doesn’t even matter to them. It’s art, it’s their passion, and the unlikelihood of acceptance shouldn’t hold them back — the same way that the low acceptance rate at top law schools doesn’t keep hopefuls from applying in bulk. Maxxx Flair, an NYC native, was first featured on FNT in 2012 with “Forever Dope”, and while he was already a budding emcee at the time, his progression as a lyricist and technical rapper is immediately made clear from the first few bars of the intro. Fueled by a solid selection of lively, hard-hitting beats, Maxxx shines over this set of seven tracks, showcasing his finesse with cadence, wide range of flows, and strong attention-to-detail as a writer. Accompanying the mixtape is the video for the first single, “F@#K !t”, produced by 52 Kings, which you can find below. If you take a chance on one new rapper this week, let it be him.

Hip-Hop, Rap | Vonny del Fresco – Noir Designer

Posted by on January 12, 2014

With the sheer volume of new rappers emerging every day, it never ceases to amaze me how small the hip-hop community actually is. The interconnectivity of all us youngins’ once again came around full circle when “Noir Designer” graced my inbox earlier this week. Although I was familiar with Vonny del Fresco, I never had sat down and truly listened to what he had to offer.

The distorted voice and harsh passion he brings with every line, helps del Fresco paint a vivid picture of a woman caught up in the materialistic glitz and glamour. The almost-satanic sounding song is the antithesis of a typical ballad. As del Fresco explains,

“Noir Designer” tells the tale of a night’s encounter with a female living in a materialistic world, feeding off of greed inspired by her surroundings.

A beautiful exterior disguises inner ugliness.

The finer things allow her to feel secure, indulgence in excess–drugs, sex, sparkling nights–helps her cope.

She meets someone who understands her urges–a man who wants nothing more than to use her in exchange for giving her everything she desires.

A powerful message put forward in a strikingly blunt and confrontational manner is all summed up with a thought-provoking question: Is this modern love?

Chill, Hip-Hop | BONES – Calcium (prod. by Kid HNRK)

Posted by on January 2, 2014

Wow, this track really surprised me (in a good way). “Calcium” is one track off of Bones’s mixtape called “Deadboy”. This track is produced by Kid HNRK, and that’s how I came to find it, since I’m not usually one to be sifting through rap mixtapes. The beat on this song is amazing. It’s chill and eerie, and sounds great with Bones. It gives me sort of a Clams Casino kind of vibe. Grab his mixtape for more cool tracks.

Largemarc - Fizzle Freestyle (Prod. By Fitzroy)Largemarc spits cool smiles over Fizroy’s bouncy and upbeat instrumentals. Playful tracks like this are a little out of the norm. It’s a nice change of pace from all the frat rap and gangsta rap that sweeps over the airwaves on the daily.

The homie SoulJAH sent over this track “BlastPhaMe” where he raps over Schoolboy Q’s “Grooveline” in anticipation for the release of his debut mixtape “JahBless” out November 28. JAH’s been featuring on a few tracks with the NewLA crew, notably on one of my favorite tracks off Joe Cool’s latest mixtape Driver’s Ed “My Word.” At the look of things the boys from Louisiana are about to be a problem, they always deliver with bars that stand out and rap with meaning. Shout out to Louisiana, this is a must listen!
