Last week one of my favorite bands, Phoenix, dropped their long-anticipated new album, Bankrupt! — their most recent project in almost four years. Needless to say, anything they release has been very meticulously crafted and revised, and unlike most artists’ work that I get sent these days, there weren’t any songs which I imagined could be improved or made better than they already were. Thus, when One Love sent me his remix to a favorite of the album that we shared, “Trying To Be Cool”, I was skeptical. Not only am I not generally a huge fan of remixes, but this was Phoenix. The changes here are relatively subtle, but One Love has a tremendous ear for melody, and manages to really enliven the track’s feel into more of a dance hit without losing its foundational strengths. For those looking for some higher quality music for their parties, this edit is a wonderful link between Phoenix’s terrific sound and One Love’s energetic production. Enjoy!

Progressive House | Laidback Luke & Hardwell – Dynamo

Laidback Luke & Hardwell - DynamoThis collaboration came a bit out of left field. Laidback Luke and Hardwell on one track should produce magic, especially at this stage of their careers. Coming off his massive Ultra set, Hardwell brings it back the classic Hardwell sound that catapulted him to fame in 2011 with tracks like “Cobra”, “Encoded” and “The World”. Laidback Luke has also been pretty quiet lately only with the release of “Pogo” bringing him production success recently, as his Dutch sound is imprinted on this track. It may just be me, but with these two talents, this song seems a bit rushed and something is missing to make it great. It is a very good song, but it seems like it could have been better. Also, the virtual DJ air horn is just a bit much.

Hip-Hop | Diverse – Beat 003

Notorious B.I.G. & Tupac I love classic styled Hip-Hop, the beats were not so over complicated that you never actually wound up listening to what was being said. I feel like a lot of newer syled Hip-Hop is over saturated with instrumentals and bass leaving the art of rap at a loss to the listener. The samples taken from “Deadly Combination” featuring Tupac, Biggie, and Big L were a perfect fit. Diverse did sick work on this production, with a simplistic but fresh beat.

DO SOMETHING

Electro | SikDuo – BOOM

Sampling LL Cool J’s 1995 hit “Mama Said Knock You Out”, SikDuo takes LL’s memorable vocals and molds them around their own original production to make a song that easily lives up to its title “Boom”. It definitely gives the song a classic touch to its modern Electro sound. Best yet, it is a free download, so grab the track below.

Dubstep | Alvin Risk & Designer Drugs – Empty Hearted

Designer-Drugs-Alvin-Risk-Empty-Hearted

Big, big track from Alvin Risk and Designer Drugs. Crisp, dark vocals (presumably from Alvin himself — we know he loves to sing), a killer hook and cool, plinky synths all make this a must-add to your spring rotation. I’m basically just loving this track’s vibe (and, of course, those trademark Alvin “pew pews” after the drop) and hope that we see more like it from this formidable production combo.

British producer Eden Anderson, aka Special Features, coming off of his remix of Walden’s “Intropial“, makes his triumphant return to Big Beat Records with his new single “Illusions“. A name who has cemented himself as must watch up and comer, makes his single debut on New York City based, Big Beat Records, which is having a great year of its own with releases like “Together We Are” and the Kill Paris remix of Rudimental‘s “Feel The Love“. “Illusions” provdes much of the same melodic tendencies we have seen in the past with Special Features, using fast paced key work, playful arps and cheery melodies to create yet another outstanding production. On the horizon, Special Features has a remix coming for Ellie Goulding, which knowing her vocal prowess and his production style, it should mesh very well.
