Progressive House | Fedde le Grand & Nicky Romero ft. Matthew Koma – Sparks (Turn Off Your Mind)
Posted by Middy on August 27, 2012
Finally after a 3 week delay we have the vocal version of “Sparks”, the massive anthemic single from Fedde le Grand & Nicky Romero with rising vocal asset, Matthew Koma bringing everything together. When I first heard the preview above and then the instrumental, the song just sounded odd without the vocals. It just did not seem not seem right without the vocals regardless of the small changes in the mix between the two. Matthew Koma brings this summer anthem to its full potential and it is something you must have, period.

Electro-House | Zedd & Nicky Romero – Human

Zedd and Nicky Romero’s much-anticipated collaboration is out today on Interscope, and unfortunately I can’t shake the feeling that these two could have (should have?) produced something more…explosive. Both boast top shelf production skills and well-honed musical ears. Both are known for the palpable level of intensity that defines the majority of their tracks. But this? This just seems depressingly, confusingly average. There’s so much promise leading up to the drop, with the vocals magnified against that pulsing build, but then…nada. Real talk, I’ll be sticking with “Sparks” and the much more interesting body of “Spectrum” remixes.

I’ll get the bad out of the way first: the drop in this clip is pretty underwhelming. I had insanely high hopes when I saw that these two were collaborating and let’s just say that my expectations were not fully met. But now the good: the build prior to the drop is amazing, and this preview is short, so who knows what else “Human” might have in store? The vocals are excellent and it’s clear that Nicky Romero and Zedd are bringing the top quality production skills that we’ve all grown accustomed to seeing in their work over the past year, so I look forward to hearing this in full when it drops (update: as part of Zedd’s hotly-anticipated Spectrum EP) on July 31. Fingers crossed that they’re purposely denying us the best that this collabo has to offer…

No two ways about it: today is a huge day for releases. In addition to Afrojack’s “Rock the House”, Fedde Le Grand & Nicky Romero’s epic collaboration with Matthew Koma is now officially out on Beatport. Middy has already suggested that “Sparks” will prove to be one of 2012’s anthems, and I can’t say that I disagree; with adrenaline-baiting builds and an aggressively high energy synth hook, this banger has all the necessary ingredients to become one of the defining songs of the summer. Though the vocal mix with Matthew Koma will not be available until August 6th, the instrumental mix shows just how powerful a track this is.
What are your picks for summer anthem so far? Let us know in the comments or the chat box.

This summer has lacked that signiature track that really defined the sound of the summer. Last summer had “Levels” and more specifically “Calling”. “In My Mind” is still getting plenty of air play because it has yet to see a song unseat it as song of the year, but otherwise for potential anthems released this summer, you will come up empty. “Sparks” may just be that song. I am not guaranteeing an anthem from this track because I am not Nostradamus, but if this song were getting drafted into the anthem draft, it would go number one this summer. It will have stiff competition from two tracks coming out in the coming weeks in “Top Of The World” and Afrojack – Rock The House, but either way watch out because sparks will fly on July 16th when this is unleashed on the world.
Events, Review | Nervo & Norman Doray @ Pacha NYC 6/16

Though this was 10 days ago, the memory is still quite vivid at the Nervo sister’s ability to manipulate the crowd and Norman Doray’s mastery behind the decks. I was unable to head into the area behind the dj booth as I was 96 hours away from my 21st birthday, but sometimes being in the crowd is just as good being able to share all the energy of the music with your fellow music lovers. Nervo stepped onto the decks at around 1pm after a solid opening tech set from the resident Dj at Pacha getting the crowd at a fever pitch of anticipation for the Aussie twins. They started off their set with some different tracks than your typical top 40 beatport rotation, which was very interesting and refreshing to hear. They then transitioned from these tracks as the clock moved towards 1:45 with their upcoming hit single with Hook N Sling – Reason (video below) that is a going to be huge when it releases.
Then they started to pick up the pace with their set, getting into their progressive sound with their tracks the Hook N Sling remix of “We’re All No One” and their collaboration with Steve Aoki and Afrojack on the Tomorrowland Anthem. Tommy Trash made a surprise visit to support his compatriots, which brought the crowd to a frenzy and the Nervo twins obliged by dropping his remix of “Wicked Woman”. Tommy Trash was a ball of energy in the Dj booth, but let the Nervo twins have their night as they continued to churn out hits with tracks like “Trio” and then more unreleased tracks such as “Like Home” with Nicky Romero (video below) and their famed song with Omarion “Army” (video at end in 2 parts). They finally relinquished the decks at around 3am, leaving the crowd sweating and wanting more, but it was time for the French up and comer, Norman Doray to show us what he was made of. Check out the rest after the jump.
