Progressive House | Calvin Harris feat. John Newman – Blame

Posted by on September 5, 2014

I love Calvin Harris. Not in your college-aged sorority chick that listens to nothing but progressive house and goes to Coachella wearing an Indian headdress and flash tattoos way. I actually like him because I think his production is a cut above. Sure Hardwell is the number one DJ, but Harris has achieved cross over status. This new release from Harris though? It’s not getting the job done. The writing is great. The vocals are great. The drop is..uneventful. John Newman is brilliant as always, but Calvin really missed the boat on this one. This had the potential to become a mega-smash solidifying his summer reign. In the grand scheme of things, this review won’t hurt “Blame’s” performance one bit. We don’t intend it to. Regardless, we have to call it like we see it. Calvin Harris’ new “Blame” single out now on Sony (UK) is a dud of a track.

John Newman - Love Me Again (Shaun Frank Club Cover)
It might be a bit of a stretch to say we are seeing a second British invasion, but a new wave of British pop / soul singers is hitting the worldwide music scene with a vengeance, led by Sam Smith and John Newman and everyone is noticing. John Newman was first discovered by Rudimental and has burst onto the scene, notably with his single “Love Me Again”, which has seen countless remixes. In steps talented singer / producer Shaun Frank who creates a totally new and upbeat instrumental of his own designed for the clubs and covers the vocals in the same style as John Newman, but with Shaun’s own flavor. It is a freebee, so grab it below.

John Newman - Love Me Again

England is getting all the hits it feels like. This track from John Newman is gold, rarely what you get to hear in the US at this caliber anymore. I’m just not that into Bruno Mars and all the other mediocre pop artists, sure they can sing but where is their music like this? Wouldn’t surprise me if this gem made its way over to the US, it’s too good to go unnoticed. “Love Me Again” releases June 30th on iTunes Great Britain.

Kill Paris makes straight up baby making music. There is no way around it. He may be the Barry White of EDM — if Barry White was small, white and took slightly creepy pictures in sunflower fields, but I digress. Kill Paris’ combinination of funk, soul, grit and electro makes his sound ideal for what Rudimental brings to the table for what was one my favorite tracks in 2012 and one of the biggest dnb tracks of the year commercially. The remix keeps John Newman’s soulful vocals and lets Kill Paris work his magic, giving it the unique flavor of gritty undercurrents and playful piano motifs that create almost an entirely new track.
