Close your eyes and imagine… Warm air on your skin, soft sand between your toes, the sound of waves gently lapping up on the shore, and the most spectacular assortment of red, pink, orange and violet melting together in a firey, captivating sunset in front of you, framed by the silhouettes of swaying palm trees and hibiscus flowers. This is feeling that South African producer Nora En Pure invokes in her listeners with her melodic, serendipitous and yet surprisingly deep house tracks. A part of the Enormous Tunes and Helvetic Nerds labels alongside artists like EDX, Sons of Maria and Croatia Squad, you’d most likely recognize Nora En Pure for her hits such as “Come With Me,” “Saltwater,” and her most recent release,“Tell My Heart” featuring Dani Senior.

What captivates me about Nora’s music, however, is that from an immediate listen, you get a sense that her music truly goes much deeper than a solid beat and an uplifting melody; not something you find often in the popular music scene. Even more so, her aura is effortlessly cool and her success is unwavering regardless of the “female disadvantage” some attribute to the electronic industry. For these reasons, in addition to a sheer admiration for her jams, I was absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to pick Nora’s brain about her and her music in advance of her show at Effex in Albuquerque, New Mexico. For those seeking a getaway ~ be it on the dancefloor, a beach, or even lost in your headphones ~ I recommend purifying your life with Nora En Pure’s beats.

Electro-House | EDX & Leventina – The Tempest

EDX & Leventina - The Tempest

Two of Switzerland’s finest house exports (well Andrea from Leventina is Italian, but its ok) EDX & Leventina have come together again for an original, aptly titled “The Tempest”. The man behind most of Swiss dance music, either on the label side or actually writing it (see credits for EDX, Dinka, Helvetic Nerds, and his aliases), Chris Reece strikes again with this Leventina collab. With a sound familiar to their heavily supported “Blood Pressure” remix, the three of these Swiss DJs deliver on a track that does not fall into the trap of copying W&W or using a washed out hardstyle kick, but remains potent and relevant in the 2013 festival sound. The vocal samples only add to the frenzied pace of the track.

Progressive House | Chris Reece – Complicated

Living in the Texas of Canada, I naturally have a tendency to enjoy country music. I’m not really sure if country is big in texas but with all the cowboy hats and horses there I have to assume it is. You may also notice horses and a gentleman with a cowboy hat in the song art above so you should probably know what I’m alluding to. Part of the Helvetic Nerds, Chris Reece is a long established producer. It’s sort of his thing to fuse different genres, such as jazz and rock into the standard progressive house formula. In “Complicated”, his latest release, the style he has chosen to infuse is country. This song is likely not for everybody, especially if you hate cute little puppies and freedom, but this was the first song I have bought in a long time (though on a pre-paid visa my aunt got me for christmas, no way I’m using my own money) so I thought I should share. If you give it a try you might like it. If not, well then I only have one thing to say. If you think it’s a good idea for the storyline to involve a lengthy massage, it’s not.

Progressive House | Leventina & Dinka – Elements (2013 Reload)

Swiss producers Leventina & Dinka go back in the vault and dig up Dinka’s single “Elements” from her 2009 “Elements EP” and give it a makeover that makes it work in 2013. They make sure to keep the same smooth, progressive sound from the original with its outstanding arps and deft key play, but it is clear that Leventina was the one primarily orchestrating the 2013 update as you can hear their electro growls and punchy bass lines pervade throughout, while Dinka did some tinkering with the melody. Leventina continue to impress with every release and while fellow Helvetic Nerds comrades EDX & Dinka enjoy the brunt of the Swiss producer spotlight, it is only a matter of time before they get their fair share of it as well.
