Electro | Daft Punk – Drive (Unreleased from 1994)
Posted by Middy on September 20, 2011
I will let Soma Records do the talking. Get it HERE.
“At the tail end of 2010 we combed through boxes of DATs, pictures and god knows what else to find artefacts of Soma’s early days,” Chris Lamb (from Soma, Daft Punk’s first label) writes. “Imagine our surprise when we discovered a tape simply titled ‘Daft Drive’. We hooked up the DAT machine and inserted the tape with the utmost care, pressing play and praying that for one, the tape contained what we hoped, and two, that it didn’t savage it like a dog chewing on a bone.
In amongst the hiss and crackle, a monstrous 909 kick drum began to thud – Daft Punk’s Drive track had been rediscovered. Playing through was live Daft Punk: the freaky vocals, pounding Roland drums & synths and that distinctive DP compression. After standing in awed silence, witnessing this moment, the track faded off and we heard the sounds of French words that the recording had been made over; the remnants of their parents audio collection. The tape had originally been sent with Rollin’ and Scratchin’ to be released as Soma25 but Soma asked these two bright-eyed and techno-bound Frenchmen, to finish and send Da Funk instead and DRIVE was shelved for a later date. Until now.”

Electro | Madeon Remixes (16 Year Old Bringing FIRE) | Electro

I don’t know if its the hormones in our chicken and milk or what, but young guns seems to be relentlessly infiltrating the music scene. I thought Avicci, who emerged at the tender age of 19, was impressive, but now I’ve come across this 16 year old French kid who just kills it. His filthy Pendulum remix even graced the top spots of beatports charts a shortwhile ago. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on this one. Check him out on Facebook and Twitter. Shouts to Lewis for the find!

Even though his newest track is in a different language, I can still dig it.

Chromeo may be the only Arab/Jewish electrofunk duo on the planet. Let that mixture be a smooth metaphor for their unique sound, a blend of fancy synthesizers, a talk box, old computers, and older funk phrasings, torn from the days when the lords of the disco wore white suits and Jheri curls.
But even if Patrick “P Thug” Gemayel and David “Dave 1” Macklovitch, who met in high school in Montreal, unabashedly worship at the altar of Hall & Oates, they keep one ear to hip hop too, turning knobs on their drum machines the way they turn festivals into disco funk jamz.
But they’re not all hot nights and cool suits: until recently, Gemayel put his business school acumen to work as the band’s tour manager, and Macklovitch is earning his PhD in French literature from Columbia. Dissertation topic: “Theorizing the Pleasure of Reading in Eighteenth Century France.”
But right now, he’s all about the pleasure of getting down. In advance of their new album Business Casual, Motherboard visited the groove scientists at home in Montreal to sample their secret synth sauce, and see how it’s made. -VBS

Produced by David Guetta. Above, you’ll find a video that’s in subtitles (If you don’t speak French) of David premiering a rough cut/snippet of this song a few months ago. When I heard this song, it sounded extremely familiar. If you didn’t realize, David put out a song with Rico Love called “Extra Hard”. It was labeled as a demo. If you compare the two tracks, you’ll see that it’s the same beat but tweaked slightly. That’s the industry for you. Fresh New Tracks, a place where we do our homework even on game day. With that being said, shout out to all my people at SMU in Dallas. Go Mustangs!
