Drum & Bass, Dubstep, Moombahton | Noisia – Split the Atom (Special Edition)

Posted by on February 29, 2012

I don’t know where to even begin with Noisia’s latest massive album release. This is easily one of the biggest releases of the year by far with remixes from many of the big names across EDM. I had to take a few days to listen to each track multiple times to actually realize the quality of each and every remix. Starting from Kito’s highly anticipated Split The Atom remix which is amazing in so many aspects. To Kill The Noise’s vicious DnB remix of Diplodocus which even caught Deadmau5 off guard. This track got 80,000+ plays in 12 hours; that is extraordinary. One remix that I think isn’t receiving the respect is should is, Munchi’s Tommy’s Theme remix. Munchi takes this well orchestrated track from Noisia, and almost creates a new genre of music through this one remix. In a recent interview I saw Munchi talking about how he has been tampering with a new genre entitled Skull-step, but wasn’t ready to actually make a track in the genre yet. Well I would have to say if there was any track on this album that came close to sounding evil or skull like, it would have to be this one. How can anyone forget 16 bit’s remix that has been on everyones waiting list for over a year now. I don’t want to go through all the remixes and talk about how amazing and unique they are because that would take me all day. I recommend everyone listen through each track, because I am almost certain there is something in there to appeal to everyone.

House | Jacques Lu Cont

Posted by on February 19, 2012

The return of Stuart Price, the enigmatic British Producer/ Dj / Remixer has been noticed by quite a few in the EDM community. He is a man who has been producing under his own name as well as monikers such as Paper Faces, Les Rythmes Digitales and Jacques Lu Cont since the early 1990s. It was no accident that he opened for Swedish House Mafia at Madison Square Garden. He had a great set and is ready to make waves this year. His soundcloud currently only has three songs, though his discography is much more rigorous. “Church” has been heavily supported by Pete Tong among others and his remix of Miike Snow’s “Paddling Out” is expected to one of the highlights of the remix package. Jacques Lu Cont is already booked for Coachella, is playing with Axwell during Miami Music Week and plenty of other shows coming into what should be a busy festival season for the resurgent Jacques Lu Cont. He has a prototypical french house sound with upbeat french disco and some heavier electro coming from some obvious Daft Punk influences.

Dubstep, Electro, Review | Nick Thayer – Like Boom EP

Posted by on February 8, 2012

When OWSLA releases something new, you pay attention. Recent EPs from OWSLA-affiliated artists Kill the Noise and KOAN Sound have represented some of the most innovative efforts in EDM to date, and no one can deny the growing firepower behind young guns Zedd and Porter Robinson. So when Nick Thayer’s newest EP “Like Boom” dropped under the imprint yesterday, I knew that it would be worth a listen.

Nick Thayer is an Australian producer with a marked talent for weaving together elements of different genres — this latest EP mines hip-hop, dubstep, electro house, progressive house, moombahton and drum and bass to tremendous effect. While I had never heard of him before, I was immediately impressed by his versatility and obvious skill. Opening with some unexpected funked-out hip-hop (“Like Boom”), the EP veers quicky into heavy electro domain with “Facepalm,” which has a gritty, almost rock-inspired edge. “Totalitaria,” with its laser synths and more languorous tempo, is practically in moombahcore territory, while “What Props Ya Got” will ratchet up your heart rate with some truly frenetic DnB runs (before easing into a catchy, house-inflected hook). On the whole, “Like Boom” is an explosive and boundary-blurring listen which shows that Nick Thayer is less interested in the rules than he is in charting new territory.

Electro-House | Jennifer Lopez ft. Pitbull – Papi (Sidney Samson Remix)

Posted by on January 27, 2012

Sidney Samson has given out this remix of J Lo and Pitbull’s hit single “Papi” that is a change of pace from the very bleepy, dutch house he has been doing of late. While I cannot say I am the biggest Sidney Samson fan, one cannot deny his impact on the founding of Dutch House and impact on EDM in general, but this track shows his production skills with a heavy electro style that everyone will be able to enjoy.

Electro, Mashups | R3hab & Swanky Tunes – Sending My Love (Kaskade MixMash)

Posted by on January 10, 2012

Another day, another straight banger of a mashup from Kaskade. As usual, the build on this track is insane, and once the vocals drop the energy somehow gets ratcheted up to yet another level. Kaskade has been churning out so many of these lately that at this point I don’t even think of them as mashups in the traditional sense — they’re awesome enough in their own right to be distinct from the originals. Note: this is *not* the same Kaskade remix of Sending My Love that has already been posted…it combines three of the remixes, including Kaskade’s own. It’s a remix of the remixes if you will.

In other EDM news, Ultra announced this afternoon that it has sold out in record time. Tough luck if you didn’t get tickets but this news definitely fired me up, because it confirms what I already knew: Ultra’s going to be bigger and crazier than ever this year. Who’s going, who’s going to be holding down the front row at Skrillex with me (my friend got punched in the face by a crazy chick at the Mothership Tour so I’m ready to fight shenanigans with shenanigans if need be), and who’s got predictions for phase 2 of the lineup? Maybe a little late play from Deadmau5? Maybe Alesso or Diplo? Would love to see Rusko and Nero on there too.

At any rate, when you’re struggling hard on the Sunday morning of Ultra and aren’t sure if you can put in a third straight day, crank this up in your hotel room as a little reminder that you’re not trying to pass up Kaskade.

Progressive House, Videos | Addict DJs

Posted by on December 22, 2011

Such a refreshing surprise with these guys. Submissions is usually a morass of garbage (I mean really guys), it was so refreshing to here these two French DJs with some quality, uplifting progressive house. They have played big clubs all over the world including playing Miami Music Week, the biggest week in EDM. They use melodic synths, piano melodies, studders and cuts with a great control of the vocals in the songs as well as a good builds leading into euphoric, synth, piano laden drops with a strong steady bass throughout their songs to create that uplifting house feeling that has become so popular with some creativity that gives them a somewhat unique sound. Below are a few free tracks they have made including a great remix of the anthemic single from Dirty South and Thomas Gold “Alive” as well as a free remix they just released for Christmas and the New Year. Also I was given a full preview of their song that just released today that is a bomb and you can get on Beatport as well as their other songs and remixes. Also check them out on Soundcloud, Facebook and Twitter.
