Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | HIP-HOP | Curren$y’s “Return To The Winner’s Circle”

Posted by on January 2, 2011

I wanted to run through this entire mixtape before covering it on FNT. There aren’t any surprises here (unfortunately), just basically what you’d expect from a vet in the game with an album around the corner: solid production with the usual Curren$y chill rap flair. “Return To the Winner’s Circle” is a solid piece of work but I’m still waiting for Curren$y to create a “breakthrough” project – one that really accelerates his career from his current standing. Although he’s holding onto the music world with a strong grip with notable accolades that range from him being a former Young Money artist (you do still remember that song he did with Lil Wayne “Where Da Cash At” , right?), to his 150k+ fans on twitter, I still don’t consider him a huge force in the game. He’s armed with a unique sound and voice, which he utilizes well with smart lyrics, but he’s moving more laterally than he is vertically it seems. Lets put it this way, I’d be nervous to have him headline a show. Anyways, I’ve posted my favorite cuts below… Abridged version: To me this mixtape is more of a buzz maintainer than producer, something to hold us over until he drops his next album.

Curren$y (feat. Big K.R.I.T. & Killa Kyleon) – Moon & Stars (Remix)

Curren$y – Rain Delay

Curren$y – Role Model

Girl Fire, Hip-Hop | Nicki Minaj – Roman’s Revenge (Feat. Eminem)

As animated as her facial expressions are, she really missed out on a potentially lucrative mime career. On top of that, the beat was absolute garbage. It’s hard to watch someone like Swizz Beatz, who’s a real talent, fall off. Maybe I should give him the benefit of the doubt and say he’s “inconsistent”. I really hope this wasn’t one of those, “If you do a verse on my album I’ll do one on yours” kind of trade. I’m not trying to see a Nicki Minaj feature on Em’s album. Eminem must have had to been paid a large amount for this feature because it was painful to listen to.

Hip-Hop, Videos | Mic Control Interview w/ Aziz

MicControl catches up with Aziz as he begins his freshman year at Brandeis University. Aziz talks about balancing school, basketball and his growing rap career as well as his new video with his group the M.A.C. and his upcoming mixtape “Leave Me Az Iz”. Aziz has really been on my radar right recently. Check out Aziz’s new track that samples “Hotel California”. The track is produced by Mass Productions.

Hip-Hop | J. Cole – Hello Good Morning Freestyle

Posted by on July 3, 2010

While J. Cole was in London, he visited DJ Semtex (who’s the man) and freestyled over Diddy’s “Hello Good Morning”. Here’s how I see this Drake and J. Cole debate. J. Cole reminds me of Nas while Drake reminds me of Jay-Z. Drake will likely have the more illustrious career, but J. Cole will have the respect.

Albums | The Knocks

Based out of the Lower East Side of Manhattan, the Knocks are emerging as a force to be reckoned with as far as indie music production is concerned. Consisting of Ben “DJ B-Roc” Ruttner and James “JPatt” Patterson, the Knocks are named in reference to the early days of their production career when they worked out of a home studio as their complaining neighbors pounded on their walls and ceilings. Nowadays, you can find the duo killing it at the Heavy Roc Music studio in Chinatown. They’ve continued to make a name for themselves by finding and developing talent as well as remixing the likes of major artists including Ellie Goulding, Katy Perry, and Flo-rida (all of whom we’ve included below).

This is a highly remixed track, however, few artists can lay claim to the innovative sound that The Knocks produced with this one.

The track below is an impressively executed techno-ish remix of Katy Perry’s hit “I Kissed A Girl”.

Here’s their newest production.
