Events, Hip-Hop, Review | SXSW: GoldLink at Soulection’s “Sound of Tomorrow” Showcase

Posted by on March 27, 2014

On Saturday March 15th at precisely 2:50pm in sunny Austin, Texas the young and mysterious rapper by the name of GoldLink stepped upon the stage at Barcelona. A showcase aptly titled the “Sound of Tomorrow” had a bill filled with the futuristic sounding producers on Soulection’s roster. GoldLink was neither a part of Soulection’s imprint, nor was he a producer…so as I and the numerous other audience members asked ourselves what he was doing up on stage, he slowly began to gather himself and show us why.

GoldLink’s music is best described by Chuck Allen of Way Less Effort: “Of all the new sounds that have popped up in the industry, from the soul-sucking gothic southern grime that the UK and South Florida have been dropping, to the glo’d up trap of the Chi, this new “future bounce” sound really stands out. It doesn’t throw it all the way back to boom-bap like the “New New York” ish that Pro Era has been pushing, and it isn’t on that entirely digital production tip either. It mixes the buttery grooves of 90?s R&B with classic hip-hop breaks to give it an essence of nostalgia, and then turns on its head with bouncy, forward-thinking production from the likes of Kaytranada and Ta-ku. Add that to Goldlink’s roller coaster flow that fills every pocket of the dynamic instrumentals he tackles, and suddenly your head and shoulders are bobbing and you don’t know what happened.” *1

This future-bounce movement was prevalent all the way through his performance as he went worked through his short SoundCloud catalog, spitting out his semi-viral hits such at “Creep”, “Playah”, and at-the-time-unreleased song “Planet Paradise”. I was entranced by his energetic stage presence and ability to work a crowd whom was not at all expecting to be seeing a rapper on stage.

GoldLink has remained unseen by the internet world, but with his forthcoming mixtape, The God Complex set to drop in a matter of days, I can’t imagine his face avoiding the limelight for much longer. Enjoy, GoldLink’s newest release “Planet Paradise” produced by Louie Lastic, and be sure to prepare yourself for SXSW next year, since it’s never too early to start planning!

Electro-House, Melbourne Bounce | TJR ft. Benji Madden – Come Back Down

TJR featuring Benji Madden - Come Back Down

Melbourne bounce has hit the mainstream of dance music and you can put a lot of the blame or credit on TJR’s shoulders. It is obviously more nuanced than that, but as the sound continues to evolve, TJR’s tracks have been some of the most played in festival sets around the world for the past 12-18 months and it is from a weird, niche genre. His latest sure-fire hit single “Come Back Down” adds male vocals for a bit of a harder rock vibe to the bouncy, agressive bass line that comes with a TJR tune. Expect to hear a lot of this in Miami and beyond.

Electronic, Trap | The Chain Gang of 1974 – Sleepwalking (Goon Bags Remix)

Posted by on January 28, 2014

Goon Bags is a new artist on my Ipod, and a fantastic new addition. If you recognize this song from somewhere familiar, it’s because “Sleepwalking” by The Chain Gang of 1974 is the official trailer song of Grand Theft Auto 5 and can also be heard on the radio during the game. Goon Bags’ remix adds more of a trap aspect to the song that isn’t in the original. The remixed version features new drum work, bass lines, and some new synths to give it more bounce and a different energy. Overall, this track is worth a listen, and while you’re at it check out some of Goon Bags’ other tracks because they’ve got some real bangers out!

For those that are still unfamiliar with Jacuzzi, he’s a young budding producer out of Honolulu who’s been gaining momentum faster than a tsunami in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Recently he’s worked with Mr. Carmack, remixed Santigold’s ‘Disparate Youth’ and released an incredible EP of free original tunes. Jacuzzi’s penchant for arranging punchy staccato drum patterns and overlaying them with dark cinematic sounds has helped him create a signature style, garnering nods of approval from industry juggernauts like Bassnectar, Craze, Pretty Lights and more.

With his latest offering Jacuzzi puts his spin on Tinashe’s sultry R&B joint ‘Vulnerable’. The trap-ish drum progression, menacing strings and Japanese sounding woodwinds mingle quite nicely with Tinashe’s smokey voice in this late-night banger. In a world where everyone is waiting for a wild-ass drop, Jacuzzi shows restraint, keeps his cool and challenges you not to bounce along.

Electro, Trap | Carmack – Reputation

“My laptop was taken from me yesterday. this is the last song that was bounced off that thing. here it is for free” – Carmack. Unfortunate for the beat making master but luckily this bounce was saved because it slaps. Enjoy! Carmack delivering the goods as usual.

Exclusive, Progressive House | Krewella – We Are One (Sevag Area-201 Remix) [FNT Exclusive]

Krewella We Are One Sevag Remix FNTKrewella are no stranger to remixes, with their first worldwide smash single “Alive” seeing remixes and edits from just every corner of every genre. Their recent album “Get Wet” provides many more opportunities for over-remixing, however this sea of mediocrity allows certain gems from big and small names alike to stand out.

In steps New Jersey native and Mister East resident Sevag, who adds his own on one of the festival friendly selection from Krewella’s album “We Are One”. Sevag keeps festival friendly feel of the original, making sure to highlight Yasmine and Jahan’s vocals, but adds his own percussive flare to give it more bounce. Grab it for free below and check out his socials for more from him.

Australian producer Jahnne brings the funk with his remix of Alta’ “Stepping Out.” If you check out the original, it’s more of a downtempo record with some sexy retro vocals. The remix has a bounce to it, with a deep house layered with a funky guitar riff. Let this one build for a minute, once the track kicks in you’re going to feel it. I recommend this track strongly, this is a must listen and a must download! Enjoy your Saturday!
