Dubstep | Adventure Club – Retro City
Posted by Spice on August 1, 2012
I feel like Adventure Club epitomizes the happy medium between the underground and the accessible. Their tracks are pretty much crowd pleasers — put them on during a party and they’ll somehow manage to satisfy both the casual Avicii fans and the kids who went to see Excision instead of Eric Prydz at Identity Festival. Their latest release, “Retro City,” is in keeping with this — choppy synths, agile riffs, and a smooth drop that is restrained but has just enough edge. And then there’s the sudden tempo change midway through, which brings in some unexpected (but definitely welcome) moombah-ish funk. On the whole, this reminds me a lot of one of their earlier tracks, Do I See Color. While it’s certainly not the most exciting thing that the Montreal duo has put out, it’s definitely palatable and nicely put together.
Events, Review | Avicii @ TD Bank Garden 6/15/12

I will start with the good of this review because there is plenty of good and bad that went on with this show. The production was spectacular. It was simply amazing. He put himself in the ranks of Deadmau5, Amon Tobin, Pretty Lights, the Skrillex Mothership and Shpongle. The entire stage was covered in lights shining to every corner of the Arena, leaving no enlarged pupil untouched by streaming beams of colored light. The back display was filled with glittering visuals of various colors and images blending and dancing together in rhythm to the music with incredible visuals such as the first person view of riding a roller coaster. The head was a good addition to the visuals, but its real purpose is when it takes off during Third Party’s remix of “Otherside”. The top part separates from the rest of the head and moves over to the center of the crowd lowering itself there for about 15-20 minutes with tracks such as ‘In My Mind” and a bootleg of “Greyhound” and “Antidote”.
The tracks played by Avicii were the typical euphoric, uplifting sound you would expect from him, with some hard hitting electro sprinkled in for good measure. He went through his discography and featured the 8-9 minute version of “Levels” seen at Ultra, “Sweet Dreams”, “Silhouettes”, and his remix of “Hang With Me” among others, and offered up some other tracks such as Steve Angello, Sebastian Ingrosso and Alesso – Eclipse (Why Am I Doing This), Alesso’s remix of “Save the World” and others, while finishing off with “Kernkraft 400 (Stadium Chant)”. I walked in to his Summerburst ID, which is yet another ID from Avicii that is going to be ripped by millions worldwide. We all know his mixing skills, are average at best, but his ability to produce is among the very best and that is why he has become so popular.

Schoolboy is known for his big remixes as of late. Who can forget his Antidote remix which is still rinsed out by Knife Party almost every show, or his Why I Love You So remix. Even better was his EP “The Science Project”, which contained my favorite track by him till date, Paradigm. Now embarking on his latest and largest remix for Infected Mushroom’s track Nation of Wusses; he has gone and done it again. Smashing another monster creation of his that is sure to have him noticed, if people don’t know of him already. This first preview has to be one of my favorite remixes of the week. Teknian crushing this Fade Into Darkness remix for the Avicii remix competition, but deciding to not submit it through. Instead he is going to lay down some original vocals for release later on, which excites me even more for its release.
InfraRed is moving onto big things as far as there upcoming releases. Some of the stuff I have been hearing is sounding monstrous and out of this world as far as dubstep and drum & bass. This Wickman EP is sounding big so be sure to be on the lookout for a release date in the upcoming weeks. I love the old school heavy sounds in this track and how they are all mixed in so well together.

Mashups | DOSVEC – Charleston

Newest banger from DOSVEC, this time he decided to take a different turn with the vocals of this mashup. With the release of Avicii’s celebration of 2 million Facebook likes, DOSVEC blended it with Hardwell’s ‘Sapceman,’ delivering a dance floor blow. The vocals are the icing on this delicious cake, providing a party for even your friends not familiar with either of the instrumentals.
House | Avicii – Two Million (Original Mix)

I’m barely into my coffee and we’ve already got a new track from Avicii? Wow, well I can certainly think of worse ways to start the morning. Wasting no time after yesterday’s release (which Sev is already touting as his favorite Avicii song…ever), Sweden’s plaid-loving golden boy brings us the aptly titled “Two Million” to commemorate the significant milestone of hitting two million fans on Facebook. This is something different — it’s a stripped down, high energy house track with a darker edge than we’re used to seeing from Mr. Bergling. The deceptive simplicity, synthy pitch builds, and driving four-on-the-floor bassline give it a vaguely Afrojack-esque vibe that I’m totally feeling. Congratulations, Avicii! Here’s to the next two million.
Progressive House | Avicii vs. Lenny Kravitz – Superlove

There isn’t much introduction needed for this man. Avicii has just been smashing release, after release. This one has some of the best melodies and build ups of any recent Avicii and general release in my opinion. Lenny Kravitz puts the perfect addition of vocals to the melody and upbeat vibe. This track is sure to put you into a state of euphoria and good feeling. It looks like summer is here and in full force. Be sure to get it on Beatport HERE.
