2013 has been the year of Snake, turning up dance floors all over the world behind the turn tables, but also with his own productions, and what better way to end the year with an official release of his track with Lil Jon “Turn Down For What” under Columbia Records. Make sure you buy 4 or 5 copies for the holidays, one for your grandma, your girlfriend, your neighbor, and your little sister, and let them know Merry Christmas in style. Baby Jesus would approve, cop this single, save a ho, support twerking.

Progressive House | Tiësto – Red Lights

We are seeing a trend here with dance music stars. Now that the biggest and most important music market in the world has bought in to dance music, DJs want a piece of the very lucrative pop pie. This is convenient because pop music is going in the dance direction, notably since the inroads made by Guetta with his tracks in the late 2000s, but it also requires DJs to meet the pop scene half way.
Hits like “Alive”, “Clarity” and “Get Lucky” didn’t sound engineered for radio, but ended up there anyway, but recently tracks like Afrojack’s “The Spark”, Armin van Buuren’s “This Is What It Feels Like”, Ferry Corsten’s “Many Ways” and now “Red Lights” all demonstrate the move to try and appeal to much wider audience. DJs no longer want to be the anonymous guy in the corner spinning tracks, they want to be brands, superstars and with commercial, crossover appeal coming easier every day, you can expect that to become more and more the norm.
The song is incredibly catchy and destined for radio; undoubtably its original purpose. It is the first of three singles from Tiësto’s upcoming album signed to Universal set for release next year. It will be his first album since “Kaleidoscope” back in 2010, so expect something very different. You can get a sneak peak at the process behind it including his producers Matt Nash & Dave Silcox in the studio, and how tracks were chosen on the fifth episode of In The Booth.

Alternative, Hip-Hop | Aer – Spades, Clubs, & Diamonds

You don’t have to be Phil Helmuth to a fan of Aer’s newest single, “Spades, Clubs, & Diamonds”. Hell, you don’t even have to know how to play poker. This breezy new cut from the Boston duo strong on their come up is exactly what we expected; light, smooth, and blended with their signature sounds. David initiates the vocals, but Carter comes in soon after to deliver a very balanced piece of work. This track marks the second single off their forthcoming self-titled album due out 1/21/14. Grab this track for free when you pre-order the album, or purchase it solo on iTunes.

Hip-Hop | Deltron 3030 – City Rising From The Ashes

If you’re a hip-hop head you know about Deltron 3030, the futuristic world Del the Funkee Homosapien, Kid Koala and Dan the Automator created with funky new age beats, and ahead of its time bars: wrap it all up and you can call it classic. The trio was out working on their solo projects, though a sequel to the album was in the works, Event 2, which was released in September. Today, they release the video for “City Rising From The Ashes” off the album, a graffiti animated video. Check it!
Progressive House, Trance | Artificial – Prototype

Andrew Bayer, the maker of my favorite album of the year, “If It Were You, We’d Never Leave” has teamed up with fellow Anjunabeats members, Norin & Rad to form the duo Artificial. The US branch of the Anjunabeats family, the three of these producers have always looked to push the traditional boundaries of genre, and they continue that trend here. The track combines the upbeat complexity we see in Andrew Bayer’s clubbier selections, with the melodic abilities seen in Norin & Rad’s tunes. It is the perfect storm of their talents.

Progressive House | Avicii – All You Need Is Love (Maestro Harrell Remix)

Avicii’s “All You Need Is Love” didn’t make the final cut for his album and was only available as a Spotify bonus track. If I had to guess, the reason being for that is probably because, aside from the catchy melody that is in every Avicii song, it was extremely one-dimensional and clearly one of his earlier productions from before his style progressed into what majority of the album consisted of. Maestro Harrell, a DJ, producer, singer and actor from Chicago is the man who gave “All You Need Is Love” some substance and made it into a track worth multiple listens.
