Hip-Hop | Adult Swim Singles Program 2013: Run The Jewels (EL-P & Killer Mike) – 36″ Chain
Posted by Mach on June 10, 2013
Adult Swim has just kicked off their Summer Single Program for 2013. For those of you that don’t know about the program, Adult Swim throughout the year collects unreleased tracks from many artists, building a compilation that they release track by track. Today is day one of the series release, starting with a cool collaboration between El-P and Killer Mike, calling themselves Run The Jewels. The track is a future Hip-Hop style instrumental with El-P and Killer Mike gripping a tight flow over the abstraction in the beat. This is just the beginning of an incredible series, with upcoming tracks from Madlib & Freddie Gibbs, Mac DeMarco, Lil B, and even a collaboration between legendary MF DOOM & Captain Murphy (aka. Flying Lotus). No doubt this will end up being one of the most talked about compilations of the Summer. Adult Swim is not allowing a player but if you click the link below you can listen to the single on their website.

Progressive House | Kaskade – Atmosphere
Posted by Middy on June 10, 2013
The lead single from his September artist album, “Atmosphere”, Kaskade takes us behind the curtain of what he has been doing on his elongated tour break over the winter / spring. This is not the deep house Kaskade of old that came to play on the “Its You, Its Me Redux Tour“, but rather the man ready for 2013 — with emotive, big room tracks prepped for the largest of venues. The vocals coupled with the slow and addictive melody make this something that you will be playing all week as you hum along “Of all the waves in your atmosphere”. To celebrate his album he will be going on an Atmosphere Tour, described as “Big Rooms, Small Tour”, later in the fall. Tickets are still on sale for the 4 cities, so if you have not gotten a ticket (I have), get on that now.
Progressive House | Cedric Gervais & Howard Jones – Things Can Only Get Better
Posted by Middy on June 3, 2013
Cedric Gervais, the man responsible for the single “Molly“, which spawned the infernal breed of related clothing, and his chart topping remix of Lana Del Rey‘s “Summertime Sadness“, has taken Howard Jones‘ 1985 hit singe “Things Can Only Get Better” and brought it up to speed to this era of dance music with a 2013 big room update. In all serious the molly clothing is the worst. You look like someone who thinks they are going to see Levels or dubstep perform on the mainstage and you are just asking for a cavity search from security. Not sure Cedric Gervais knew that is what he was going to create, but he did I put some of the blame on him for it.
Cedric Gervais flips the instrumental of the original, keeping the soulful vocals from Howard Jones and adds his own big room sound. Playing off of the addictive vocals, Gervais adds a melody that will not wow with complexity, but is just what the doctor ordered for this track, while adding well-timed electro growls and a pulsing bass line. To spice things up, I tossed in a very solid remix of the track from rising dance music producer, Landis, whose track with Henry Fong “Get Down” has been in heavy rotation for many big DJs

FYI, Pop | Justin Timberlake – I’m Ready
Posted by J_Salzer on January 10, 2013
Before everyone gets too excited, I’m obligated to tell all of you that this is not an actual song. The song will come at some point in the next 5 days, and expect it to be on FNT within 7 seconds of its release. This brief video is a small look into Justin Timberlake’s musical mind. This dude has been crazy busy, juggling acting, music, and reviving washed up social media websites. Good to hear how much of perfectionist he is, which gives me hope that his album(rumored to be produced by Timberland), will be nothing less than the best. Check out the black and white minute video above and be on the lookout for a J-Tim drop on SUNDAY.
Also, for the sake of news, Destiny’s Child also announced that they will be releasing a new song to add to their career compilation, “Love Songs.” The track will be produced by Virginia native Pharrell and will feature the last 3 members of DC, the trio of Beyoncé, Michelle Williams and Kelly Rowland. Looks like 2013 is the year of the comeback. Be on the lookout for that release on January 29th.

10. Alesso vs OneRepublic – If I Lose Myself (Alesso Remix)
Alesso’s seminal work this year, his remix for OneRepublic has gone global and then some. Ryan Tedder’s vocals are highly sought after, and meshed with Alesso’s ability to create melodies, the result was magical.
9. Duke Dumont ft. A*M*E* – Need U 100%
The Grammy nominated Duke Dumont had an amazing year with the release of this timeless deep house record. Straight from the UK, it doesn’t seem that Mr. Dumont will be stopping anytime soon with his latest release “I Got You.” Also shout out to Dave Edwards who gave “Need U” a second wind with his fun remix of the track.
8. Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike & Moguai – Mammoth
Possibly the most played and popular big room / progressive track of the first 6 months of the year, Moguai’s collab with Dimitri Vegas & LIke Mike showed that complex melodies can be popular when amelodic festival drops were more and more common. It was played by everyone from your standards like Hardwell and Tiësto to guys like Ferry Corsten and Cosmic Gate.
7. Lana Del Rey – Summertime Sadness (Cedric Gervais)
The original became very popular on its own, but Cedric Gervais’ rendition not only elevated his own career, but took this track to new heights across the dance and general music landscapes. It became a hit across radio stations and landed him a grammy nomination, something that matters this year now that there aren’t any scheming Rothscilds in the mix.
6. Breach – Jack
Iwantyourbodyeverybodywantsyourbodysoletsjack, let’s jack. Those vocals became inescapable this year from a more expected DJ set like Duke Dumont, to someone more surprising in Avicii, this tune was everywhere. Ben Westbreach’s single catapulted his career to the next level and became the marquee signing for Claude von Stroke’s Dirtybird Recordings. Creative genius Riff Raff directed the video. Enough said.
5. Fatboy Slim & Riva Starr ft. Beardyman – Eat Sleep Rave Repeat (Incl. Calvin Harris Remix)
It started a movement. “Eat Sleep Rave Repeat” became the Motto of dance music in 2013. Born from a wacked out man in Brooklyn, this has been Fatboy Slim’s return to production prominence. The Calvin Harris remix brought it to festivals everywhere with its powerful acid bassline.
4. Disclosure ft. AlunaGeorge – White Noise
Deep house went mainstream in 2013 and the main drivers of this trend were the super young British brothers, Guy & Howard Lawrence. The most blogged about artists of the first half of the year, edging out even the French robots, Disclosure had nearly unrivaled hype of any artist in any genre. “Settle” was one of the triumphs in dance music this year, but “White Noise” stood out as the biggest this year, though really every one of them deserves a spot on here.
3. Martin Garrix – Animals
You could not escape “Animals” this year a festival for better or worse. There are tracks that change the direction of dance music and this was one of them. That “Martin Garrix” sound become copied, imitated and generally abused by producers professional and amateur alike once they saw the popularity of “Animals”.
2. Avicii ft. Aloe Blacc – Wake Me Up
The flagship single from Avicii’s debut album “True”, Avicii’s “Wake Me Up” has become the symbol for his year of breaking boundaries, starting at Ultra and then with his album “True”. It has sold millions of copies around the world and has remained one of the most popular tracks, of any genre, throughout the whole year.
1. Daft Punk ft. Pharrell Williams – Get Lucky
“Animals” may have been the ubiquitous festival favorite this year, but dance music has gone far beyond the festival and club stage in the past few years. The hipster backlash against RAM was palpable, but the mastery and creative genius at work not only with Pharrell and Nile Rogers on “Get Lucky”, but throughout the whole album showed the robots were still the most innovative duo in dance. “Get Lucky” immediately found its way to every radio station, wedding, and DJ set, as a favorite of everyone from kids to grandparents. It is arguably not just the dance song of the year, but the song of the year, as denoted by its grammy nomination in the same category.

20. Audien – Wayfarer
Released in January, “Wayfarer” stayed in the Beatport trance top 100 until December. Beatport sales are not always the best indication of a song’s success, but in this case, it can be used to prove just how successful this song was having been used in the sets of Knife Party, Hardwell, Armin van Buuren, Cosmic Gate and so many more for the majority of the year.
19. Just Blaze vs Baauer ft. Jay Z – Higher
Baauer got famous, because the internet, for the spazed out version of the Harlem Shake, but while that was happening, he was making this heater with hip hop producer mainstay Just Blaze, with a few contributing lyrics from a guy who is used to being in the spotlight, Jay Z.
18. Diplo & GTA – Boy Oh Boy
Generally artists save their best releases for big label tracks, but here Diplo & GTA, perhaps unwittingly, delivered what was their most popular track of the year. It is simplistic, but outstanding, taking Missy Elliot’s lyrics from “Lose Control” and meshing them in perfectly. This vine embodies the attitude in this song.
17. Armin van Buuren ft. Trevor Guthrie This Is What It Feels Like (Original + Remixes)
Armin’s crossover single, “This Is It What it Feels Like” became not only a hit with dance music fans (though he took flak from the traditional trancers), but also saw major radio play across the US and the world. The track seemed to only become more popular as the year wore on. The W&W remix brought this track to the festival stage.
16. Mark Knight – Your Love
Quietly, Mark Knight went about his business leading one of the finest dance music labels in the world, Toolroom Knights and had himself a smashing year production-wise. “Your Love” brings together an intoxicating groove with an addictive vocal that as it says “I just can’t get you out of my head”. Nobody has been able to get “Your Love” out of their heads either.
15. W&W & Ummet Ozcan – The Code
You cannot underestimate the impact W&W have had on 2013. The imitators have come from everywhere and their sound has become another overdone aspect of festival house. Ummet Ozcan has followed in their footsteps, moving from trance to a electro-trance sound that has become more and more popular lately, culminating in “Revolution”. “The Code” was the track that really exploded from them this year, taking over WMC and lasted all the way until NYE.
14. TJR – Whats Up Suckaz
Another sub genre getting love, Melbourne Bounce has gone global with its ambassadors Will Sparks and its bald American friend, TJR. “What’s Up Suckaz” brings the bounce to DJ sets all across the world in a way that is palatable to all fans.
13. Sander van Doorn & Mark Knight vs Underworld – Ten
“Your Love” was an individual triumph for Mark Knight, but he found a way to top that with his collab alongside Sander van Doorn and Underworld. Underworld’s floats across the upbeat house grooves and melodies that show the strength of each dynamic producer.
12. Pryda – Power Drive
For what has been another incredible year for the melodic master, “Power Drive” brought out a tougher side of him that we normally see with Cirez D. Power Drive thumps like a 350 foot drive from a sex addicted Tiger Woods and has the grace of Michelle Kwan. Pryda does it best, and he proves that once again.
11. Nicky Romero & Sunnery James & Ryan Marciano ft Fast Eddie – S.O.T.U.
One of the tracks that has appealed to all crowds this year, S.O.T.U. has been played by DJs of all genres on all stages. With an impossibly punchy kick, the simple yet potent track shows the power when percussion is used right. Nicky Romero has taken a wide variety of styles this year from “Symphonica” to “Still The Same Man” to this, but “S.O.T.U.” has to be his crowning achievement this year.
