Progressive House | Marcus Schossow – Reverie
Posted by Middy on July 12, 2013
It was only a matter of time before Marcus Shossow got his due. He has been on the cusp for quite some time now with several successful releases on his own Tone Diary label, but in 2013 he saw his breakthrough with “Liceu” on Steve Angello’s Size Records and “Reverie” got him signed to the Axtone family. The track is built around a long, dreamy build that defies the normal 2-2 dance music composition with a dark, brooding, powerful and complex drop, combining searing guitars and impossibly punchy bass with well timed growls. This track has all the makings to be one of the best Axtone releases of the year and possibly stand as one of the best big room tracks in 2013. Look for a Michael Calfan remix later in the summer.

Progressive House | Lana Del Rey – Young & Beautiful (Moiez Remix)
Posted by Middy on July 10, 2013
It has been a little while since I have posted something from the Vancouver native, Moiez, but he has had a great 2013 making his way to the MainStage at Spring Awakening in Chicago earlier this summer, alongside names like the Bingo Players, Dirty South, Nero and Moby. Lana Del Rey has become the Adele of dance music remixes and it leads to some pretty egregious over-remixing, but do give this one a shot with its quick moving key play and a crisp bass line. In the future look for more remixes coming soon from Moiez and an official remix package for “Young and Beautiful” that includes one from Kaskade.

Progressive House | Arias – Solar
Posted by Middy on June 25, 2013
With productions like Andromeda, Majoris & Pegasus under his belt in 2013, the underrated, resurgant Parisian, Arias returns with another celestially themed track on his newly launched label Olympia Records. With a relentless, churning low end, pulsing synth chords, a fast paced arp and a pitched top line, “Solar” comes together with heart racing builds and drops, weaving together the many elements of the track into one seamless piece of music. He may not get all the hype and attention, but his productions are top of the line. We are excited to see what the future brings for this producer who has a keen ear for forward thinking dance music.

Electro-House | Martin Garrix – Animals
Posted by Middy on June 18, 2013
With his BFAM, Julian Jordan making his way to New York this Saturday, Martin Garrix provides us with his long awaited festival hit. The saga behind the song has helped its fame to this point. It was first IDed by Spinnin Records as Hardwell & GTA track, possibly to get the hype going. Then from there it was IDed as a Sidney Samson & Martin Garrix song, and though it is now just Martin Garrix’s single, one cannot rule out the possibility of Samson providing a little guidance since he has acted a mentor to him.
“Animals” embraces the minimal drops being championed by all ranges of producers in 2013, in part as a quick fix for staying relevant in the festival season, and another because there seems to be an insatiable appetite for it by the fans. With a more innovative style than most coming out today, “Animals” relies on a quick succession of pitched percussion, and a big room build to bring the track together. Look for this to be played often this summer and watch for it on Hardwell’s Revealed Recordings Compilation, releasing this Friday, June 21st.

Drum & Bass, FYI | Noisia & Foreign Beggars Join To Create, I Am Legion
Posted by Mach on June 15, 2013
One of Drum & Bass’s legendary groups, Noisia, and Grime trio, Foreign Beggars, announced their new epic collaboration project, I Am Legion. It is no surprise that the two groups decided to work together like this. They have done many great tracks together in the past including “Shellshock” and a favorite of mine, “Contact”. Just the other day I Am Legion unleashed a preview on BBC Radio 1 of their filthy new track, “Make Those Moves”. The dominant bass behemoth pounds into your ears taking no prisoners. I Am Legion may end up being one the best things to happen to Drum & Bass, Neuro-funk, and Dubstep in 2013. Keep an eye out for more killer I Am Legion tracks.
Electronic, House | Disclosure – Settle (Album Review)
Posted by Spice on June 12, 2013
These days, it’s hard to do much of anything on the internet without encountering heaps of reverential praise for the British brother-duo better known as Disclosure. They’ve become the de facto poster children for what’s cool in 2013 and have amassed a following that includes both hipster indie pop enthusiasts and their ravier twenty-something counterparts. Back in March, I remember perusing the calendar at one of my favorite clubs and noticing that they had sold out that upcoming Friday — the first Friday of the second weekend of Ultra, as it were. Not only did this not register with me at the time, but I didn’t even bother to catch them in Miami. Quelle folie. I am usually slow to warm up to bandwagon-y new groups, probably due to the fact that I am effectively a huge music snob in denial, but sometimes the hype becomes too great to overlook and bandwagons get harder and harder to ignore. In the case of Disclosure (and their now very considerable bandwagon), I can confirm that all the hype is utterly justified.
Electronic | Rustie – Slasherr (Flume Edit)
Posted by Spice on June 10, 2013
Tasty little free tidbit from Flume, a man to keep an eye on in the remaining weeks and months of 2013. This edit of Rustie’s “Slasherr” hits exactly the right chord — it takes all the fizz and energy of the original and gives it a funky, chilled out vibe. Somehow, the final product manages to seem even fresher and more innovative than its progenitor.
