Ianick is a 20 year old producer from Norway and this is his big debut on FNT. He has been relatively quiet in terms of releases for quite some time now but he has made up for it with a slew of new tunes today. He is primarily a progressive house producer, but the two tracks that stood out to me were of the slower, atmospheric progressive type. “Run Out of Steam” is the extra that didn’t make it onto his Nostalgia EP and is free for you to enjoy. It is the more easy going track of the two I’ve chosen and was a nice surprise to come across. I had only heard of his commercial stuff before this, and it was good, but after listening to this it shows that he is capable of producing outside of that comfort zone.

“Color World” is actually a cut off his EP and therefore is not free. Sorry. I gave the EP a listen and this is my favorite song off of it so I figured it was worth sharing anyway. It is more upbeat and fun than the previous track, providing a nice contrast between two well executed styles.

Indie | Valente – The Distant Lights (Anoraak Remix)

the distant lights remixes ep

Backwards snapbacks, so unique. As is the moment in time where a song keeps me coming back for more. I rarely download songs anymore because, like a girl whose profile pic is of her shoulders and above, you just can’t be sure. Right, the song is good. Is it great? No, anybody in a tube top is great. Being in the presence of a homeless man eating a bowl of Rice Krispies is great. Watching my buddy and his gf make brownies and then ask me to leave so they can do other stuff is great. Anoraak’s remix of Valente’s “Distant Lights” is also great. It has maken the cut of the very few songs I download a week so I think it’s something worth listening to.

Soft, gentle vocals and a soothing instrumental is what this track consists of. That is really all that needs to be said.

Albums, Indie, Review | Bend – Riverfriend

Posted by on July 10, 2013

Yesterday, the indie synth-pop duo group Bend released their album, Riverfriend. The album is a dynamic range of electronic and natural sounds, each track contrasting the previous. There’s a perfect song for everyone on here. If you like Vampire Weekend, try “I’m Taking Care of Him.” Imogen Heap fan? Give “Riverfriend I” a go. Or maybe you’re a Motown, barbershop quartet kinda guy, in which case “Everyone” is all you. Don’t mind me though; I’ll be over in the corner dancing along to “No Space.”

This album makes great use of silence and minimalism (something we tend to forget about in the EDM world), showcasing the quirky vocals of Bend’s Sean Eads. As it turns out, Eads’ voice is the metaphorical commentary of Jacky Bryan. What is this Jacky Bryan you speak of, other than the 3rd track on the album, you may be asking? Well…

The album is an eclectic commentary on the ubiquitous feeling of not belonging, as told from the perspective of a mysterious space alien named Jacky Bryan.

You’ll find after giving the album a listen, you might be surprised by how much you connect with both the lyrics and the hardships of an extraterrestrial being. Maybe life on other planets isn’t such a distant concept. So, I’ll just leave that there, along with this video for “I’m Taking Care of Him,” a perfect visual pairing for the single. Enjoy!

Electronic, Indie | Portugal. The Man – Purple Yellow Red & Blue (Passion Pit Remix)

Posted by on July 8, 2013

“Purple Yellow Red & Blue” has easily been one of my most played songs so far this summer. I actually enjoyed all of Portugal. The Man’s latest album, Evil Friends, which was produced by Danger Mouse. This remix by Passion Pit, though, turns the indie rock track into a groovy nu disco ballad, giving it even more colors than it started it out with. For fans of the original, you may be a little turned off by what Passion Pit did here with the chorus but give it a chance and just dance. Also, if you haven’t seen the official music video, stop whatever you’re doing, make sure there’s no one around you, and watch it here.

Chill, Compilation, Indie | Teen Daze – Lost Songs (30 track compilation)

I am well aware that progressive house has become generic, overplayed, mainstream, and incredibly formulaic (also stupid and fat), but I still love it. With that said, I also really enjoy slower, chill sounds. Songs that you can play while knitting a sweater for your grandmother or even just while you stand at the stove stirring that damn macaroni and cheese for 8 minutes. Songs like these are very different from house. They also aren’t as mass produced and oversaturated as house is. It is for these reasons that I was very pleased to find Fraser Valley native, Teen Daze giving away 30 of his unfinished, or “lost” songs for free. I have listened to all 30 and, for the most part, they’re all great. I will say though, I’d go with “Lost Songs 3” as my favorite compilation. The download links to the three compilations are below as well as arguably the top songs from each respective pack on Soundcloud, just to give you a taste. If the redundancy of whatever your preferred genre provides has got you looking for a breath of fresh air then this is it.

Indie, Progressive House | Smallpools – Dreaming (The Chainsmokers Remix)

The Chainsmokers are back with another remix. Surprisingly, I wasn’t that big a fan of their previous remix but I really enjoy this one. It seems they have carved out their own sub genre of progressive house mixed with indie and they do it well. For their latest project they took to remixing Smallpools’ “Dreaming” and they’ve done so in their typical fashion. This may be one of my favorites of theirs.
