Cover, Pop | CJ Holland Covers Jason Derulo’s “Want To Want Me”

Posted by on March 19, 2015

CJ Holland is back with his latest cover as part of his new #CJWEEKLY series, and it’s the most fully articulated display of his sound and aesthetic that we’ve gotten thus far, for sure. While the cover game isn’t kind to many, and has lost some of its charm as a whole due to congestion in the form, CJ has found a way to extend his releases beyond karaoke; his influences and style here are clearly in effect, and One Love’s original production, too, adds a new flavor to the track is a definite help to his cause.

Derulo’s “Want To Want Me” was last week’s most added song to radio, so here’s where song choice comes into effect. His last cover was of “Tuesday,” a song that really was on its way out of radio, so while his unique approach to it still made it compelling, it wasn’t able to capitalize on the song’s catchiness since the melody’s interest had all but faded. Here, though, CJ makes his mark on a song that he knew was bound to be successful, and yet hasn’t already been engrained in its listeners in a particular way. Cover artists take notice.

Cover, Pop, Videos | CJ Holland — Tuesday [Cover]

CJ Holland, a 21-year-old with a voice like silk and a classy style, is a name to know if you pride yourself on staying ahead of the blog curve. He’s clearly developed himself in the vein of pop darlings like JT and Bruno, and has been working on his debut album with the likes of Pharrell, Ne-Yo, and even Quincy Jones.

Recently, he’s performed a series of covers (“Uptown Funk, “I’m Not the Only One,” and “Thinking Out Loud”) that have continued to impress and showcase his range. This week he’s added a bit more of an inventive touch to his cover of “Tuesday,” as producer One Love (of Kinetics & One Love fame, primarily) provides an immersive, trap-infused interpolation of the beat, and CJ rewrites the verses, making them successfully his own while still retaining the original’s staccato flow and melodic touch.

This tune is pure artwork. It combines elements of film score and futuristic glitches – it has no set tempo. The fellas over at PINEO & LOEB have flipped a delicious cover of the original ‘Y.O.L.O.’ by the Strokes and this is addictive. Plug in some headphones for this one-way ticket into space and strap on a seatbelt, because some turns are just unpredictable.

If you’ve been looking for some stunning vocals, you’ve come to the right post. Echos’ Remix of “Stay With Me” by Sam Smith is absolutely enchanting. Gentle, yet pricise vocals guide the poppy synths and soft beats along. The lyrics to this track are emotional, in the original and this cover version. Echos really took the vocals and made them sound unique. Overall the vibe is soft and has a dreamy atmosphere. Lucky for us, you can grab it for free!

Cal and Rez may not always outdo the original artist’s work on any given Timeflies Tuesday episode, but their ability to cover and remix such a diverse blend of genre’s is unsurpassed by few.  This week they rolled through yet another viral hit, “Rather Be” from Clean Bandit x Jess Glynne’s.  Rock on and grab tickets to see these Timeflies live this fall/winter!

Cover | A$AP Rocky – F*ckin’ Problem (Xavier Dunn Cover)

Xavier
We’re betting you’ve never heard of Xavier Dunn, because before this, neither had we. I’d call this a cover, but it’s more of a reimagining than a standard cover. Australian based artist Xavier Dunn takes A$AP’s huge 2013 hit and turns it into an elegant rendition that even A$AP would respect.
