Albums, Hip-Hop, Pop | Timeflies Just Brought Grubeats Out of Retirement.

Posted by on March 29, 2018

It’s been a cool ~5 years since I published my last blog and faded off into corporate America. I’m dusty, washed up, real-world slummin’, counting one more grey every time I have my hair cut. It’s a different grind than working my shitty hotel job then cranking out 15 blogs at night back in 2010. Do I wish I could go relive the college life once more? You’re damn right I do. Twice even. Since I now have a cubicle to occupy, I’ve come to the realization that this is no longer a reality. “So Grubeats, why are you back,” you say? I’m back because our day 1 guys Cal and Rez dropped a heater and sent me on a trip back to my younger years.

Our good friend’s Timeflies’ new EP, ‘To Dream’, hit digital outlets last Friday, chalk full of all the feels. Like I said, they took me on a journey. Fast forward to the closing track, “Be Easy”, which is backed by a elementary chorus (which is catchy as hell), pumped with that nostalgia I so desperately need. Those who have been following Timeflies’ from the jump know their story. They came up in an era where the blog game was booming. The Stupay brother’s were the blog game Jordan Belfort and Donnie Azoff – fortunately they did it clean and never ended up under seize by the SEC and FBI. It was a different ballgame back then. Blogging was the meat and cheese sandwiched between Limewire and Spotify. The good ol’ days. Cal and Res capitalized on their unique opportunity and are still here killing it 8+ years later, and for that, I salute them.  Head on over to Timefliesmusic.com, cop/stream their new album and catch them on tour now!  …and shout out for the HOF FNT line in verse 2.

    [Verse 2]
I remember taking laps through the quad
Natty in the back of the Jeep with the squad
All the girls laying on our lawn while we’re playing our song
Looking at us like ‘oh my God’
Thinking man if we could just do that
If we could we get a song up on fresh new tracks
If Waldo doesn’t call the cops
    If 101 had blocks
If hotongue didn’t get so packed
But Jerry and our peep we were hungry
And ever since they heard me free people love me
64 buzz deep on them rizzer beats
In the back seat of the town and country
No time for stress, I’m blessed, I confess
I’m pressed tryna turn all their no’s into yes
I’m obsessed with being the best
    Ain’t no time for rest
I’ma turn lights checkmate into cash cheques

    Signing off until 2023, Grubeats.

Albums, Hip-Hop, Rap | Atlanta Native, Kelechi, Drops Debut Album “Before The Quarter”

Posted by on May 27, 2016

Sometimes you hear an artist and are 7-seconds into the first song, you’re on to the next. Sometimes you hear an artist for the first time and are instantly drawn in. Whether it be the beat, their flow, the lyrics or the message, sometimes you just get that feeling you found something special. A few years back I stumbled across STNDRD, a hip-hop duo out of Hotlanta. Kelechi & Phay, two very talented artists were the talent behind the label. They were clearly motivated (as I quickly confirmed after seeing and hearing “We Want It All“). They were cultured and proud of their diverse backgrounds. They were confident, fun, and full of energy. Most importantly, they could RAP.

Fast forward 2 1/2 years, both artists are still representing STNDRD, but pursuing parallel solo careers. Kelechi was the recipient of $50k after being recognized as the winner of Green Label Sound’s “Open Call” contest. Identified as one of the next talents on the brink of explosion, Kelechief invested that nickel lump right back into his debut album, Before The Quarter. Making valuable industry connections and cosigns along the way, Kelechi has been earning his key and building bridges along the way. “Before the Quarter” is Kelechi’s breakout. 10 tracks, from raw to delicate, Chief flexes appropriately, but never lacks a message. Enjoy the album stream and cop your own copy on iTunes if those first 7-seconds hit you like they hit me.

Hip-Hop | New Name, New Music from Sylvan LaCue (Formerly QuESt)

Posted by on November 12, 2015

Searching For Sylvan, but were his dreams truly coming true or was he becoming just another victim of the rap game?

    Returning this week with his first single, “The Watcher 3” – a follow up to Jay-Z’s “The Watcher 2” – after a full year hiatus, Cue shows no signs of needing a tune-up. He’s back and he’s motivated more than ever. Featuring production from Sylvan’s in house production team, Linzi Jai & Wishlade, The Marvels fire off a beat that sounds like something JP from Grandma’s Boy might have cooked up. FIRE. Wasting no time calling it how he sees it, Sylvan opens the record with a powerful statement;

Game f*cked up, game f*cked up
What should I do for a living n*gga?
What should I eat for a living n*gga?
    That’s how I live for a living n*gga

Well, in case you’re still wondering how the music industry works for many up and coming hip-hop artists, listen closely and you’ll have a pretty clear idea. Fortunately for us, Cue has his head balanced and is not going to fall into a one-and-done industry trap that eats so many artists alive. Far From Familiar coming soon, Wise Up.

Pop | Timeflies Drop ‘Just For Fun’ Album

Posted by on September 24, 2015

Fresh off the release of their major label LP, Just For Fun, Timeflies have some fun on a private jet and remix their lead single, “Worst Things Than Love”. Deservingly so, Cal and Rez pop bottles while they travel from city to city on their fall tour. I mean, how can you blame the guys when they debuted with a top 10 album and remain in the top 30 on iTunes? Packed with hits, jams, and mellowed out vibe tunes, the fellas collect features from pop stars Natalie La Rose & X-Factor Star, Carly Rose Sonenclar but it’s really the in house talent that shines on this project.
