Last week, Deadmau5 quit Twitter and released a sampler of tracks he had been working on. My first question when the records came out was, is this the return of the Mau5? (As if he ever left…) Mach was quick to tell me to wait and see before jumping to conclusion, but I fell on this remix by Levi of “Drop The Poptart” and honestly it’s excellent. A strong electro-progressive-house bootleg remix that’s going to take you to the stars. I suggest you listen to this as loud as possible in your headphones, or on your speakers. This piano is cosmic, and the whole flow of this track is a journey. This is a must listen!

Bass | Chase & Status – International (Skrillex Remix)

This is why we wait patiently when artists don’t release songs as often as we would like, or as often as they used to. Everyone wants a piece of the Skrillmeister (be it for positive or negative reasons) and he has his hands on a million different projects at once. In interviews, Moore has stated that he does not release material unless he is completely satisfied with the result, often citing difficulties deciding how to put together albums or EPs. I respect that mentality. Obviously he decided that this remix was ready to rock, and I would have to fully agree. I like a lot of the projects that Skrillex has contributed toward, and this remix is no exception. It is included on the new Chase & Status album, and feels right at home in that collection. This tune is well-crafted and really is an excellent remix of the original.  It shakes the walls, and I love it.

Progressive House | Paramore – Still Into You (Topher Jones fREeMIX)

Guys, you know how sometimes things go terribly wrong and you end up having to wipe the back of the toilet and/or think about changing your pants but it was clear af like it always is cause you mostly drink water so you don’t have to? Well guess what happened to me a couple minutes ago… I remembered how my gym teacher in the tenth grade said that she liked my hair and I just now realized that she was flirting with me. I’m sure that it’s not even a question as to whether or not she is still into me because I mean why wouldn’t she be. Chicago native Topher Jones is clearly still into Paramore’s “Still Into You”, seeing as how he remixed it a couple days ago and is giving it away for free. Honestly, the production quality of this track isn’t very high. The melody is catchy though and the drop is nice (and obviously the vocals are too), so it makes the cut. Cut is the better option and so is chewing gum loudly with your mouth open right next to me.

Trance | Estiva – Stratos

Posted by on September 21, 2013

EstivaGenerally, established producers don’t just drop tracks for free out of the blue. They wait for some social media milestone or a holiday to say thanks to the fans. With “Stratos”, Dutch trance producer, Estiva didn’t feel the need to wait for some moment to celebrate, but rather decided to gift his fans now with a free track. The quality is just as high as any of his other tracks, and with “Dinodrums” still rocking sets and the Beatport charts, it is great to see this from Estiva.

This has certainly been a breakout year for LA based producer Paris Blohm and after a few months wait, he is now back with another free original. Instead of taking the darker, hard hitting route that most of his songs tend to go, he has chosen to show his more harmonic and cheerful style in a rather short but fun instrumental. Like his most popular song “Presence”, this too is dedicated to his lost sister Chloe.

Hip-Hop, Rap | San Williams – #drugs

Posted by on September 14, 2013

A few days ago, I was perusing SoundCloud when I stumbled upon a rapper by the name of San Williams. Going in to the song with skepticism, (as I do with all random SoundCloud songs), I was instantly caught off-guard by San Williams distinct sound. A dark and raspy voice, the emcee has some bottled up emotion that spills on to each of his tracks. One in particular, “#drugs”, tells the tail of Williams quarrels with the drug game and his past experiences, speaking often times with a very pejorative tone towards the drug culture and those who use.

The song is powerful to say the least and the message behind really drives the whole project. Look below for what inspired San to write this song and also to stream/download the song itself.

San’s first encounter with drugs:
School had just ended. I was in third grade so instead of going to aftercare, I got to wait in the gym with the other big kids. On the average day, I’d sit in the gym for an hour or so till my mom picked me up, but this time my mom was already there. I knew something was wrong because as soon as I sat down I could see my mother’s eyes were red as if she had been crying.

“San, your dad was arrested today,” She whimpered as we pulled away from school. “ He was arrested for something that I just cant explain right now, but you will find out sooner or later, and when you do find out…” She then looked me straight in my eyes, the same way my father gave me that day on his bed “… When you find out just know that everything he did, he did for you.”

As we drove past our house my mother told me that we were going to visit him and the entire car ride there I felt numb, a feeling I still hold in my heart, a numbness that spreads from the edges of my toes to the crown of my head and throughout my soul. As we arrived at the station we began a process that to this day I still perform: starting with the waiting room then to the metal detectors and then to the holding area. My mother my sister and I walked towards the door with the guard in front and in we went.

Cracked glass smeared with a decades worth of filth and lies separated the two of us…
