Albums | Skrillex – Leaving EP

Posted by on January 3, 2013

For those of you who have been lamenting the lack of new Sonny Moore material in recent months, the wait is now over: we’ve got a brand spankin’ new EP from The Little Guy to blast, compare to his past productions, and generally over analyze (“But why doesn’t this sound more like ‘Reptile?’ Ugh, I hate the direction he’s going in now.”) The only catch? To download it, you have to sign up for The Nest, OWSLA’s recently announced digital subscription service that gives you access to early downloads, VIPs, unreleased material, and much more from Team OWSLA.

The EP itself is short but quite diverse. It opens on its most high energy note with “The Reason,” a hard and catchy four minutes of electro house that make heavy use of those trademark choppy vocals. We also get a funky, midtempo trap-influenced breakdown — since trap is officially the most ubiquitous thing happening in electronic music at the moment. From there, it’s onto “Scary Bolly Dub,” a dub reboot of “Scary Monsters” which will be immediately familiar to anyone who’s caught Skrillex live in the past few months. Finally, the title track, which is restrained, darkly melodic, and downtempo; thanks to garage-influenced breakbeats, it’s illustrative of Skrillex’s range as a producer. Yes, to gain access to this EP you must take on the monthly subscription fee to The Nest, but if you’re a serious fan of OWSLA’s work it will be a small price to pay.

House | Jeremy Olander – Pusher / Put Out

Posted by on December 24, 2012

Pryda Friends Protégé, Jeremy Olander in the giving spirit of the holiday season, just as he did last year, has decided to give out another two track EP for free. Both tracks stay true to Jeremy Olander’s production style of chugging bass lines and progressive ebb and flows, with “Put Out” emphasizes rapidly developing melodies and subtly quivering key play, while “Pusher” gives us one of his more energetic productions that builds and builds with its driving bass line and powerful synths. With recent productions like “Norrsken” and “The Rose Law / Rorschach EP“, Jeremy Olander is finishing out 2012 very strong and with the Frisky Radio showcase below, the future is incredibly bright for 2013 and beyond with 16 unreleased tracks from him in the mix. Tracklist after the jump.

DJ-Set, House | Weekend Mixes 11/15/12

Posted by on November 15, 2012

It is that time of the week again. With rivalry weekend and its impending debauchery coming to many campuses across the nation, here are some mixes to keep the party going from sun up to sun up. We start things off with The Drop and their episode this week that features a guest mix from one of the drunkest DJs on twitter, Maor Levi. Next up we have the Bingo Players’ monthly radio show, Hysteria Radio that features exclusive mashups and their latest single “Out Of My Mind“. Together We Are from Arty has been a great addition to the radio show circuit this year and already in its 20th episode, it continues to showcase lesser known tracks and put together a different and excellent tracklist. Swanky Tunes give their monthly Showland podcast with a guest mix from the Nicky Romero and a whole host of unreleased tracks. The rest of the sets are from Tritonal, Diplo, Steve Angello (short one), Hot Mouth, & Thomas Gold. Tracklists and more sets after the jump.

Dubstep, Preview | The Prototypes – Suffocate (Koven Remix)

Posted by on November 4, 2012

Koven (previously Coven, name change due to a lawsuit), is definitely a favorite of mine, considering I have many favorites, but its hard not to when you listen to a lot of music on a daily basis. Koven is a bass machine. He has countless amazing released originals and remixes, including a large arsenal of unreleased tunes including this awesome upcoming remix of The Prototypes’ “Suffocate.” From the clip, the vocals are used properly, but what really gets to you is the extremely heavy bassline using identical synths to those that made Killsonik famous. Koven has show he can adapt his own style in many different ways. This remix releases November 11th.

Dubstep | Excision – Shambhala 2012 Dubstep Mix

Posted by on November 1, 2012

Excision has set a standard for his past Shambhala mixes, so you should know what you are getting yourself into when downloading this mix. This mix is created for the select few who can handle the heaviest, grimiest, craziest dubstep tracks all combined into one, one hour and half long mix.  Containing some new unreleased bangers from the man himself along with what seems to be like his new go to collaboration team with Downlink and Space Laces. I have been able to go through the mix once so far, and it is mixed to a near perfection. Don’t miss the free download to what could be, and probably is, the best dubstep mix of the year.

Dubstep, Preview | Bassnectar & DC Breaks – Breathless Ft. Mimi Page

Posted by on October 12, 2012

The King, as I have referred to him as before, has released a full preview of one of his upcoming tracks that we received a taste of in his last mixtape. That is one of the things I love about Bassnectar, he will release a mixtape always before the release of an EP/Album. It gets you excited to experience all his new and unreleased work before he releases them in full. This new track actually uses samples from his unreleased track “Halo,” which he collaborated on with DC Breaks. “Halo” will never release, along with many other incredible tracks Bassnectar has worked on, but don’t fret, this new single is on the upcoming EP. There are only 4 days left until the “Freestyle” EP drops on October 16th. It will be amazing.
