Progressive House | Nicky Romero vs Krewella – Legacy (Vicetone Remix)
Posted by Middy on August 24, 2013
With the power of both of their fan bases, Symphonica “Legacy” soared right up to the top of the Beatport charts and stayed their for quite some time. However, the original seemed like left over parts from “Symphonica“, with great vocals from Krewella put on top. It needed remixes badly. In step Vicetone, who need no introduction anymore with their powerful, driving melodies. They apply this to “Legacy”, giving it the originality and stamina it needed.

Events | Five Things We Can’t Wait For At Electric Zoo 2013
Posted by Spice on August 8, 2013
Summer is flying by, which is bittersweet on one hand but totally amazing on the other. Why? Because it means that we’re getting closer and closer to Electric Zoo’s blowout fifth year. If you’re not up on your EZoo life, check out our official recap video from last year and see what you missed. Yeah — it was pretty killer. Fortunately, this year is already shaping up to be bigger and better than ever for many reasons, not least of which are:
1) Two mainstages (count ’em, TWO) and an expanded festival site on Randall’s Island. More on that later.
2) A new 18 and up policy. Sorry, youths (#YOUTHS) of the world — I’m too old for your shenanigans and look forward to mingling with an older and wiser crowd. *Wheezes; testily gestures for you to GET OFF MY LAWN.*
3) A totally killer lineup — which is par for the course by EZoo’s standards. There’s lots to be excited about here, but we’ve come up with five things that we’re especially stoked for. Check ’em out after the jump.
Events, Progressive House | Vicetone – Tremble
Posted by Middy on August 5, 2013
Vicetone caught the attention of the internet almost immediately, and a lot of big name DJs right after, but none as strongly as Nicky Romero. They have done label releases before, such as “Stars”, but none as big as this, as they make their label debut on their new home, Protocol Recordings. The Dutch duo take a page out of label boss, Nicky Romero’s playbook with the emotive, string-led interlude, surrounded by their powerful guitar-like synths that really give the track that Vicetone flavor. Right after E Zoo, they will be touring North America with Nicky Romero on his “Nothing Toulouse” tour, which you can find the dates after the jump. Tickets are on sale here.

House, Mix, Trance | Select Tomorrowland 2013 Sets
Posted by Middy on August 1, 2013
Tomorrowland has come and gone. It is still with all of those who were there and they would probably do anything to go back. Luckily for those who were there and those who weren’t, Tomorrowland caught it all on camera and on radio to help us relive it. Here are a few select sets that help exemplify the madness that went down in Boom. More after the jump.
FYI | The DJ Mag Top 100 Poll Is Live, Thank God
Posted by Spice on July 16, 2013
Has it really only been five minutes nine months since the results of the 2012 DJ Mag Top 100 Poll? Wow. That totally flew by.
The DJ Mag poll is more than just a poll, of course; it’s an increasingly dominant internet sideshow that is about to become a larger part of your life than you’d probably like. How we’ve missed the pageantry of it all — the fervent sense of camaraderie that gets expressed through status updates (see above); the earnest pleas to our finer sensibilities (“a vote for Steve Aoki is a vote for pandas!”); the reliable kvetching from @Deadmau5 (“lol fuk this poll…even though I always crush the top 5 #whatever”); and, of course, the overwhelming sense of inevitability anticipation (spoiler alert: Armin wins in 2013). The only thing better than Shark Week is the DJ Mag Top 100 Poll!
In truth, this year’s poll is already shaping up to be even more unbearable than ever, due to two very distinct forces coming together to create a veritable perfect storm of awfulness:
1) Hashtags over everything. (Case in point: Ferry Corsten is now a hashtag on his own Facebook page.)
2) The EDM Explosion of 2010-Present — or whatever phrase du jour you, your grandmother, and/or The New York Times are using to refer to this awesome/terrible watershed moment in our musical metanarrative.
So if you think you’re in for anything more than a whole lotta this for the next three months…well, LOL, bro. That’s adorable.
Electro-House, Progressive House | Rihanna ft David Guetta – Right Now (Remixes)
Posted by Middy on July 12, 2013
Pop vixen Rihanna has become one of the leaders in bringing dance music into popular music, for better of for worse, collaborating with Calvin Harris, David Guetta numerous times and on “Right Now” bringing on the talents of Nicky Romero for what he called a “basic” production. While the track has had staying value for radio play and commercially, being an anthem for the NBA playoffs, as a club weapon it needed a facelift and that is exactly what it got from a group of Dutchmen in this remix package.
Dyro does not change too much, but rather adds his own gritty formula that blends with the original melody, beefing up the bass line as a possible track for more commercial audiences. Sick Individuals took more liberties with the track, adding a rolling, pitched bass line and big room synths to make this my favorite of the two, though the Dyro remix has received the brunt of the publicity.
Progressive House | Matthew Koma – One Night (Vicetone Remix)
Posted by Middy on May 21, 2013
It has been a crazy year for Vicetone. Ever since exploding onto the scene last July, they have wowed fans, artists and industry insiders alike with their uncannily crisp productions, big time melodies and prolific remix rate that does not sacrifice for quality. One such customer is Nicky Romero who has signed them to his label, Protocol Recordings, and by the looks of it (rather blurry, what are you taking pictures with a flip phone?) may be working on a track with them.
Matthew Koma has become one of the hottest vocalists in dance music, and from that he has launched his own solo career with his “Parachute EP” successfully released last year and an album forthcoming later in the year. Vicetone have continued their dominance into the 2013, though their prolific release rate has slowed up as we have seen more official releases from the Dutch duo like “Heartbeat” with Collin Mcloughlin and “Stars” with Jonny Rose. Building around Matthew Koma’s seemingly perfectly built for edm vocals, Vicetone add their own big room touch with a crisp, rock influenced synth melody that pierces through your speakers and fills the space around you. Look for more remixes and originals from Vicetone coming up, including a remix of Nervo‘s “Hold On“.
