Progressive House | Calvin Harris feat. John Newman – Blame

Posted by on September 5, 2014

I love Calvin Harris. Not in your college-aged sorority chick that listens to nothing but progressive house and goes to Coachella wearing an Indian headdress and flash tattoos way. I actually like him because I think his production is a cut above. Sure Hardwell is the number one DJ, but Harris has achieved cross over status. This new release from Harris though? It’s not getting the job done. The writing is great. The vocals are great. The drop is..uneventful. John Newman is brilliant as always, but Calvin really missed the boat on this one. This had the potential to become a mega-smash solidifying his summer reign. In the grand scheme of things, this review won’t hurt “Blame’s” performance one bit. We don’t intend it to. Regardless, we have to call it like we see it. Calvin Harris’ new “Blame” single out now on Sony (UK) is a dud of a track.

Fresh off his release the other day, Smoko Ono decides to drop a very very nice remix to Vic Mensa’s Wimme Nah. A little more wavy than the OG, it bangs. I’m digging everything this guys putting out so definitely make sure to peep this as well as his other stuff. Enjoy.

Local Natives - Black Balloons (lost kings remix)

Lost kings have been two of my favorite producers as of late. Their remix of “Latch” is amazing and remains one of my favorite songs at the moment. Their follow up to that, a remix of Local Native’s “Black Balloons” is equally as impressive. The rolling melody after the slow, piano filled bridge makes for such a powerful drop. As I’ve said in my previous post for them, these two guys are ones to watch.

Electro-House, FYI | Does Every Vinai Song Sound The Same?

Posted by on August 7, 2014

vinai suckIt is a hypothetical question to get your attention because the answer is yes, and here is why. I saw a side-by-side comparison a while ago and didn’t think too much of it, just an isolated incident of two songs that were made at the same time and released over the span of a few months. Then this Magnetic Mag article popped up in news feed today and I realized that this is much worse than I thought. So I decided to some more digging to try and get the full story and man it is rough. They all have the same kick, the same notes, the same Pryda snare at the exact moments in the drop — its almost like if you lined up the songs they would sound like one song. Oh wait, somebody did that and it is somewhat startling to hear the results.

To be fair, artists spend years developing a “signature” sound and once they find it, they aren’t going to deviate too far from it, especially in the early stages of their professional career. However, in this case, you see a cop and paste mentality, where almost no care goes into creating a new complete idea with each song. Instead it is a lazy reliance on what has worked in the past with no attempt to take risks or try something new. Us calling out Vinai for the pretty blatant lack of creativity probably won’t do much to dent their meteoric rise in the last year, that is up to the fans. It is up to them to decide whether or not they want to continue hearing the same song over and over again and the time when they say enough is enough may come sooner than Vinai would like.

Chill, Trap | Wizard – In The Fire

Posted by on July 30, 2014

Wizard dropped a new chill track for us today called “In The Fire”. The familiar sample is warped and complimented by low, speaker busting bass. The bass-line is what makes this track particularly note-able. Sweeping arpeggiators and hard hitting bass tones bang along side trap beats and quiet vocals throughout each bridge and drop. This track is downright sexy, and I don’t say that often. Grab it for free!

From the dudes who brought you the vocal anthem “I Am” (Yes it was them who made it and then Axwell just touched it up), comes another surefire summer hit. Sick Individuals are about as talented a producing duo as there are out there and “Wasting Moonlight” only helps cement that further. Get ready for this to drop on July 14th.

Max Elto - Shadow Of The Sun (Adventure Club Remix)

The original mix of Max Elto’s “Shadow Of The Sun” is superb and so is the Mako remix. The progressive house route had been exhausted and could not be topped anyway, so having Adventure Club take a go at remixing it was a good idea. Unsurprisingly, they did a great job. A slow piano starts the song off with the help of the fantastically reworked vocals. The drums and synths then come in and eventually build up to the almost dubstep like drop. This is an all around great track and they are giving it away for free.
