Hip-Hop, Mixtapes, Rap | EaSWay – les bourgeois (Mixtape)

Posted by on May 23, 2015

EaSWay’s new project, Les Bourgeois, is a commentary on the mislead priorities and insignificant desires of a lost generation. EaSWay raps about the good, the bad and the tempting throughout this mixtape and he is never too righteous to deem himself above the rest of his generation. The tape is a mix of songs about love, sex, money, and fame and as standard as that might sound, it is delivered in a way that brings new light on the subjects.

Electro, Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | Quinn – Change of Scenery (EP)

Posted by on May 4, 2015

Quinn is no stranger to Fresh New Tracks, after we premiered his lead single “Never Done This“, readers and listeners got a taste of his pop-leaning “FFYL“. Originally from Michigan, only a year ago Quinn was making music from his dorm room that could easily be written off as “college-rap.”

Now, only a few short months later –in that same dorm room– Quinn has matured both sonically and lyrically. For an artist trying to be a darling of taste-maker, cool kid blogs, while simultaneously attempting to capture a mainstream audiences ear, it’s imperative that he or she be brutally self-aware.

“Everybody hit that shmoney ’bout a week ago // yeah I know that’s not my style, but I still play it though,” raps Quinn on Change of Scenery‘s opening track “Native Tongue”.

In a world where artists are immediately boxed off or even disregarded to a specific genre, Quinn is breaking through the mold. Listen below as he sing-raps and grabs attention with ease through his Top-40-ready hooks.

Hip-Hop, Mixtapes, Rap | Jon Waltz – Alyss (EP)

Posted by on October 10, 2014

After numerous praise-worthy singles, the time has finally come for Jon Waltz’s full project. Accompanied by a unique story and visual representation, “Alyss”, proves to be an incredibly cohesive and well thought-out body of work.

In my mind, Waltz is still actively searching to find his voice, as well as his core audience. There are moments on the EP where one can hear obvious Drake influences, or perhaps the out layer of a Skizzy Mars shell that is shedding. That being said, Jon Waltz and “Alyss” speak to a very different group of people than both of the aforementioned artists.

For kids trying to find their place in the world, or young adults that simply like to question why things happen the way they do, “Alyss” is a must listen.

Hip-Hop, Mixtapes, Rap | Ace Cosgrove – UsvsRobots (Mixtape)

Posted by on October 7, 2014

Ace Cosgrove hails from the DMV, and is no newcomer to Fresh New Tracks. His soulful twist on rap saw him relative success leading up to the release of this tape. And now that UsvsRobots is finally available to the world, it’s only a matter of time before things really propel to the next level.

The DMV has been incredibly strong recently, and everyone is awaiting the next artist to pop. Take a listen below and see why it might just be Ace Cosgrove.

Hip-Hop, Mixtapes, Rap | Bobby Capri – Lemonade (Mixtape)

Bobby Capri - Lemonade (Mixtape) (Artwork)

Fueling my addiction for Virginia-based rap music is the new comer Bobby Capri. Although this project wasn’t even supposed to come out, I’m sure glad it did. There is an essence of old-school paired with contemporary rhyming to make for a very enjoyable project.

Virginia’s music scene is bubbling to say the least, so it will be exciting to see where Capri ends up within it all.

Albums, Hip-Hop, Mixtapes | QuESt – Searching Sylvan

Posted by on September 2, 2014

There are mixtapes and there are albums.  Although Searching Sylvan is available as a free download, I hesitate in calling it a mixtape.  It’s too complete, too cohesive, too deep, too polished, & too original to be called anything but an album.  This, my friends, is a comprehensive work of art.  Miami native, QuESt, has supplied the magnifying glass and opened his front door.  Encouraging us not to download the project, but to listen to his story, Q’s genuine appreciation for his fans and his music is a true sign of his character.

You hear it often, but this is honestly one of those records that you have to listen to from start to finish – at least the first few times through.  There are tracks for every occasion, but to fully understand QuESt’s story, as a fan, I ask you press play and don’t next until the conclusion of “May 10, 2012”.  Then you should press play, again.

There are countless quotable’s throughout this project, but the second half of “Automatic” exemplifies to me what this story is all about.  The below is just a bite and even that doesn’t fully grasp the message he’s putting forward.

“Aspirations, responsibilities, caught between them I’m torn
Tug of war with both of my arms
Strategize the cards that I’ve drawn”

There are life lessons, struggles, successes, high highs and low lows, and most importantly an endless hunger heard through and through.  It’s still too early for me to pick favorites but the few that stuck out during my first listen through; “Biscayne Blvd”, “Make It Out Alive” (…YesQuEStCanSing), “Automatic”, “Erase Me”, “Hunger”, “Struggle Rapper”, “Jon Bellions One Way To San Diego (Outro)”, & “May 10, 2012”.  Shit, well that really narrows it down doesn’t it?  Rather than listening to me, head over to SearchingSylvan.com for a track-by-track breakdown by Sylvan himself!  There is no weak link in this 17-song masterpiece.

Production credits belong to the entire VMG roster along with Q’s in house producers, The Marvels, the homie OB, as well as other very talented beat scientists.  First and foremost, 6ix, who is said to be one of QuESt’s biggest fans, is as committed to succeeding with QuESt as anyone else out there.  They continue to grow and together create beautiful music.  We’ve heard what Logic and 6ix can cook up together, now is our chance to hear what 6ix can do with QuESt.  Feed them hot sauce with their Chipotle and hell, you’ve got bangers like “Hunger” and “Automatic” – two of my favorite songs of the year.  Next is Q’s in house producers, The Marvels, who clearly know him as an artist and can craft their work to his liking.  From start to finish, these guys put it on.  Another one that may have caught some of you by surprise is Visionary’s own, Logic.  For the avid listener, we know Logic can produce and can produce well.  He’s working hard at improving this aspect of his game and his work on “Biscayne Blvd” and “No Love In The City” attribute directly to that.  And don’t let me forget OB, a resident VMG contributor.

Without further adieu, I present to you QuESt’s “Searching Sylvan”.  One of the best collections of music you’ll hear this year.
