Ultra Music Festival 2012: Recap, Sets, Pictures and Videos

At about 7:40 p.m. last Friday, I’m standing towards the front of a monumental crush of neon, glitter, and tanned body parts waiting for Afrojack to take the mainstage. A lot has happened even though we’re barely three hours into the weekend: Alvin Risk has bounced back with considerable swag from a temporary speaker malfunction; far too much money has been surrendered to the good people shilling water and vodka red bulls; somehow, against all odds, we’ve managed to run into a smiling and very friendly Skrillex. The sun is beginning to set and I’m looking down at my phone to run through my pictures when the following notification pops up: Liz F. has sent you a request in Draw Something!

As I weigh the merits of listening to Benny Benassi close out an epic set against attempting to render an anatomically correct J.Lo with my right index finger, my thoughts turn to Alan in The Hangover, when Bradley Cooper’s all “put some pants on, man, I find it a little weird I have to ask twice” — “Pants at a time like this?!” Same idea. Draw Something at a time like this? Really? C’man Liz. Get your life together, bro.

Afrojack appears, a pounding beat takes hold, and the crowd begins to thrash in earnest. My phone is instantly forgotten. At that moment, it hits me: I’m in Miami, I’m surrounded by some of my very best friends who are in turn flanked by literally thousands of people, and everyone is just excited as I am to be right here, right now. How on earth can anything ever top this?

I realize that it’s been almost a week, but it’s taken me practically that long to recover/transition back into the depressing grind of The Real World/sort through 1205918505 GB of videos/purge my person of glitter/yeah. It hasn’t been easy, to say the least.

I think I’ll build this recap from the ground up, so without further adieu, let us revist…

The Venue.

Between 150,000 and 200,000 people descended upon Bayfront Park for each day of Ultra, and let me just say: the UMF crew really had their you-know-what together. The line to enter admittedly took ages to get through (except on the third day, when security clearly stopped caring and didn’t check a single bag), but beyond that the festival ran like a top. Food, drink and bathrooms were all readily accessible from each concert tent, ATMs were plentiful, the speakers so powerful as to be borderline painful, and the visual effects at each stage exceptionally high quality – there were even light shows and fantastical images projected onto the surrounding buildings. Bayfront Park is paced wtih grassy hills and quiet spaces off to the side, so taking a breather with friends was a breeze. Thoughtful touches, like the centrally-located phone charging station, abounded. And the unsung hero who thought to install cell towers (!!) by the venue has my eternal gratitude: all of my texts and phone calls went through without a hitch. Practically unheard of at an event the size of Ultra.

My only complaint is that the maze-like layout of the venue made hopping from tent to tent a bit difficult (especially if a big act was coming on anywhere) – we rapidly realized that it made more sense to lock in at one tent instead of bouncing around and fighting the crowds. While this definitely did not detract from the overall experience, it did mean that I wound up missing out on some of the performances that I wanted to see (it makes no sense to claw your way up to the mainstage to catch part of Kaskade when you’re twenty feet away from Ferry Corsten and Armin Van Buuren’s on deck). On the whole, however, Bayfront Park was the perfect location in the perfect city.

But Ultra, of course, is far more than just a location. You’re not paying to go to Miami and sit in an amphitheater near the bay….you’re paying for the whole

UMF Experience.

If you’ve been to a festival before, you more or less know what to expect. You start to hear the bass long before the gates are even within sight. No matter how outlandishly you may think you’re dressed, you won’t be the craziest person in attendance by a long shot. If you’re in a group, it will often become necessary to hold hands and form a chain – lest one of your friends get swallowed up in the mass of spirit hoods and crop tops.

But what set Ultra apart from the other events I’ve attended was the sheer scale on which everything occurred. The Carl Cox/ASOT tent was a massive technological marvel, an undulating array of illuminated hexagons that pulsed with crystal-clear words and images and bathed the crowd in color and light. The mainstage and the Live Stage could erupt into a cloud of glitter and flame at any moment. And as my friend put it, “in the past six hours, we’ve seen Nicky Romero, Tommy Trash, MiM0SA, Alvin Risk, Benny Benassi, Afrojack, Skrillex, Tiesto, and Pretty Lights…and this is only the first day.”

In other words, there was a collective, palpable sense the entire weekend of – whoa. We’re at Ultra. We’re in Miami. This is arguably the biggest festival in America. Sure, there were no carnival rides, or an all-white dress code, and maybe the New York skyline wasn’t visible behind the mainstage, but over the course of three days it became very clear: Ultra is the most serious player in the game.

Part of this has to do with the fact that Ultra occurs in Miami, a city which in my experience seems to do a lot less sleeping than New York. And Miami gets completely and utterly dominated by the madness of EDM during WMC. The streets swell with brightly-colored ravers during the day and scantily clad clubbers eagerly seeking out the best after-parties at night. The streets close but everything else opens. It really is like entering another dimension.

But Ultra is about the music more than it is anything else. I’m finding it extremely difficult to get a purchase on it all in my mind because the weekend was such an awesome, formative, deranged blur. Which is why I’m hesitant to settle on a

Favorite Set.

Everyone has been asking me about this and I’m afraid that I still don’t have a good answer. Knife Party’s thunderous, in-your-face performance on Sunday afternoon was like getting punchdrunk on life-threatening quantities of caffeine – and there’s nothing quite like hearing tens of thousands of people scream in their best British robot voice, “YOU BLOCKED ME ON FACEBOOK…AND NOW YOU’RE GOING TO DIE!” Skrillex performed inside of a spaceship on Friday night and blew the mainstage apart – but he was at his very best during his stripped-down surprise appearance with 12th Planet on Saturday. The few hours I spent trancing out at the other end of the spectrum in the ASOT 550 tent were undeniably some of the most amazing of the weekend (Ferry Corsten was particularly spectacular). Armin and Datsik (wildly different but wildly excellent) both made use of performers in giant LED robot suits who alternately shot sparks into the air or gushes of cooling, mentholated steam into the audience. These few, dazzling minutes in Bassnectar’s mindblowing closing set on Sunday continue to give me chills. And dancing like maniacs while D.C. faves Nadastrom and Alvin Risk threw down moombahton anthems proved even more ridiculous and crazy than I had thought (Toto, I don’t think we’re in U-Hall anymore…)

But my favorite set? Of all? Well, okay. If I have to. Flux Pavilion and Doctor P took the stage in UMF Brazil on Saturday when the crowd was at its most frenzied and primal. The hours we spent in that tent were quite possibly the craziest of the weekend – the prospect of leaving to see someone else didn’t even enter anyone’s mind.
