Albums | Jared Evan x Statik Selektah – Boom Bap & Blues [Album]

boom bap and blues fnt

Although the prominent age of Boom Bap is now overshadowed by electro beats and radio ready production, the subgenre is far from dead.  Statik Selektah is by no means a “Boom Bap” producer, but his versatility sheds light on the masked style.  Jared Evan sings from his soul.  He raps from his soul.  That’s his style.   Collectively, the duo have collaborated on their joint LP, Boom Bap & Blues.  Together they have resonated a combination of genre’s that mainstream music is missing.

There’s no question the features will catch your eye (Joey Bada$$, Action Bronson, Lil Fame, Termanology…), but Jared’s versatility alone is worthy of repeated play.  Props to you Mr. Evan and Mr. Selektah, this is one hell of a project.

Hip-Hop, Pop | Jared Evan – Are We Almost There Yet? (Prod. by Statik Selektah)

Posted by on February 22, 2013

jared evan are we almost there yet freshnewtracks

One of my favorite up and coming hybrid artists, Jared Evan, shares the first cut off his collaborated project with producer Statik Selektah.  At only 23, the NY native has had an adventurous career, initially signing with Interscope, having his music featured in TV spots, to releasing several solo projects and now working on a collaborative effort with one of the game’s most respected producers.  With the title of the upcoming project, Boom Bap & Blues, Statik cooks up a beat driven by a heavy bass line, snare kicks and smooth keys as Jared soulfully sings his first verse before bursting into a secondary rap verse.  Asking the seamlessly daunting question, “Are we almost there yet?”

“Statik play the record so they hear what I say, I’m from New York but I’m headed west no Kanye,
With a back pack if my fans talk then I chat back and I bogart like the rat pack”

Hip-Hop, Pop | Jared Evan – Letters [Music Video]

In a saturated digital age, we sometimes forget the power of pen on papyrus.  In his heartwarming track off his 2012 EP, The 4th Chapter, the NYC native Jared Evan pours his heart onto the paper illustrating his emotions in the form of “Letters”.  Coming clean through his gravitating vocals, the multi talented musician reminds us he is a rapper at heart, dropping the third verse in rap form, reiterating his feelings through his newly scripted letters.

There’s a lot on the horizon for Jared.  I can tell you for certain he has a joint project on the way with Statik Selektah titled “Boom Bap & Blues” along with some collaborative work with Hoodie Allen and likely another original, solo project.

DO SOMETHING

Freestyle, Hip-Hop | Los, Lola Monroe, Joe Budden, Action Bronson

The youngin’ coming after the crown, Los, recently made a visit to Shade 45’s Toca Tuesday to spit some bars off the top.  This is not the first time I’ve seen Los go bananas off the top, as he has made it a staple of his live shows.  If you haven’t copped one of the mixtapes of the year, go download The Crown Ain’t Safe now.

Los’ girlfriend, Lola Monroe, who recently inked a deal with Taylor Gang gives us a freestyle over Drake and Common’s beef song.  I downloaded Lola’s last mixtape after hearing some features on Los’ tracks and wasn’t overly impressed.  Ironically, I think she sounds similar to Nicki at times, but her self proclamation of “the female Pac” is a bit extreme.

After hearing No Church In The Wild in the trailer for Denzyl’s new flick, Safe House, you start to realize just how incredible the production is on the Watch The Throne project.  Joey B goes in over the 88-Keys x Kanye West x Mike Dean beat, owning it as usual.

Action Bronson hit the booth with Statik Selektah, laying down some fresh new bars for his next collaborated project.  Nothing out of the ordinary, just quality byproduct of an overweight white dude rapping.

Hip-Hop, Interviews | Mac Miller, Bun B, Statik Selektah, Tayyib Ali

A little over a year back, Mac Miller made his first appearance on Toca Tuesday.  Just over a year later, Mac returns joining the Shade 45 crew along the likes of the OG, Bun B, and Statik Selektah for a nice lengthy interview focused around respect and the heart of hip-hop.  Bun shows undying respect for the young kid as he prep’s for the release of his debut album, Blue Slide Park.  With 7 mixtapes under his belt, Mac explains the depth and concept behind the album and how it is such a full project.

B.o.B. recently teamed up with Playboy Tre and Meek Mill for what could be the second single off his sophomore album, Strange Clouds, due out in early spring of 2012, or another unreleased track off a presumed mixtape dropping sometime between now and then.  Above are the visuals for the track, “Epic”, which the trio goes hard over the wild Lil C production in the confines of a vacant boxing gym.

Statik Selektah is only days away from dropping his highly anticipated album, Population Control, featuring a slew of stars, both young and old.  “Groupie Love”, the third track off the production album features Mac Miller and Josh Xantus.  Judging by the lineup, this will probably be one of the lighter tracks on the record.  Stay tuned, I’ll keep you posted with more releases as the album drops next Tuesday, the 25th.  Also, below is yet another unreleased cut from Mac.  Sounds like an old one.

Wale laid down a short freestyle over Jay-Z’s classic, “What More Can I Say”, with hopes of keeping people tuned in prior to the release of Ambition.  Wale exercises his wordplay on this one and keeps it fresh as always.   Ambition coming 11.1.11.

The Roots tag label mate, Big K.R.I.T. for a verse on their new single off their upcoming album, undun, scheduled to hit shelves 12.6.11.  As expected, here’s a powerful and soulful track that we’ve grown accustomed to hearing from both parties.

Diggy Diggy Diggy can’t you see!  Young Simmons grabs a hook from Jeremih as the the youngin’ drops what could be the fullest song he’s released to date.  I’m still not completely sold on the kid, but with time, he’s got the resources to be a star.

Hip-Hop, Videos | Tayyib Ali Summer Tour Footage (Video)

Posted by on September 14, 2011

While Tayyib Ali had a busy summer on the road, Jon Kilmer was behind the camera capturing nearly every moment of it.  From New York to Philly, to Massachusetts, to Boulder, Tayyib showed fans just what he’s all about.  I was fortunate to catch up with Tay down in Plymouth, MA where he had the crowd moving like a veteran.  Still only 19, this young Philly gun is poised for success and with new material just around the corner, expect more big things to come from Ali.

In other news, Statik Selektah released the track list for his upcoming album, where Tayyib will make an appearance along with Mac Miller, Bun B, Talib Kweli, Joel Ortiz, Big K.R.I.T., XV, and several other notable artists.

Recent Features from Tayyib:
